Absolutely PHENOMENAL storytelling by Martin there. I've NEVER in my 39 years of life shed a tear for a character I was ultimately completely uninvested in. That changed Sunday night. Every reaction, every time I tear up. HODOR knew what was going to wind up happening to him, he knew Bran was responsible for it, and he did nothing to try and change it because he KNEW what was at stake. He stayed the course. Hodor is a fucking superhero hands down. Also after that episode if there was any doubt as to the declaration I think Martin is one of the definitive great storytellers of our lifetime. Up there with Tolkien, Rowling, and other amazing story, and fandom creators. That scene took my breath away which is not an easy thing to do.
+thegame346 amen! It struck me after reading your comment that Hodor knew all along what was coming and like you said, still stayed the course. I loved him as a character who was innocent and loyal to the Starks, and not once realised how his entire life has been one huge sacrifice. He's the greatest superhero ever indeed.
+thegame346 I think that was the other thing that made the scene powerful is realizing what Bran had to do to get away from the ice zombies. I felt sorry for Bran too.
Hodor's involvement in holding the door is questionable though. Bran warged him and at no moment was it portrayed that he stopped it and let Hodor act on his own. In other words, it could have been Bran in Hodor's mind holding the door which would mean Bran killed him.
Xenon Doro If that is the case HODOR still knew the day was coming. He still could have ran, he could have just killed Bran, or any number of things to ensure his life stayed intact. Like I said he knew the stakes involved and felt they were far too important to let the world down. He is in no short order any different than one of the Nights Watch that takes the oath knowing they will probably die.
That guy with the sunglasses had the right idea, "Imma wear these sunglasses in this here bar so no-one can see me cry like a newborn babe". I really want to visit your bar one day Sean.

@@kennethlee2278 I knew it was going to happen, but I was still shocked when they stabbed a pregnant lady in the belly. If you tell me that didn't shock you, then I call you a liar sir
AeneasGemini no, I wasn’t shocked. The writers had already set a new standard for shocking by that point. A pregnant woman getting stabbed was nothing. Shocking would have been someone cutting the baby out and then stabbing it.
@@kennethlee2278 I really disagree, if you weren't shocked then I would say you're in very small company for that. A pregnant woman getting stabbed in the belly well beyond what they'd done before that point. Bran getting thrown out of the window was morally disturbing but in visual terms they didn't portray that in a particularly shocking way. Of course they kept it going later (Oberyn Martell's death for instance), but in terms of shock value I think only Shireen being burned alive was as bad as Rob Stark's wife
dear god if that was not well hidden foreshadowing I don't know what is. rest in peace Hodor. you deserved it after a life of waiting to hold the door.
It makes it more poignant when watching past episodes. For example when Bran wargs into Hodor and uses him to kill and Hodor is looking at his bloody hands afterwards you realize that Hodors' mind is stuck at that young age and it is why he is such a sweet innocent gentle giant. Also Hodors' past freakouts are understandable now.
When he freaked out in season 2 I think in that tower when the storm started.......he most likely thought his death was about to come and thats why he freaked out.......GRR is a genius
Well you could say the same for Bran too. No such thing as free will in GOT world. Everything seems to happen for a reason. Curse the old and new gods lol.
For me it was more like "Hold the door!" - Oh. My. God. Are they seriously going to do this?! Hold the door? Hodor? That's how this happened? Fuck! That's so sad. Brilliant! But sad.
The fact that an innocent "simpleton" was communicating his destiny, his one purpose to be alive, to everyone all along was so powerful. Wow. Top 5 got moments for me thus far.
Preparing for years to hold the door. Responded everytime with "hold the door" no matter what people asked him, or what else he was doing. He knew the responsibility ahead of him. I think he knew, he stood and held dispite the attacks, and the normal self preservation that would tell him to move.
-Never cried watching a movie(may get a bit emotional once in a while) -Breathed heavily for the first time watching something when I saw Ned Stark, Rob/Catlyn and Oberyn.(didnt cry) -Have cried for the third time watching the Hodor scene this weak. lol
Looks like Dude in the Hawaiian shirt was having "allergy" issues (which is the excuse I would have used for crying in the middle of a bar over a tv show). crazy how people can relate so strongly to a scene like that. Testament to the creator's skills.
I still cry every time I watch this scene. It's been a couple years, but that moment when it finally clicks what "Hodor" meant to the show is devastating every single time.
The great thing about this scene is that flicking between the present day and the past like that, shows what past Hodor is seeing happen to himself. When the viewer stops seeing present day Hodor, so does past Hodor.
I'm watching Game of Thrones now for the first time and just saw this scene last night and was devastated. Had to leave the room so my girl wouldn't see me get choked up. If this doesn't hit you emotionally I'm afraid you don't have a soul. Mad love Hodor. You can let go of the door now and rest big guy😥✊️.
Just watched it recently also , it Also made me so mad when I realized hodor wasn’t basically disabled because Brian kept going back to that point or stayed to long ie. Reckless as he was warned against by the old man
At the time I remember being upset for days - and I wasn’t the only one. Everyone felt like that. I just watched this video and I still bawled my eyes out again - despite it being six years since my first viewing. It’s brilliant storytelling. It’s a tragic story of someone who was pure goodness. It’s impossible not to be moved by that.

