Christie & Alonso, this is the most Siskel-&-Ebert-at-each-other's-throats I've ever seen you two. Please see MORE divisive movies. "The funeral scene is desperately unfunny.... I'm just shocked that you enjoyed anything about this." If it were possible to subscribe again, I would.
Alonso went harder for this than Oppenheimer
Lol
Thats kinda why I, for the most part, disregard his opinion.
Opp was the strangest mixture of interesting, classy and skilled with SNL film parody sketch I've seen in some time. For the first hour I kept glancing around the theatre wondering if anyone else seemed to be feeling this totally odd mixture and wondering if we were being punked.
@@mykhedelic6471 Same!
I respect his critiques and opinions. This just amused me.@@dieselthejeweler
Love a cold open where Christy comes roaring out of the gate
It sounds like no one had the clout to hold Seinfeld to account for the script. Shame.
I think the problem was there were too many writers on it. It had four credited writers and probably a lot more who weren't credited. And then you add all the bits by the various comedians...
I'm tired of movies about brands. It feels like these movies are just commercials.
Christy is on fire and correct. This is a soulless product and I don't trust anybody who praises this lame self-insulated non-comedy.
"I like breakfast crap and there's a January 6 reference so this movie was great!" is indeed a mark against a critic praising this crap.
The pain Christy must be in when she has to be more polite towards movies like Unfrosted and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 because her co-critics liked them lol
Thanks guys for being honest! Not to a create a Jerry bashing session, but…..Larry David is the talent and Jerry was the frontman.
Oh, stop it!
I thought that this film was awful
The saddest thing is I didn’t think it was awful. I thought it was mediocre, which is worse. This is a seasoned 70yo comedian given so much access to resources to produce sub par content. That is what makes me sad. He should be using his resources for younger comedians and artists to elevate new content.
This could have been good if it was written and directed by Christopher Guest and filmed like mockumentary. That could have been funny and clever but this ain’t.
I was in shock at how bad this was - especially considering the available cast. It was SO bad, I'm starting to think this is some kind of messed up experiment by Netflix to see if they can get viewership boosted from people hate-watching it. Total trainwreck.
I think your missing the point of the movie. It was meant to be a completely over the top silly satirical movie.
@@ThePakman999 We understand what it was trying to do... it failed for us.
This movie is a perfect example of the Metamodernism era we are currently experiencing.
For someone who complains endlessly about not being respected for their comedy these days, i think Alonso could've been more harsh about a movie written, directed by, and starring that guy. Sounds like a bad idea for a film, looks terrible, and I certainly won't watch. Thanks Christy for your take on this.
I just have to say it’s so sad to see what Jerry Seinfeld has devolved into. He’s afflicted with the same out of touch billionaire head worms Chapelle and Musk are suffering from. He has the audacity to say something as stupid as “you can’t do risk taking comedy anymore in this PC age” mere weeks after the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale! It’s so utterly ridiculous.
As if Jerry is known for edgy humor in the first place.
Streaming services pull episodes from shows they find offensive like always sunny in Philadelphia. Jerry is right.
Elon Musk might be a con man babbling buffoon but Dave Chappelle is neither out of touch nor a billionaire or a head worm. The man is a genius and that’s that.
@real100talk5 you're on crack..
Curb is very left leaning. It’s still funny.
Seinfeld should have made a comedy on how a 40 year old adult male had himself a 17 year old girlfriend in high school.I bet she was still eating Pop-tarts....frosted only.
😂
Not to mention that there is a boycott on Kellogg rn.
[Jerry and Elaine are sitting in Monk's Café, enjoying their usual coffee.]
Jerry: So, I was grocery shopping yesterday, and I passed by the Pop-Tarts aisle.
Elaine: Oh, the "breakfast of champions".
Jerry: Exactly. But here's the thing: They had this new flavour-blueberry lemonade.
Elaine: Blueberry lemonade!? Who comes up with this stuff?
