UPDATE: Hey y'all! After working my booty off every day since this rejection, I finally got into USC Roski School of Art and Design! All of the feedback and support from this video played an important role in my journey to making a successful art portfolio, so I wanted to give a little update. If you want to see my ACCEPTED Art Portfolio, I just uploaded it on my channel 💕
Just make sure if you are applying to big art colleges to also apply to small ones with a bigger acceptance rate. If you have potential the small ones are more likely to pick you
Even tho I’m a year late I just want to inform you that you should always make sure to apply to safety schools as well! Safety schools usually have higher acceptance rates and you would be the most disappointed if you don’t get into a dream school. It’s recommended you apply for 2 dream schools and 3 safety schools you can do more of each just make sure you have back ups!
You're an amazing artist! Although they're not perfect, the people at those art colleges probably saw the great potential you've got! I hope whatever future dreams you have, come true! I love reading your short comic illustrations on Instagram! Thanks for spreading so much happyness!!
It's so strange to me that in america you have to be accept that way, bc I think you're going to college to learn no? And art is so subjective, what I think it's beautiful can't be for the other.
Uhmmm no. While ones perception of art is to a large degree dependent on subjective taste, there are somewhat objective standards by which to judge a work of art. Proportion, color, value, perspective and control of medium are all things that can be ascertained about the artist from a work of art. And don’t pretend like this is an American thing, because traditionally it has been European academies that were brutally selective in which artists they would receive and teach. Do you really think the Ecole des Beaux Arts just accepts anyone? Even if you are very talented at producing a realistic image, there is so much that one can still learn about drawing, painting, etc. And for these prestigious art academies they like to operate on the assumption that there incoming students have a basic grasp of the principles of art, otherwise you get an enormous disparity between people who can barely draw an anime figure, and people who are able to expertly render a live model. You can’t possibly hope to have a rubric which caters to such enormous differences in talent. You never reach a point as an artist where you no longer learn; you never ‘cap out’ in artistic ability. But what learning is for someone who is just starting out, and someone who has painting for a decade, is vastly different. And that is why you need admission standards.
@@angieg9105 And we go to art school learning those skills so i still dont get why they require them before hand. I dont feel school will accept me omg.
I’m really sorry you weren’t excepted into these schools, but you shouldn’t feel bad, because you are so talented. I love that bear one. It’s so vibrant and fun
okay but let’s be real. these pieces are gonna be worth GOLD when you blow up. your art is so unique and exactly what i want in my home. they’re dark n kinda wacky. even if its not proportional it fits amazingly to your style. i’d literally pay all my savings for these and i’ve never wanted to actually buy art before. you. are. amazing. and i’ve literally only been on your channel for 15 minutes lmfao.
wow i’m literally in love with like every piece . it’s sucks that colleges don’t appreciate art like this. your style is so unique i love the way you paint portraits !
Please don't beat yourself up, I actually thoroughly enjoyed looking through the portfolio. :) You're already advancing so far with colors and using charcoal (I h8 charcoal), and that scratch one is BOMB. You're doing great
You're doing such a good job. Not every piece turns out being your favorite, but you keep trying new things and they really work! Also college art teachers and staff change their mind on what they like by the hour. In one class my teacher hated a piece and the next day said she loved it before I'd done anything new with it. So don't worry if it didn't work this time. You're bound for great things
Dude I love your art!!! Don’t be discouraged! Like you said, those are some of the most competitive schools in the US, so I guarantee you would’ve gotten in to other schools had you applied!!
You have so much potential and have really great talent! The art world is can be really pretentious and strange, I'm in the creative industry myself, finishing my final year and what I've found is the most successful art pieces are ones that are super loose, free and experimental. Sometimes it's not even about the final product but the exploration of process and the rationale. I'm glad you can look back and roast your work, but don't be too harsh on yourself! It's all amazing progress!
@@rabiacheema6048 I'm a High school junior currently, I'll be a senior in the fall/August. I'm kind of considering not going college though. I kind of want to be an airline attendant. I just want to travel and that's an easier way of doing it. I don't know though. This adult thing came too quickly
It’s not embarrassing AT ALL and thank you so mush for sharing your portfolio. You showed lots of curiosity towards arts and made so many attempts to it which I really appreciate. You definitely have the potential to be an artist. That 15-min piece is really intriguing. Maybe try take some professional class could help with your painting skills and better express your ideas next time.
I think you have great potential! Please keep practicing and don’t give up, I can tell you have a creative mind which gives you potential to produce amazing work! I think you were just missing more real life observations and that’s what most schools look for, human figure drawings as well as hand drawings

Hi, this is a great portfolio! However, I think I can see why RISD would reject such an amazing portfolio. It's not because they didnt like your art, but more so because it lacked a narration (theme), and it's a bit hard to tell what you wanted to choose as your course (like fine art, graphic design etc) But again, that's just my opinion haha. Its a wonderful portfolio though
i do agree with the part about the theme, however i will say that when RISD reviewed my portfolio recently they told me to keep in mind that RISD has a foundation year! because of this, everyone basically goes into it undecided. they said that I was very focused on one major and I should keep my options open!
Woah. Though you were rejected, your arts are really inspiring and i get those what your explaining about it. I'm working on my portfolio... so thanks. These are really cool.
Please don't be hard on yourself. I recently applied to art school, and I understand the anxiousness and self-criticism of it, but sometimes we need to take a step back and hear other people's perspectives of our creations. Art is subjective, and yours was really good in my opinion. YOU ARE TALENTED. please don't doubt yourself. Rejection can hurt, but that does not take away from your own creative ability, and beautiful creations. Your work is great, and I could feel the emotion from it. It hurt to hear you over criticize yourself so much (one person to another, I do the same). No one can tell you the level of art skill, and your skill level except yourself. I understand feeling like you don't have a voice and using art as a way to make a difference (in reference to the trump artwork.) Keep working hard, and know that your art is appreciated, please stop criticizing your FANTASTIC artwork. It's hard to hear people turn down things we put our heart and soul into, but I SEE your creations and I appreciate them. No one's art is spotless, real diamonds have imperfections, fake ones are perfect.
It’s crazy to me how if your a student learning something like art your rejected from a college which is supposed to TEACH you , because you don’t know enough lmao it blows my mind. The figure drawings are not bad at all. I went to art school and I saw the worst figure studies I have ever seen. These are wayyyyy better than you think 😂
if i’m applying for a stem major, does my art portfolio have to be really good? everyone is telling me to submit one to boost my chances, but my skills aren’t that good. i’m just doing it to showcase my interest in the arts. also, i love your art wtf !!!!!
While your portfolio doesn't have to be the best (since you're applying for a stem major), it would be best if you included a good portfolio. It shows another side of you to the admissions officer who wont know you outside of your application. Including a portfolio would definitely give you an advantage as it gives the admissions officer a better chance to get to know you.
Well, I agree that politics should stay out of your portfolio because you don't know who's judging your work and they may have opposite opinions, but that probably wasn't the only reason. The schools he applied to are really tough to get in to