This is hands down the best scene ever made for TV. It's the complete package of absolutely heartbreaking, heartwarming and shocking rolled in one, with an incredible payoff that was built up over 6 seasons that nobody saw coming. Genius.
This is one of the most, scratch that, this is _the_ most elegant narrative twist in any TV show I've ever seen. It's like a mobius strip, so perfect. And it manages to bundle up all the melancholia of a life unlived, all the pain of decades trapped in a mind preparing for one future sacrifice, in about sixty seconds. So, so beautifully done.
+Jeremy King i have some issue with that scene, that's not how wolfs fight, but i think he's kinda a pet and also trying to protect Bran so he sacrifice himself i guess
After the entire series and watching through the again in marathon mode (and liking the entire arc), this scene is by head and shoulders the most compelling of any scene in the entire show. Many other great ones, but Hodor's lifelong meditation on this purpose is just a punch in the heart. Good stuff.
Same, I remember being in literal shock when the credits rolled. Like, I was not in my body but watching my body third person. I went and sat on the porch with my dog for a good hour just thinking. It is an amazing scene of course, one of the best out of the whole series. But the fact that a TV show sent me into an existential crisis was far more compelling. How did that just happen...? Even years later it still has the same effect. It is really unfortunate they ran out of source material and couldnt find decent writers who also knew the source material enough to conclude the show. But we gotta rejoice for the first 6 seasons. Really was the best show on TV.
Never cried so much before in my life. Was trying to hide it from my wife when the credits were rolling. She spoke to me and the damn just burst. Absolutely elite storytelling.
+Joe Kerr Who was laughing? Everyone loved him. Kristian gets a win-win, he had a job for 6 years on the biggest tv show out there saying one line, now he gets an epic, relevant sendoff. Dude is fine.
+Raz 1138 laughing at the humor of his character. Hodor was kind of like a joke. And now when I rewatch the seasons and I hear Hodor, it will just be a reminder of his death
There will never be anything like this show again. Watching weekly and big time invested.Great joy and great heartbreak week after week. Just awesome and epic.
i'll admit that this scene was most powerful in entire series in my opinion. The origin of Hodor name. damn... kicked my feelings. btw at 2:42 have you noticed that guy put on sunglases? for covering his tears and red eyes lmfao, there is no sun at all, and its evening.
Hodor's death (and subsequently the revelation of his namesake) was probably the only time I actually wept while watching this show. Such a powerful and upsetting scene.
@@theforevermachine That has the be the biggest load of shite I've read in a long time. GRRM was still involved in the series, and the writers WOULD go to him for advice. Look it up, before you comment on stuff you don't understand. They rushed the final seasons so they can purse other things. What should have happened, if that they should have written what they could, then HBO then bring in other writers to finish it off. They have still created one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and literaly no one was bashing them several years ago, but of course, they do one thing wrong and idiots like you decide that they are suddenly bad at their job? Lol.
its still awesome, even more than awesome. you people want butterflies and stars to every character, your heart is a weak shit of a piece. the show was not made for you guys so shove up your opinions into your ass morons.
the writing is good because this twist came from GRRM. not d&d - they lack the talent to make a long sustained mystery, theyd blow it in 3 episodes or less because they're hacks. GRRM is a master.
The bulk of the bar couldn’t even clap.. everyone was processing the emotional trauma they just endured. Even Captain America/Christian Gray had to rock himself to keep his composure.
Just made a connection in this episode. Hodor is a lovable guy that is so innocent. Jaqen H'gar "Does death only come for the wicked and leave the decent behind?"
If it is true that the showrunners put every single bit of information in because it will get important then I wonder... Briennes deeds or supposed deeds have twice been referred to with the phrase "I´d knight the man who did this". So will they basically "knight" Brienne and does it mean she will survive? :)
This show will go down in fucking history as one of the greatest to ever be created. Martin is a fucking genius. This, The Wire, The Sopranos, Star Trek, Breaking Bad, and the rest. God damn is it amazing.
+John Doe i'm sorry....alot of those donät deserve to be there...you might aswell add gossip girl and sex in the city aswell then. Game of thrones is better than all of them, there is no show even created as good as game of thrones. Only shows who can come even somewhat close are some anime shows.
This was by far the hardest scene to watch in the entire show. I’ve watched this video 3 times now, and held my breath every single time like it was the first time... phenomenal writing.
I was like how good is business around this time when everybody is just glued to the TV? Then when it's all over and everybody's sad I hear "I need a shot". I'm like "ooh ok I get it."
So, "hold the door" contracted stands for "Hodor". Just imagine the nightmare for all the translators all around the world who will have to find something which matches in their own language so it will become "Hodor" in the end. Because, shit, his name is "Hodor" for six seasons now, you can't change it ! It has to be "Hodor" in the end ! How will they do in spanish or in chinese ! The translators must have been nuts when they saw that moment ^^
i'm portuguese, and although i saw the series online without subtitles, here's what's usually done. they translate what's being said, and underneath those subtitles they use parentheses with the original language
In french language the translation is "pas au-dehors", which means exactly "not in the outside", and sounds not so far away from a distorted/deformed Hodor
I never thought I would cry so hard for Hodor, personally he was never really an important character for me in the series but this scene, it made me feel bad for him, to see how he became Hodor and the sacrifice? What if he saw himself die in the future while he was saying hold the door? Omg this scene was executed so well, the sacrifice, young Willis all of it.
+Ella Kit Yeah, it's amazing that a lovable, but otherwise minor character...could go from "the giant who only says his name" to the most tragic character in the GoT universe to date. As soon as Meera said "Hold the Door" it hit me like a ton of bricks what the episode title and his name meant, and it was a twist I didn't see coming at all. Brilliantly executed by the show, and mad genius by GRRM.
Mike Garcia couldn't agree more, I know how significant each title means and I was very curious to know what the door meant, I read some theories before hand but this was so unexpected and tragic, Hodor was definetely underestimated and not appreciated as much as other beloved characters but now the GoT world is never going to forget Hodor.
Thats exactly what it means. When bran wargs into hodor he can still see whats going on he just has no control, like when bran warged into hodor to kill Locke. When he was holding the door future and past hodor were connected thru bran warging. Meaning since that moment as a child when he had that seizure he knew how he was going to die in the future but was unable to say anything other than Hodor because bran damaged his brain in the process. Omg so many manly feels from this
I knew there was the high likelihood for every character to die. But from everyone, I did not expect Holdor's death to get to me so much. I was just watching this episode and crying my eyes out
Such a heavy ending. This season has been nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster from sheer joy seeing Jon's revival to the insanely bittersweet moment when Jon and Sansa reunited, the shock when Ramsay massacred his family and now the death of Hodor, I'm loss for words right now but he died a hero, that's for sure.
Yea man, that is why I love Thrones. I just remembered a moment which I enjoyed a lot, the HELL YEA moment when Brienne and Podrick wrecked the Ramsay soldiers. :)
guy in white has gone emotionally downhill since he started this, now he is rubbing his hands, while rocking back and forth. this aint gonna end well for him....welcome to the show bruh.
I love watching everyone break down one at a time as they catch on to 'hold the door'. For all it's faults and trips at the end, THIS is when GoT was at it's best.

