  • Shutter Island: Which would be worse?
    What’s happening in this Shutter Island movie clip?
    Sheehan (Mark Ruffalo) talks with Andrew (Leonardo DiCaprio) to see if he regained his grip on reality. However, Andrew still acts like Teddy the investigator, as if he already forgot what they just told him: that he is in fact Andrew Laeddis and has been a patient of Shutter Island for two years. Consequently, Chuck informs Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) and they prepare Andrew’s lobotomy. Before leaving Sheehan, Andrew asks him if it would be worse "to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?".

There they will meet with Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) the lead psychiatrist and head of the institution, and begin to suspect that the whole incident as well as their presence there is part of something way darker. Knowing one of the patients, and having an agenda of his own, Teddy Daniels will try to stay sane in this most disturbing island.

    Ben Kingsley deserves praise for his role. You can see the genuine regret that his character has that he could not help Andrew. That though he went to every length to try and help him and bring him out of his psychosis, he could not. He had to turn his back and admit his failure.

    I would love your opinion:
    What does Teddies last words mean? Does it mean that he is fully aware about his past and technically healed, but rather be lobotomized due to guild?
    Or is he still in state of delusion and makes a general observation regarding the "cover up" on the island?

    • @jcm2606
      @jcm2606 Год назад +13

      I think he was "healed" and that his last words were an attempt to let Chuck/Lester know that this was what he consciously wanted. Just his overall body language was one of conflict in that moment, to the point where he could barely even look Chuck/Lester in the eyes when he said his last words.

    • @DRMIN3R
      @DRMIN3R Год назад +12

      If you notice when chuck/Lester tells the dr that Andrew is back to his original state, Andrew also looks to see the Drs approval of his lobotomy. He was very conscious of his decision. He decided that his life could not carry on without his family and the guilt weighing on his shoulders.

    Idk where we lost it as people of art, but I haven’t seen a movie like this in a long time. Just remakes and superheroes. I even hate when a movie has texts on the screen between two people. Wanna know why? Cuz if it’s blue and it’s always blue texts, Apple is advertising. Everything is an ad. It’s maddening.
