you are right Emma! There is a spider season! In the fall they are looking for shelter just like those field mice that are trying to sneak into the warmth of our homes!
Oh Emma! You are totally right about spider season! For me, end of August, and the children start back to school, that’s when I find spider webs. Especially in my garden shed. I have to enter with a stick, wave it around, say the magic words, and my path is cleared of spiders and their webs! xox 🇨🇦
It's spider season, but here there are hummingbirds that take the filaments to build nests and the spiders get eaten. I do end up waving a stick in front of me, looking like a mad concert conductor. It works. 😅
Haha I nearly peed myself laughing when I realized that your bone to pick was with me!! 🤣 I looked it up you’re right there is a time you see them more because they come indoors for warmth or are out looking for mates and they are bigger so you spot them more easily, but in the garden I see them year round. You are also right I’m less and less afraid of spiders the more I garden (there is even a short on my channel where I catch myself baby talking a giant orbweaver 😂). They are so good in the garden, they eat so many pests, but in my house, near me, the big ones do freak me out. I still stand by it being adorable, as are so many things you do! 💗
Emma please will you ask somebody in the allotment community to straighten the fork tong, it’ll make much easier for you to dig, love your Diaries and your smiles, Tom.
@@emmasallotmentdiaries look for one at a yard sale that is where I buy all my tools because they’re old and they’re still good and they will outlast me.
It is such a joy watching your videos. I have had a allotment for a short time just this year and you have given me many ideas. I always look forward to watching them with a coffee 😊
Another possible suggestion for the planner, i use the squared pages alot for drawing bed plans but would like a couple of pages to accompany each month, that would be so great! Love your videos, I've learnt so much from you, me being a complete novice to allotment life 😊
Hi Emma, beds are covered overwinter to stop nutrients being washed out of thye soil. A cover is unlikely to stop freezing/thawing as i is not insulating material, in fact cardboard is more insulating than tarpaulin. Hope tha helps. Happy gardening 🙂
You can place the hanging pumpkin in a bit of pantihose (stockings) and tie the stockings to the frame. The stockings will expand as the pumpkin grows. 🎃
It is definitely spider season. I have a stick by the back door for my route to the tomatoes. And my husband has rescued me twice in the last two weeks, when a giant (tarantula sized) spider ran at me. I do a great impression of the lady from the tom and jerry cartoons, clutching my imaginary petticoats 😅
1st time watching your channel. Only 3 minutes into the video and I’m loving it! Your spider comments have me smiling and your interaction with the bird is lovely. I love my multi-generation garden birds.
11:12 This sweeter with cold weather also applies to carrots and potatoes. Probably loads of veg. Winter squash are different though. Winter squash get sweeter left at room temperature for a few weeks. They don't need the cold. Well I guess they will rot anyway with freezing weather. I love potatoes that have been left in containers/the ground for a few weeks of cold weather. They taste amazing roasted.
You should get a big roll of scaffolding debris netting Emma. Really cheap on e-bay. Usually available in green or black. I bought a roll of black roll of 2 metre by 20 metre. I use two lengths overlapped on tall/wide bed structures to cover the whole brassica bed. It's the cheapest way to cover a bed.
Yes. Spiders are bigger and trying to enter houses at this time of year. As a child I had to walk to school down a lane. At certain times of year (I think it was autumn), strands of spider webs were everywhere, floating along in the breeze and even into your face. Coupled with a child's imagination, it was terrifying! BTW I think it is possible to lose arachnophobia over time, even without treatment.
Young Einstein might eat out of your hand. Seems like he tried there - made me laugh out loud. 😂 Adorable. Yay!!! So happy to see bees!! 🐝🐝🐝 I adore your humor. 😂
Yes, there is spider season. The Orb spiders make bigger in your face webs strategically placed, so you will walk into them followed by the spider web ninja dance because you don't know where the spider is. Probably off to the side somewhere, laughing. And the rest are moving, litte ones are sending their web parachutes in the wind blowing all over the place. Yes, they are around all year, but this time of year, they are movers and shakers, lol.
Hi Emma. I am taking in my first allotment plot on Nov 1st. I would love an arch. Can I ask where you got yours.please and what mesh you have over it. Thankyou. Hannah xxx
Nice vlog, thank you. I was wondering if you had any late frost on your plot? We had some on June 8th! It killed all my squashes, which was just ok as I resowed them straight away (will have spares at home next year just in case) and they did really well. Potatoes on the other hand..the ones which were planted early did well despite the frost but the maincrop ones were very stunted and look similar to the ones you pulled out now and the crop is minimal. Really enjoy your vlogs
I would get some neem oil for the white fly should help and it’s organic it won’t hurt it. Probably need to treat the bugs before covering or they will just keep breeding under the cloth and destroy them
IF it snows you get a free dose of Nitrogen on the soil” blue green algae “ Love your pearls of wisdom about frosting veg 👍and congrats on the parsnip extraction 😊
You are so right about the spiders I lived down south (Hampshire) until I was 43 and had a real phobia of spiders and yes you get some all through the year but wow September! I also have always had cats and they eat/play with them so I always have a cat in my room at night lol just in case 😂 So looking forward to the planner P.S I have been binge watching your old videos from when you first started You must feel so proud of how far you have come you have done amazingly well! I wish you and yours love light and laughter xx
I'm lucky and got over spider fear a few years ago, but I still hate walking into the webs! I agree this is totally spider season, webs all over inside and out! We need special spidey vision.
I think the spiders come out at this time of year because they are looking for a mate. It's their version of tinder : ) You know those bugs on the plants with the white fly - they aren't eating them, they are the larvae of the white fly. You need to wipe them off quick before they start munching your plants. White fly are a right pain
Hi Emma I would love a planner, but I’m in New Zealand, our growing season is a little bit longer but otherwise very similar apart from January being July 🤣🤣 I’m still struggling with that after 22 years living here.🧐Anyway a thought, maybe you could have the Southern hemisphere months printed small underneath the Northern Hemisphere 😘😘
This is when the dreaded 'shredded wheat' spiders (as I call them 😂) are everywhere outside. They terrify me if I come across them without warning. Then, with the heavy rain this time of year, the massive house spiders come in and are more terrifying to me, whether I have warning of them or not. Harvest spiders freak me out, too, especially when they do that spinning thing in their webs when frightened. The rest, I'm fine with!
It is deffo spider season - this is the time they all come into my house and glare at us from the corners of the room. They don't bother me much but my partner has deffo woken me up to rescue him before now 😂
I’ve heard it said that once you plant potatoes in a bed you will always have potatoes in that bed. Seems that a gardener will inevitably miss harvesting some potatoes and they will be back every year! 😊
Well spider season has definitely begun, I went in my bathroom yesterday and there as a HUGE house spider, I mean best part of 3 inches, I'd send pic but you'd probably freak out lol I don't mind house spiders, it's the harvest spiders I detest and they just make a mess, move and make another mess and so on. You use a garden fork to dig up potatoes lol
There is definitely a spider season. I'm not scared of spiders but I know that late summer/early autumn is the time when spiders are most active and noticeable.