Jerry: That's what I'm saying! It's like they're playing flavour roulette over there at the Pop-Tarts factory.
Elaine: You know, I tried one of those artisanal toaster pastries once. It had goat cheese and fig jam filling.
Jerry: Goat cheese in a Pop-Tart? That's a crime against breakfast.
Elaine: Tell me about it. I took one bite and immediately regretted it. I felt like I was betraying my toaster.
Jerry: It's like they're trying to reinvent the wheel, but instead, they end up with a square. Literally.
Elaine: And don't get me started on the frosting-to-filling ratio. It's like they're holding out on us.
Jerry: Exactly. You bite into one expecting a burst of flavour, but all you get is disappointment.
[They both nod in agreement, taking a sip of their coffee.]
Jerry: You know, maybe we should stick to the classics. Brown sugar cinnamon never lets you down.
Elaine: Amen to that.
[They share a knowing look as the Seinfeld bass riff plays in the background.]
I’m glad Christie brought up some of the obvious lame jokes like, “Vietnam, that sounds like a good idea.” It needed to be funnier than that. Should have tapped Larry David.
That was a completely ad libbed line by Gaffigan.
@@cactaceous Not bad for an ad lib but bad for a movie. That should’ve been left on the editing floor.
Just finished it and honestly... I'm with Alonso on this. Corny as hell but for some reason i couldn't stop smiling. Yes there were jokes that didn't land and lingered for too long but it didn't offend me. Even the scene Christy mentioned I wasnt offended by. I think it was more about making fun of the people involved if you know what I mean.
I am totally in agreement with Alonso on this one! It's nothing amazing but I did laugh quite a bit. It's pretty funny!
And that funeral scene was hilarious, come on. 😅
It worked on me. It is an awful movie but fun
Looks like Oppenheimer needed more breakfast scenes
The movie doesn’t work, but it reminded me of a few of the absurdist, screwball comedies of the 1960s. Something like It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. If that doesn’t match your sensibilities, this film being intentionally dumb will just annoy you.
Whooooooa. This is trash compared to that movie.
I also have a low-key obsession with breakfast cereals and products, their history, their marketing. Just a few days ago, I was telling my wife how once upon a time there was such a thing as chocolate Cap’n Crunch, known as Choco Crunch. That it was delicious and that we could probably blame it not lasting on its mascot, who was basically an anemic frog with bubonic plague.
“I’m not going to defend this movie”. Then proceeds to defend it. I love Alonzo ☺️
Bee movie was unwatchable too. I never found Seinfeld funny. My friends used to have watching parties and I wouldn't go. My coworkers still talk about that show constantly. I tried, but I couldn't stand that show and the characters in it. Cornball voices and hack schtick just doesn't do it for me. Curb your Enthusiasm is my favorite show, though.
I was a kid in the 1960's and I loved the movie. Yes it's silly. But it's a spoof. With all the heavy news we are subjected to each day, I was happy to just giggle and I'm laugh. Loved that they brought in John Hamm too.
We know it's a spoof... we don't need to be told lol We just want better funny movies
I just saw this yesterday. I loved Seinfeld as a 90s show. As a kid of the 80s, I loved the ridiculous cereal award premises. The actors were great, set design, costumes, amazing. Stay tuned for the end credits, they are more fun than the movie.
I am of a certain age, I got all the historical jokes, some were funnier than others. Children talking like adults is hack.
Seinfeld laments about the lack of comedy. Netflix just gave him ALL OF THE MONEY to do whatever he wanted. This was the comedy he came up with.
However, the Anti-Woke Seinfeld had people of color in the movie? For what? Who does he wish to look good in front of? He knows POC didn’t live his town Massapequa, LI in the 60s. Probably due to Redlining. Stand on business, Sir!
