- 2 people stole our Catalytic Converter on our 2006 Honda Accord last week. So now, this vehicle won't be in any of the tutorial videos. Nick will try to restore the vehicle back using aftermarket parts, but for now, I won't be using the Accord for tutorial videos.
If you own the Accord and live in California, be very careful where you park. Thieves been stealing Catalytic converters on Accords and Prius. So be careful out there!

Yeah, they got me too. $900.00 later and a Smog referee due to having to use an authorized parts number due to shortage of Catalytic Converters in California. Had to go to the hood and get a deal on a converter from a mom and pops shop, a lot cheaper than a chain store. still went through a lot of sh**t to get this smog check to pass. A lot of time and appointments from shops to smog checks. Aftermarket parts are a lot cheaper but won't pass a smog check in California. Part of a smog test site is to check the Catalytic Converter even if it passes, it still needs to have the correct Catalytic Converter, not an Aftermarket one. I know cause I tried to use it to save some money and failed my smog check. Aftermarket one costs 300.00 installed plus sensor another 100.00 total 400.00 for a quick fix, good until your next smog check.( A Smog referee is a state official who helps you out with replacement Catalytic Converter Authorized part and conducts a smog check for free and places an official sticker to indicate you an authorized replacement converter for the next time you get a smog check in two years.(The Moral of the story is if you have an older Honda Accord -YOU ARE A TARGET FOR THE THEFT OF YOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
Very time consuming, and doesn’t help I only had 1 way insurance. Even if I had 2 way insurance, the vehicle would’ve been totaled since the value of the car is lower than the cost of the repair from the insurance quotes.
Any shield 🛡 recommendations? 06 honda
Man, I'm really sorry. I rely on your videos to keep my 2007 Accord 4-cyl running smoothly! I just put $2300 of work into mine, so hopefully no one around here wants its non-SULEV cat. I work in insurance, and the 03-07 Accord is right up there with the 04-09 Prius as having the highest amount of cat theft. No one makes an aftermarket CARB-compliant cat, and even if the replacement didn't cost as much as the car is worth, the parts are backordered for months. It's an awful situation all around.
💯 that’s why insurance would total the car regardless if it’s 2 way… 😞
Wow, sorry about the converter but I must point out how clean it is under there - that's CA for you! Lol You should see the rust buckets that get totaled here on the east coast....
Exactly. You can tell that car spent its entire life in dry dessert and is covered with only fine sands....
To bad the Jack didn’t shift and drop the car on their skulls! Oh, well….maybe next 🚘 car.
🤣🤣
Hope you can keep it on the road. I’ve got one of these and they’re great cars. 😟
it's a shame that crooks do this - but even a bigger shame that California and the EPA makes replacement cats so hard to come by now and so expensive that you have to almost total the car over a cat! Sorry this happened to you and hope you get it fixed! Nice to see new videos!
Gov. needs to address this issue. Without regulation of scrapper practice, this can be disastrous for the whole society.
Newsflash... the government believes and acts like we are here to serve them...the taxes are worse than a mafia pinch... The government hates their tax slaves and doesn't give 2 fucks about any of us.
Also it convenient for them for this to happen to us because regular catalytic converters cost like 250 to maybe 500, but since the government believes we are the problem California needs a special ass one that cost like 2k. They want their cut from the 2k
@@JPD__ CA cities are too crowded and the polution level is high. It is not FL with large forest area.
@@Dr.AnthonyFraudcheat3499 one of the main problem in USA, we do not pay enough tax especielly for the rich. This causing some of us have insufficient income, education, healthcare, etc. Countries which high tax for the rich like Germany, Findland, Norway, Japan, etc. never have this issue and criminality is very low. We still fund school from local property tax. Rich areas get better school, public school that is free for everyone. Not really free if we think how different they are in different districts
Gov itself is a thief if you live in California.
I am sorry my friend. My 2005 accord’s Cat was stolen last week. Unfortunately, I have to total the car as well.
What do you mean? It is not driveable?
It’s a matter of the auto insurance covering the cost to replace the catalytic converter. Usually the cost is more the than value of the vehicle so they just pay you out of the car’s current value and total the car. Ex. Car’s value is $2800, cost to replace cat is 80% of car’s value or more.
@@Aztek81 exactly, even with insurance, the car is totaled.
@@Aztek81 Check out New York I heard from a guy whose Cat was stolen that there's a place in the Bronx that will sell him a replacement for $250.00.
Take the useless mask off dude.
No, we like our mask 😷 we want to be bane
Sorry to hear those dame thieves stole the converter. My wife 2007 got stolen twice. The original one and then the replacement one. I got it fix for 1k. Shop wanted $3800 to fix it. I got aftermarket Walker California converter.
Straight pipe the car for the mean time, quiets it down. Also install a shield on the Prius! They sell shields so it makes it tough to get to it
Where I get one?