Not all heroes hold swords. Some just hold the door...
That guy with the sunglasses had the right idea, "Imma wear these sunglasses in this here bar so no-one can see me cry like a newborn babe".
I really want to visit your bar one day Sean.
I know what you mean. I live like 3 hours away, might make this trip on this final season
Holy shit! I just found out this bar is in Chicago. I was living in a country far far away when I started following this channel. I moved in to Chicago this year. Definitely gonna visit this bar at a GOT night!
Shocking GoT moments:
#1: "Hodor" Reveal
#2: The Red Wedding
#3: The Final Season
I would put Shireen's death at no.2, it's no Hodor moment but it beats the red wedding for shock value
Red wedding wasn’t shocking, we already knew it was gonna happen.
“Does death only come for the wicked and leave the decent behind?”
😭😭😭
dear god if that was not well hidden foreshadowing I don't know what is. rest in peace Hodor. you deserved it after a life of waiting to hold the door.
+HotelMikeBravo That moment when in this show death DOES only come for the decent and leaves the wicked behind.
+Nimesh Singh mind blown!
+Arif Chasan Did you also notice Arya was playing herself while she was watching the play?
that music kills me everytime..
music is also one of the reason to bring tears. We have to give credits to music of this show..
Yes! It's just awesome music!
I agree, The Stark's Song is powerful.
Love the music
Absolutely...
Ramin Djawadi. God among composers.
Boondock omg! You’re sooo right!!!
@@AKABoondock19 Oh it might actually be darker in the books, Bran or Bloodraven might have done it on purpose
Well you could say the same for Bran too. No such thing as free will in GOT world. Everything seems to happen for a reason. Curse the old and new gods lol.
Everyone’s faces gradually changing:

LOL
Except for one! There's a long-haired blonde gal sitting in the back who keeps smiling all the time ;)
Really he deserved more .😭
Great work
The fact that an innocent "simpleton" was communicating his destiny, his one purpose to be alive, to everyone all along was so powerful. Wow. Top 5 got moments for me thus far.

