It didn't really end, Joffrey died and Sansa ran away and they never saw each other again before Margaery died

Margaery did care for Sansa I believe but she also saw the benefits of befriending her at the same time. The main reason was so she and Olenna would get information about her betrothed in Joffrey and later to marry Sansa off to her brother Loras so her rich family could have claim to the North. But in the end, that result would’ve benefited Sansa greatly alongside the Tyrells because she would’ve safe and happy in Highgarden. And the entire family knew that. I do think Margaery genuinely liked and cared about Sansa in a way but also knew full well what her claim was about and the benefits of having it in her possession.
