There's a lot of besmirching the Noble Slug in this video. Slugs help break down dead plant matter into useful nutrients that plants need. As we all know, the only thing Architects bring to the party is the assurance that you're at least better than an Architect.
Solar panels and batteries increase capacity/charge rate of energy based weapons (yellow bars on the rings) which for some bizarro reason the flamethrower is one of, the various lasers and such in the game also use it as ammo.

"Over engineering" is an oxymoron. One can never have too much engineering, only rubbish end users who don't understand the majesty of your mighty design.
The battery is like ammo crates for lasers and other electronic weapons so they didn’t do anything with them guns you have. I hope you play this more I love this game! Make sure to buy parts for your ship between games so you can start with weapons equipped already

Pretty sure that the point of engineers are to solve problems (that some may not have asked for) so how can someone over-engineer a solution (that sometimes never have been asked to get solved in the first place)?
overengineering is solving a solution in an overly complex and often less efficient way, Mechas are a good exemple of that, they look cool and can go essentially anywhere on land, but are so much more complicated, expensive and prawn to failure than tank treads, which are just has efficient for crossing different terrains and have less limitation has to how much weapon (and overall mass) you can mount on the damn thing.

Many games consider flame throwers to be 'energy weapons'...depends on if they use actual chemical fuel, solid fuel or if it's plasma-based I guess.

They do if you have the mining drone. The mining drone will turn those asteroids into ammo and double your the crystals you get from blue asteroids.

Over-engineering basically solves the problem with more foresight.