You CAN defend this movie. For Seinfeld, nostalgia, cereal, 60s fans
OMG, reviews like these are my absolute FAVORITE to watch! I can’t tell you how much I love when you disagree on a movie! Especially when it comes to a movie like this!? Upon watching the trailer the conflicting thought I had was that this looks like it could be either the funniest thing ever or the absolute worst piece of crap to come out in 2024? Hearing you guys articulate those conflicting ideas is hilarious! Also the big double AMC adjacent cameo has been absolutely ruined already by Netflix, before the thing even released on Netflix this weekend!
Ah that's a bummer. You'll have to let us know if you end up watching this.
I couldn't even finish watching this movie. How they got all these big names to sign onto this steaming pile is beyond me.
This review was so funny and fun! I am not saying you two should disagree to disagree, but it works so well because we know how much you two respect each other. 😀
I felt that if they were going to make a fictional story/fake history, I would have preferred a focus on the mascots, like make them a mystery team/murder discovery hijinks. Maybe I'm thinking that because of Fall Guy.
Who knew a Pop-Tarts movie could be this divisive 😄
This movie was incredibly fun, absolutely loved it. Exactly what I wanted from a Jerry Seinfeld movie about the origin or Pop-Tarts. I will die on that hill for it, love it when movies just have fun. Dozens of wacky cameos, wacky schmaltzy stuff and it most definitely worked. The production design and cinematography are very boldly, loudly blasting to the viewer how much of a hug it is to advertising and how surreal it all is. To me, this is one of those movies that separate who can be my true friend and who can't. To crap on a movie this ridiculously fun is just mean and tone deaf. Still enjoy your thoughts though Christy and yeah we probably couldn't be true friends! Haha!
Ha, glad you had a good time.
I loved the movie! uh-oh SpaghettiOs.
lol, I am not surprised. I actually had a friend who worked on Bee Movie.... and he said working on Jerry's voice was the most dead voice he's every worked with there. Kinda satisfying to know how much of a hack he is.
You introduced me to The Empty Bowl podcast Alonso, which I love, and I don't even eat cereal anymore. Sad to hear this might suck, but I'll check it out.
I have a soft spot for cereals too.
So funny how Christie is almost exploding inside because Alonso actually thinks the movie is quite okay. I have to say, the movie is totally okay.
That's the problem.. it's meh.
Will you guys review “I saw the tv glow.” I wanna know if it’s worth my time or if I should skip it
Yes, on Tuesday!
Milk man on the grassy knoll was even worse than the insurrection bit. On one hand I like that the movie treated nothing as sacred, but yeah, a lot of the time ideas and cameos were in service of jokes that didn't land.
I’ve been agreeing with Alonso a lot in the past year, and I share some of his cultural obsessions and have a high tolerance for silliness, so I watched this thing thinking I might enjoy it. IT’S SO BAD. I mean maybe you could edit this down to a decent 4-minute Funny Or Die video, but as it is - wow. Melissa McCarthy tried her best and had her moments, and it was nice to see Sarah Cooper back in action and there was that one cameo that was actually funny - but that’s all I got. And I agree that the mascot strike was not only offensive for its January 6 references but it also seemed like a patronizing put-down of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The movie was an expression of smug privilege; if you’re rich and famous you can get a lot of extremely talented people to make a piece of garbage, while a lot of great screenplays by people you’ve never heard of will never get produced. Ugh. I might have to watch Cocaine Bear again to get that out of my system.
I feel like I would review unfrosted and call it my first movie review and it would be a good start
I went from watching, to fast-forwarding, to skipping, to stopping entirely 3/4s of the way in. Sorry Jerry, I really tried.
I'm with Alonso. It's a fun watch with some good gags. And it's pretty lame, as well, but it knows it. You are getting exactly what the trailer promised. Also, I thought Peter Dinklage's cameo was pretty good.
2 outta 10. The 2 is for the cast members. The movie gets a ZERO
Man, the funeral scene made me quit the movie. This is a really bad film. I love Seinfeld (the series) and I really think Jerry is great at stand-up... I even liked "Bee Movie"! But this film is beyond ridiculous.
Whyyyyy are there soooo many bad movies made?! With talented people???