They’ll be in for a surprise when they try to steal the cat from mine and it’s just a straight pipe 😎😎
@Harry yeah lol shops are real sketchy about doing it. I did it myself it got me by long enough to get a 49 state cat in AZ installed
Fyi, same thing happened to my 07 Accord but I was able to replace my cat with a CARB compliant aftermarket cat “luckily” because my Accord was not a SULEV /PZEV emissions Accord. Accords which have the SULEV label on top of the engine cover REQUIRE Honda Genuine parts only which means $$$! The cost of my repair was $1400; 07 Accord with 230k miles, my insurance covered it. Sad our Accords are targets.
My 06 Honda is SULEV they got me last week. I’m not hearing anything anywhere from anyone about using just OEM parts for it. Especially when Honda is back ordered for about 12-16 months. Everyone is telling me that I can use an OEM o2 sensor with an aftermarket catalytic converter and it will pass smog just fine. I just have to change the aftermarket catalytic converter into an OEM converter after it’s life span is over. Have you heard anything like this?
@Carlos R Castro Jr.Which catalytic converter did you fit? Thanks
@@7even.6ix.zer09 I never heard of that. California emissions require oem parts for your pzev Accord to pass emissions to keep it “legal”. Take my info with a grain of salt, things may have changed due to the supply chain.
Seems like you need to rig cars now so that the thieves will be terminated.
Hi, I'm from Poland
A few months ago in my 2007 Accord EU also a catalytic converter was stolen
On Honda service cost approx $3000
Cost of my repair $900, luckily paid with insurance
Very nice
@tomasz. Which catalytic converter did you fit? Thanks
Just seeing this video after happening to mine. I hate crooks
Yeah, common occurrence with these models…
Why are you wearing a mask outdoors? 🤦♂️
We like to be cool 😷
My 2003 accord got stolen too. Insurance totaled it because the catalytic converters cost $3000
Yep, that’s what insurance would do.
Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago down here in Texas. I got a flat on the highway and had to leave it there overnight. Came back the next morning and the cats where gone.. don’t know what to do and how to fix it, too expensive. Any tips? It’s actually underivable with how loud it is
Insurance would consider it totaled, I’d take the money and total it
Straight pipe it with a resonator in the middle
Just had mine stolen… I got an 06” coupe… getting it installed Tuesday.. adding a shield and hoping that will keep theft away 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Any particular reasons why Accords and Prius are popular targets for catalytic converter thefts? Do their catalytic converters have more precious metals or something? A mid 2000 Honda Accord on my block in San Francisco just had its catalytic converter stolen. Don't know why thieves picked that one car out of a block filled with cars.
Because older vehicles are easier to steal and yes, it’s for their precious metals to be recycled because the metal prices went up. 😑
Is that a PZEV sticker on your rear passenger window? NutzAboutBolts
Yep…
That’s the money maker for them scumbags…but they go after all 7th gen Accords. I’ll tip a little Mobil 1 5w-20 to your Accord’s memory, 🙏😆
@@Aztek81 🤣😂🤣 now I just gotta watch out for my Prius
We just picked up a 2007 Accord 4cyl with SULEV, originally from CA under 35k miles. You're right that many of these high mileage Accords are getting scrapped in CA. The low mileage ones are being auctioned and shipped out of state. We have no emissions here and don't go by CA standards, so we put an aftermarket one on designed for SULEVs not registered in CA. All is good. We don't have to deal with CA BS.
Yeah CA cat is expensive, if you have no use for the CA cat, you can sell it for a good amount. If it wasn’t for the CA cat regulation, I would just buy any aftermarket cat and put it on my accord and keep it.
Mine was stolen last night from my 2006 Accord. They cut it exactly the same way. They cut the front down pipe on the turn so I cant repair it. Also cut off the rear flange like yours too. Ripped out the rear o2 sensor as well. It's a $3000 EPA federal fine to run it without a Cat. I was thinking of driving my CA accord across the border and selling it in Arizona.
Ouch… sorry about that. Did your insurance total your car? I assume since it cost more than half to repair, they would pay you out to total the vehicle.
@@NutzAboutBolts Unfortunately was paying for liability insurance only. It stings a little.
@@shuttrbg22 ah, I know how that feels, I end up selling it to nick and take the lost since it was 1 way insurance 😞
Sigh! The police should pay more attention to those shameless thieves & the courts should also not let them out so easily.
People are disgusting! I'm so sorry for you and your family. I know sorry doesn't help much but the scrap and junk yards need to stop taking anything that has to do with catalytic converters. Especially if they're chopped up. It angers me beyond belief.
Thank you. There’s actually a catalytic stealing ring where they steal them and ship them over seas to sell as scraps because of the minerals In the cat itself
Sheep all over the place and it shows !