k. imma write that down real quick brb

It's April 5, 2020. Despite GOT's disappointing ending. I'm still here crying in this masterpiece episode. :'(
It's arguable the emotional high/low point - later drama was weightier, but just so damn rushed / plot holed / plot armoured.
November 2021. I'm still gushing tears
June 19, 2022 and I'm crying like a fool.
September 2022, completely bawling, again.
November 2022, one of the very few moments where I cried in the entirety of got and all the other shows/movies I have ever seen.
The great thing about this scene is that flicking between the present day and the past like that, shows what past Hodor is seeing happen to himself. When the viewer stops seeing present day Hodor, so does past Hodor.
I'm glad I watch this show alone, no one, no camera, so that I can cry properly.
I will upload the other scenes later this week. Don't fret. Hodor.

It was 2022 when you posted this and you leave rooms so women don't see you have emotions?
Oof.
"I NEED A SHOT"
Man. All those who laughed at Hodor for simply able to say Hodor for the laughs, must've been hit the hardest by this. Rewatching reations while waiting for s8ep4
And what are your feelings after season 8?
@@ruster2230 the fact that you didn't get an answer says everything
Here in one scene we see the death and birth of Hodor. Only in Game of Thrones ladies and gentlemen. Only in Game of thrones.
Imagine walking around for almost two decades with this plot point in your head. So grateful to live in the same time period as one of the best Fantasy authors of all time.
It's like re reading book 1 and realizing that martin had 300 years of history figured out even before writing the fucking prologue... What a genius writer seriously

+redmangoose182 actually door is in my language dvere...so I am full of hopes :D
Oh shit lol that's a good point. I guess if his name had been different in each version according to however you say "hold the door" it would've given it away.

This scene could make Ramsey cry
Summer is dead and Winter has arrived.
NOOOO
+Jeremy King Clever.

+Jeremy King
:(
+Jeremy King i have some issue with that scene, that's not how wolfs fight, but i think he's kinda a pet and also trying to protect Bran so he sacrifice himself i guess
Agree.
Hodo..... I can't do it man... I can't do it. I feel dead inside. I was legit balling, my eyes were a waterfall man.

They played the Winterfell theme for him :(
+Jordan Costanza Was it?
+Bruno da Bandeira yes, a slow variation of it. it was very sweet, he was a part of the winterfell-family ;__;
+Jordan Costanza More importantly it's the Stark theme!! Hodor was so badass in his last act the show gave him the honor of going out as a Stark.
thanks :)
That theme is so fucking emotional in an of itself, but coupled with that scene, it was too much to handle
Never cried so much before in my life. Was trying to hide it from my wife when the credits were rolling. She spoke to me and the damn just burst. Absolutely elite storytelling.
2:42 putting the shades on to hide the tears
He held the door, but this man couldn't hold back the tears.
This scene was a fucking vindication for the guy who played Hodor...being mocked and laughed at for 6 seasons and he ends so epic...

Raz 1138 Everyone loved him but no one took him seriously, everyone looked at that character as some sort of comedic relief.
+Joe Kerr now we now Martin knows no comedy
Honestly the purity of Hodor made his death so much more painful and his young self also added...
1:40 the well-known "Yup, I'm now traumatized"-back-and-forth rocking motion.
Yeah, he _tries_ to hide it by rubbing his hands together instead of hugging himself, but we still know a man who's rocking himself when we see one.

Back when the writing was still awesome.
They completely left the books after season 6 and it was all downhill from there
The writing still is, it was just rushed. They tried to get it out of the way, to focus on other things.
Hodor and severus snape will remain most tragic heartbreaking revelations in history of cinema for me.
2 times I have cried while watching cinema.
Just made a connection in this episode. Hodor is a lovable guy that is so innocent. Jaqen H'gar "Does death only come for the wicked and leave the decent behind?"
Also, Jon, to Edd: "Don't knock it down while I'm away."
The wall is coming down this season, folks. CONFIRMED.
Also, the Red Priestess said "we are all exactly where we need to be". Hodor had a destiny.
If it is true that the showrunners put every single bit of information in because it will get important then I wonder... Briennes deeds or supposed deeds have twice been referred to with the phrase "I´d knight the man who did this". So will they basically "knight" Brienne and does it mean she will survive? :)

Translators nightmare!
i'm portuguese, and although i saw the series online without subtitles, here's what's usually done. they translate what's being said, and underneath those subtitles they use parentheses with the original language
Omg so many manly feels from this
Ariel A. i feel so bad for him but then at the same time I need Bran alive I don't wanna lose another Stark, at least Hodor went out like a hero.

Every time he spoke, for the rest of his life, it was a premonition of his death.