The irony here is that the actual history behind Kellogg's and breakfast cereal is pretty ridiculous itself and rife with material for the kind of edgy, boundary-pushing comedy Jerry complains he's not allowed to do. Eugenics, racism and masturbation, it's real Mel Brooks territory. Instead - Poptarts.
The Insurrection parody was about the only part of the movie that reached the level of "kinda funny." The rest of the movie was a slog, with all the performances way too "in-the-know." When all your actors know its a comedy, and ACT like it's a comedy, it doesn't work. Especially, hen they are not comedic actors. The only ones who were able to pull it off ok were Melissa McCarthy, and (kinda) Jim Gaffigan.
There were bits and pieces that made me lightly giggle...the woman cutting the banana at the funeral, and the 21 pop salute. But those moments were way too far and few between.
I kept thinking that if i read the script, instead of watching the movie, i might have found it a lot funnier. Some of the jokes were clever, but the delivery was so over-the-top, that it was cringeworthy.
This movie was awesome… I’m an early Gen-Xer; I loved it.
It is light, funny, and is something you can watch with your whole family.
I loved Marjorie Post and Edsell Kellogg… Nostalgic Americana and lots if fun.
I can understand not liking a movie. But i don't understand being so angry about it.
THe Jan 6th sequence was hilarious. Distateful yes. But hilarious.
I am definitely somewhere between Alonso and Christie on this one, I'm not sure how great it is for the best part of your movie to be the cameos. I'd say it was worth the watch for THE cameo alone (Netflix's Instagram page spoiled it for me this morning......) But definitely, considering the sheer volume of amazing comedians, I would have expected more. Hugh Grant pretty much stole the show on most of the movie for me, his whole character was pretty hilarious. The sea monkey ravioli gag was not funny at all for me, and I was beside myself when the January 6th stuff happened. Personally I'm not bothered it happened but it seemed like a wasted opportunity in some ways. Giving this one a 5/10 at best.
I watched "Unfrosted" today. I guess my expectations were too high, but it was not as funny as I had expected... I bet they thought it was funny as they were playing it themselves, but for audience, it's a different story.
I'm smack in the middle of you two with a 3.5/4ish or so. I also appreciated the production design and costumes. I smiled and/or laughed a few times. I did the Leo DiCaprio 'point at the screen' the whole time with each cameo. I liked some of the needle drops. But yeahhhhhh. While I realize that this movie was never going for 'reality' and authenticity, I mostly just found it grating in its unfunniness.
I saw the trailer and figured Kellogg’s wanted what Mattel got. As somebody who toured Kellogg’s multiple times in the mid-70s and has a low dopey comedy threshold, I’ll give it a pass.
What she said
I loved the funeral scene 😅
After watching it, now seems like as good a time as any to give serious consideration to taking my own life. We are all going to go sooner or later!
As someone who is from Battle Creek, Michigan, I’m offended
Love the back and forth lol
Thank you!
Schumer, Mccarthy can't stand them. Seinfeld is a 90s has been. Skipping this one.
This seems like the Weird Al movie with Daniel Radcliffe but Jerry Seinfeld seems very out of touch
That was done much more skillfully!
I'm dreading/looking forward to seeing this, if only for the train wreck aspect. From all that I've seen of it so far, my expectation is that this is on the scale next to History of the World Part 1, or any Mel Brooks film, Airplane, and maybe Weird (Weird Al movie) sort of just throwing stuff out there and seeing what sticks. All that said, my prediction is that I'll line up with Christy's revulsion. The trailer's gags left me unmoved.
You'll have to check back in and let us know!
If you're 80 years old and/or laugh at watching paint dry, this movie is for you! Enjoy.
Christy's not not having it! nope! lol
Here for the comments. Jerry is awesome. At least there is 1 (one) comedy movie. Mindless, but at least-among gun toting NUTS and Marvel madness, there is 1 (one) comedy. This is refreshing as doublemint gum among 2024 sadness of Netflix "hay-4-horses" movies where in a Trump-town as I am in-the state of the movies is SO SO SO SO SO SAD! B movies like this are our salvation (and that is sad-but true).
