I was thinking the same thing. Is there another owner of ANYTHING you can think of, that would be man enough to stay there and let a guy as tough as Bret Hart, have a free shot? I dont think so.
Vince McMahon is a devisive personality. Some hate him, some like him, but I dont think anyone can honestly say that the guy doesnt face things like a man. He did it here, when the ring boy scandal hit, he didnt send some underling on Donahue or Larry King to face the heat. HE showed up to answer the tough questions. He did the same thing when the XFL embarrassingly flopped, and while I think Owen Hart's death was really sad and unnecessary, he was there to answer questions about that after it happened.
I admire the man. Hes worked as hard as anyone with a job in this country, and he doesnt just write checks, hes in it everyday and in every performance that the WWE has.

If Vince hadn’t sided with HBK there would not have been an attitude era in the form we got it. No curtain call, Austin wouldn’t have won king of the ring, Tyson worked better with Austin v HBK than Bret would have. Plus we got this VKM . Not of that would have occurred without Montreal.
Bret didn’t want to lose in Canada , it wasn’t just about Michaels . Michaels got the title, we got heel Vince, Bret got $9 million. Everyone should have come out of this well , WCW couldn’t capitalise on it. EDIT
People don’t like my timeline evidently, Vince sided with HBK long before Montreal , and long after he still paid him. The curtain call isn’t meant to relate directly to Montreal. He refused to send back the IC title before mania 10 and went and made himself a superstar there , Vince saw something in him .

BS that Brets body was breaking down. Yes he had knee surgery in 1997 but still appeared in storyline and had great matches before and after the knee surgery. Prior to that he was an iron man missing just 2 shows in 14 years. Now what is true is that Bret didn't like the direction the company was taking in the attitude era with all the sexuality, foul language, and vulgarity. The biggest issue came down to money I believe. Vince couldn't afford or didn't want to honor the long contract they had signed.
Also, Bret deserves more credit for being a Canadian Hero than Vince wants to give him. If it was that easy Vince could create heros from any country he would please.
Finally, Vince didn't leave like a coward that night on Montreal because he knew if he did after screwing Bret Hart it would have caused a locker room mutiny. Everyone from Undertaker, to Stone Cold, to Mankind, to Shamrock, etc highly admired and respected Bret. The WWF would have been left a shadow of its self with only DX and some lower and mid card guys left. Taking that punch from Bret saved Vince and his company. And to his credit, he launched the Mr. McMahon character thanks to the screwjob and he was lucky Stone Cold was so hot and was the perfect feud for Mr McMahon

The reasons why his final two years were not more noteworthy was one, because WCW sucked and couldn't figure out how to use him, and two, Owen tragically dying led to Bret taking a break from the ring, which you can't blame him. The reason his career ended was the concusion(s) in the Goldberg Match, and making it worse by wrestling several more times after that instead of taking time off to heal.
