Bakelite jewelry was made in the 1920's and '30's. That gives you some idea of Bakelite's age. It never would have been used in the '60's, '70's or'80's on electonics. Better plastics were used then for durability. Just an FYI and reference for you.

I almost laughed out out loud when he said the radio was Bakelite. It’s definitely vintage but not Bakelite, and he would have sold a piece of Bakelite like that for a great deal. Bakelite hasn’t been used commercially since the 1950’s.
I have a feeling that red radio was like a free gift if you join something or buy something back in the 80s I could be wrong, also I don’t think it’s Bakelite.
Are the speakers detachable? Or does the center part come out to be a Walkman? After some searching, I am seeing similar players. A reverse Google image of the player also brings up similar units in various off brands. Your money will be made off that color as well as if it’s a detachable Walkman. Hope that helps in your search!

@@beardedthriftmachine only a year later...but this radio is exactly like one that my sister received as a gift at my Dad's work Christmas party in the 80's. Hers was blue but the design and everything is EXACT. My Dad worked for Intalco, now called Alcoa. Every Christmas they did a Christmas party for the employees and their families. All the kids were given tickets to collect presents at the end of the party, it was amazing. Not sure if that can help narrow it down if you still have it lol, but figured information always helps! And, go figure, there is an Alcoa in South Carolina.

There are a couple of reasons you couldn't fond this particular stereo. MusicMate is Soundesign or at least they were when I was growing up in the 80s. This still isn't the exact thing but chances are because they were such cheap products then they just were never popular enough for many people if any to have really bought them. Even another of the larger named Audio companies are from the same Era and have secrets that alot of people don't know it's always funny to hear people arguing over certain companies' equipment nit even knowing they and 3 others are all under one manufacturer 😆. Anyway the point of all of this is it's basically the same thing just a different variation either meant to appeal to a certain size bank account or a specific social demographic either way at about that time the two companies and a couple others if im not mistaking were all under one manufacturer.

You missed 2 key words in my comment...way overpriced. If it's a business they're trying to rip you off because knowing the value of what they're selling is the only way to not fail. If it's a yard sale they're either trying to rip you off or completely out of touch with the real value of their items. Either way it will probably end up being a time consuming hassle that bears no fruit. Some people can make it work if they break the ice with the seller or use their knowledge of current values to spot a deal. I wouldn't even try. You can try to get the going rate for your items but you won't sell much. You'd fetch a better price online. I know prices, and if they're all too high they jump out at me and I'm out. Either somethings wrong or somethings up. Bargain hunting is all about knowing values and spotting deals. Nobody goes to yard sales to pay retail or more. Why is that? It really doesnt help your cash flow if you have hundreds and thousands of dollars in stuff sitting on shelves. Is that normal for this kind of business? If so, i dont want my cash sitting on shelves doing nothing.
Everyone was caught off guard when the world stop 2 Years ago- people couldn't shop, get inventory and businesses went under. No yard sales auctions estate sales etc. I now will always have some on hand if that ever happens again. That's my Choice you can run it however you see fit

Try a reverse image search for the radio.
It comes up with the Sony one
If it is baklite if you rub it with your finger and warm it up it has a distinct smell almost like a circuit board smell and doesnt smell like plastic

Bakelite is 1930's old. If you rub it with you're thumb for a few seconds, you will get a smell of plastic.