I thought this movie was really funny, and fun. I never watched Seinfeld (I bartended on Thursday Must See TV nights, so I missed all those shows), and I don't like Pop Tarts (Toaster Strudel forevah!). But, this movie was just ridiculous. And fun.
See it being a Netflix means it has a lower bar to jump over than other movies. It is like notch above a straight to DVD movie.
The first 15 minutes is an eternity
Watch episodes of "The food that made America". The story of Pop Tarts on that episode is way better!
I loved Road to Wellville
I loved it good show.. Im history guy so loved it!
i had a good time with this silly story. Exactly what I needed after a long week. Just something to shut off the brain and enjoy.
Haven't seen it but am diggin' the fuller coiffed hair Jerry's rockin!
This fictionalized history, sorta reminded me of Weird, the fictionalized history of Al Yankovic.
Indeed, Weird was awesome though. Thanks for watching!
I feel like Weird did what Unfrosted was trying to do 100x better
It was interesting listening to this review because I disliked this movie, but nearly every joke Christy mentioned as examples of "bad jokes" were things I found funny. Like the Vietnam reference isn't just a "throwaway" joke. There are a lot of jokes in the movie about how we're watching a story from the perspective of rich people in a more "innocent time." (Like when Seinfeld talks about sending his kids to college, which costs $200)
I don't get what is offensive joking about the January 6th riots. Christy sounds like she's talking about somebody joking about the holocaust or something. On January 6th, nobody was killed except for rioters who were killed by police. (If I hear one more liberal make the false claim cops were killed when this did not happen, I'm going to scream.) I found this segment to be one of the funnier bits. But even if it failed, how it was offensive is really puzzling to me. (There were also other Trump jokes in the movie.)
For me, the movie failed because it didn't have consistent satirical target, nor a very compelling story. They set up that Stan and Bob had trouble working together before, he has to go and recruit her, and then they never have a single conflict during the entire movie. The movie's failure just seems to be overconfidence in how funny the premise is inherently, which leads to the lazy cameos and more tired gags.
Cop died from injuries.. that's not a false claim.. lol
The only thing offensive about this is how unfunny it is.
@@sproductionsinc He had a stroke, dude.
Sounds like you're defending, Alonso... 😝
Now I have to see this - the great divide - more than our politicians…
This movie reminds me of that terrible movie, Movie 43, which had all other cameos/celebrities. I hate that movie and Alonso brought it up at the end.
I’m probably with Christy on this one.
Your generation doesn't get the movie, and that's all there's to it.
Ha, this is Alonso's generation (kinda).
@@BreakfastAllDayno, he wasn't born yet 😊
Hey guys I love the channel but you just did my biggest pet peeve for these non-spoiler videos... you describe scenes detail by detail. I want to hear your opinions on it ...if it was good or bad.... I don't want to hear you telling me exactly part by part on how the scene goes. I had the mute when you were talking about the funeral grave or whatever. Please guys when doing non-spoiler reviews don't talk about the scenes. Worse than modern day trailers... Lol.
Thanks for your feedback. We think it's important to give specific examples of what works and what doesn't, while also balancing the need to avoid spoilers.
Dude looks like The Beast from X men.
This was Gawd awful, I played it at the fastest speed possible and still couldn't get through it, I shut it off...Would love a John Waters version of this much better ❤
Terrible movie The only quality thing he ever did was a sitcom TV show. That was it. Everything else was clearly Larry David LOL
Also, you should always judge movies as if you pay to see them in a theater because it's a movie. And if you wouldn't pay a $10 ticket to go see it, it's trash more often than not
The bee movie wasn't really that funny 😕.. I love jerry on a personal level, but tbh on a comical level, he's really nothing without Larry David 🤷🏾♀️...That being said, if he would have cast Larry as his breakfast rival instead of Amy movie would have instantly been Hysterical😂😂
Sounds like no one born after 1970 has any reason to watch this.