Baaaaaa… whoops that was a goat, meeeeeeeh!
You must have a least steel shield very hard to cut it’s cheaper than the stainless steel. not aluminum shield bc its easy to cut with pliers!
I’ve read some people has the shield on the Prius and they still found a way to cut around it 🤷🏻♂️
I was asking about the Honda Accord guy in a previous video of a friend of yours doing an oil change on a Cadillac it's nice to see you again sorry to hear that hope everything goes well with your car I have the same car in coupe it's almost at 200,000 miles I got it with 100000 miles I'd like it to get to 300,000 if I'm lucky wish you the best
Thanks. Good luck to you too
@nutzaboutbolts is there an adapter to connect under the engine where the down pipe would be so I can run flex pipe all the way to the muffler? They stole my catalytic converter too along with down pipe. 😔
Not that I know of… I’d suggest replacing it with oem parts
Had a cat stolen from my 2003 Accord. I live in NY, car is registered in PA as rural. They went from the flex pipe, past the resonator, and stopped about where the rear door has the dog leg. Thankfully, rural PA doesn't do emissions. Got an aftermarket cat (hooray for registration in rural Pa), a muffler, new less restrictive exhaust pipe, and pretty much wound up with an insurance approved and paid for cat back for my trouble.
Got lucky once. Hopefully it's never again.
That’s great! too bad CA needs to have a certified CA cat to pass smog. The cat itself is expensive.
@@NutzAboutBolts if the car was registered in New York, it would have cost me about $1,700. Sulev Emissions vehicle version, it would have been over $2,500. But because the car is registered in Pennsylvania, you could literally just put on any old cat that fits and then straight pipe at the rest of the way and it would be considered perfectly legal. They pretty much did that, but put in a small resonator and a few bends to line it up in the right spot. But it makes a much different and slightly raspier noise. Now. I wound up with an insurance company approved cat-back for all the intents and purposes
@@ganzonomy nicely done.
this is so upsetting that it happened to you. We could have a gofund me and we could at least chip in to get you a new one. Your Honda Accord video tutorials are amazing and has saved us thousands in repairs bc of your tutorials. So I guess you no longer have the car? Just now seeing this video
Yes, the Honda accord has been sold off to a new owner. Sorry, no more videos of this car 😞
Yes for some strange reason catalytic converters are being stolen left and right where I live as well dumb from what I hear they contain black gold that that is expensive
It’s platinum in the cat that’s so valuable.
A little late to this, but damn this sucks. I've relied on your videos to work on my 04 Accord was just coming here to see if you had ever had to recharge your AC (since I think I need to do that on mine!
2006 Honda can be fooled with empty exhaust pipe. Just put longer tube on the downstream O2 sensor. It still runs in some states that do not require inspection like FL. It is so pity for sich reliable running car.
INSTALL A WEBAM, OR LOUD A-A--OO-GAH ALARM ON THE VEHICLE THAT SENSES MOVEMENT. CONSIDER ELECTRIFYING THE VEHICLE WITH 120 VOLTS AC.
Damn thats horrible! Any update?
Nope, it’s gone.
🤬
It just sucks what’s happening in the USA. From a rule of the law country to this!
Damn 😢
So they stole your cat and some exhaust pipe and you are going to junk the car? Why "RIP 2006 Honda Accord?"
Did your Accord have SULEV or PZEV emissions label?
Had 1 way insurance, it’s a California car. Parts alone costed 4-5k so I’d rather junk it. Nick bought it from me so he’ll try to restore it with aftermarket parts. So we’ll see.
Thanks for your Accord tutorials. You saved me hundreds! RIP to your Accord 😔
@@NutzAboutBolts You definitely ought to do a video about his restore with aftermarket parts.
@@watershed44 we’ll try to, once he gets all the parts and have it running. We’ll see how it’ll go since he has a bunch of other projects to finish lol
This is what happens when you buy a very common car...
Dang, I’m sorry. I hate thieves!!!!
"Nick will try to restore the vehicle back using aftermarket parts." - which aftermarket Cat did he use?
Walker from rockauto for 450$
Wow, bummer dude ☹️ Hopefully good things coming your way 10 fold👍🏼☹️
Thanks! I hope so too...
Could you do a vid on the cruise control repair?
So my honest question is you can't even drive it or it's technically illegal to drive?
Illegal to drive without the cat. It’s loud lol
I'll buy it from you!
Am I safe to say that my 08 Accord 2.4L is safe?
Nope… better have 2 way insurance
dayumm 😖😖😖
Can I buy the car
Nick already bought my car, he’s restoring it
hi, do you know what's the market price for a converter stolen accord now? let's say 2006 with 150k miles on it? many thanks :)
My 03s cat went bad, I bought a “48” state legal cat, shipped it to Texas, and a friends friend brought it over. 80 bucks for the cat
