I follow a page on Instagram called Cool Craigslist Cars, and every once in a while, there comes a post that states “Why did this car survive” and is usually followed by some random, once common, but not anymore car that is unbelievably still on the road. Well, why did this car survive?
Back in the mid to late 90’s, GM really needed a breakthrough car that could confidently compete with the likes of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and the Ford Taurus. Going head-to-head with the top three sedan offerings in North America was going to be a tough call. Chevrolet decided to revive a nameplate that was on hiatus since 1983 and give it to this all-new platform. Taking the existing N-Body Platform and extending the wheelbase and called it the P-90 platform.
The new for 1997 Malibu was an all-new design, front wheel drive and served as the replacement for the aging Chevrolet Corsica. Also in 1997, Oldsmobile introduced a temporary badge-engineered placeholder variant called the Cutlass to fill the gap left by the Cutlass Ciera until the introduction of the Alero in 1999.
So, why did this car survive? Well, for one, despite being an entry-level car, they were exceptionally well-built and very reliable. It offered standard A/C, Hydraulic engine mounts and four-wheel ABS brakes. Remember, this was 1997…
In addition, it also earned Motor Trend’s prestigious Car of the Year award in 1997.
Our fifth generation Malibu is a base level car with the V6 engine and Preferred Equipment Group 1 option package installed.
Our car was produced at the Oklahoma Assembly Plant in Oklahoma City in August of 2001. Production from 2002 onwards was moved to Lansing, Michigan.

Neighborhood Car Reviews gives you an alternative look at the already impressive list of car videos that are online. What we do is a first-person walk-around of the car. We show features and details that are on the particular model being shown. Performance data, safety equipment and the like are usually not shown due to the already enormous amount of videos that cover the aforementioned topics.
We like to cover everything from classics to high-end and everything in between.

While I’m not a GM fan by any means, it’s very nice to see one of these in such wonderful condition without the interior all busted up & fallen apart. This is likely the nicest one of these around.

Nice review. I used these a lot as rental vehicles. Would love to review one on my channel.