Seinfeld is not funny. I was dragged to one of his stand up shows about 6 or 7 yrs ago which was a waste of money and it was expensive.
Larry David is the comic genius for me.
1000% Jerry owes his entire luxury lifestyle the comedic genius of Larry David😊
Ok. It was so stupid and so silly and I loved it. lol I have bad taste.
What hurt Unfrosted more than anything was the writing. It was never fresh, much like the Pop-Tart. I felt like I’d watched this type of movie before so it felt cliche and unoriginal. I made it to about the first 30 minutes having never laughed and decided to stop watching. I liked the look of it and thought Jerry did a good job as a director though.
Now that I think about have we ever had a full on bio pick about JKF. There was the movie about his time in the navy and the Cuban Crises and of course Oliver Stones three hours of tin foil conspiracy theory movie. But we never had a full on bio pick of him.
It's a pop tart movie. Have fun with the cameos and don't think too much
I watched this film last night on Netflix, and I have to agree with Christie on this one, I had to make myself watch it all the way through, and I was really shocked and offended about the January 6th scene. The rest of it was just silly and a waste, even with all the starpower.
It blows my mind that some people like this film.
Alonso is working *so hard* to defend this movie. Why? He seems to be so starstruck by all the big names in this movie that he has lost his objectivity. I'm starting to realize, objectively, that he's just a fanboy hack. 😂
Also, Alonso spends the whole video trying to defend his movie and then at the end says he's not defending this movie. Huh? 🤔
Yikes, but I gotta admit I'm morbidly curious. At least it's just on Netflix so I won't feel any remorse if I bail or have it playing in the background... like with 80% of their content.
David here I been a movie buff for over fifty years and I had very mixed feelings about this movie I liked the look of the movie and the nostalgia overload. However when they got to the so called January 6 jokes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I was so upset to make fun of 7 people killed and many others injured was not funny. I was so glad that you Christy agreed with me. I went ahead and chatted and called Netflix to complain about the scene. Yes you can call them to complain. They took my call with a live operator and read me there script and made a note of it. I feel that Mr Signfield, who’s the public apology for the insensitive way. He did that scene. Thanks and see you at the movies 🍿 😊
Oh wow! Thanks for telling us all of that, David.
No artist owes anyone an apology for his or her handling of anything. Don’t think the scene is in good taste? That’s fine. Lower your Letterboxd rating to reflect it. But where on earth do you or anyone come to the conclusion that what is attempted in a film should line up with what you think the artist should or shouldn’t be doing? We live in crazy times that notions such as yours are so widespread…
You called Netflix to complain about a joke?! Seinfeld was right. We are living in a Kareniverse!
@cactaceous we can always complain. People complained about black people on their TV back in the day.
@@cactaceous It was much more than a joke, it was a whole scene and it was very insensitive. Have a good day
Idk, made me laugh quite a bit. All i can ask from a movie about fuckin' pop tarts.
Let me just say it. If you like Unfrosted you are silly, you laugh at the three stooges and monty python and you are good in bed. If you do not like Unfrosted you are certainly not good in bed. And look hard and you know what I mean.
A movie as funny as pop tarts are nutritious….
Haven't seen this yet but now after this fantastic disagreement review I feel obligated to watch it. I really don't mind politically incorrect humor (Borat, all day forever) but I'm struggling to see how a Jan 6 joke fits into this and manages to be funny. Another problem is that I do not find Jerry Seinfeld funny in the slightest single bit.
I'm fine with origin stories and I'm a believer that any story at all can be done and should not be off limits, because it is how you tell the story and how you make the movie. I wonder how this material would have been handled by John Lee Hancock, who so wonderfully told the origin of Mary Poppins in Saving Mr. Banks, and the origin of McDonald's in The Founder...?
We enjoy Borat too! But this is not Borat.
