Good on you for teaching your kid valuable lessons such as 'satanism is bad' and what happens when you remove ethics from scientific pursuit (the answer is simple, you get a hell portal)
It is good, although not groundbreakingly so. It would be nice if future FPSs would take lessons from this Doom and (re)focus on well paced, fast and fluid combat and less on tons of sluggish story exposition.
+The Cutter, heres the thing, Quake was more or less DOOM in a 3D engine, now that DOOM has its own 3D games, what reason is there to make another single player quake?
joseaca Not at all. Quake had a totally different feel to it. The combat pace was slowed down a bit, however, the creepiness factor was scaled up to max. There hasn't been a game like Quake ever since.
I still remember playing Doom and Duke Nukem against friends in my high school's computer lab, back in Ye Olde Nineteen-Hundred Nineties before schools figured out how to lock-down their computers and make students use them for only legitimate purposes. It helped that our computer lab teacher was a former Marine who thought those games were hilarious; if we finished our work on time he would turn off the lights and say "okay guys, time for killin'!" Ah, Mr. Cardoza, I wonder where you are now.
Doom 1993: Oh no, this game is full of demonic influences and will cause our children to worship satan! Doom 2016: *Beams pentagrams directs into your head*
I've played Wolfenstein 3D when it was released. I got actually scared so many times when the blue uniform dudes appeared around the corners. The game was just unbelievable, it was fast, funny, addictive. I also was one of the first to witness the first run of a new something, downloaded via BBS to 1.44 disks: DOOM. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing in front of my eyes, I thought it was a movie or something. The sound was out of this world. I thought I was dreaming. I spent so many nights of my College years running (no mouse) through the DOOM corridors, full of anxiety. There wasn't, literally, anything even remotely close to DOOM back in those days. It was such a market disruptive force. I only grasp anything resembling that awe sensation when I first saw Crysis and its unbelievable beach scenes (with crabs! for God's sake...). This is one of the most beaten sentences of our days, but, what a time to be alive.
I remember playing Doom in the early 90s. Without tutorials and so on, and especially for a kid, the game was haunting and some levels appeared unbeatable. I remember we even searched for clues in dictionary (we are Polish, and didn't know English well back then). When we learned what 'doom' means, we concluded the protagonist is meant to die, and that the game is designed to be unbeatable.
ok this might be my internal hippy hipster kicking in but for some reason it bothers me that the shotgun chambering animation in doom 1 and 2 is just the doomguy's hand moving and the shotguns forearm doesnt move which is just HOW DID THAT BULLET GET CHAMBERED AND THE GUN GOT COCKED

Chris Purolover I feel as if even though doom 2016 wasn’t nearly as legendary as the original, I’m just happy the game was good and didn’t ruin the franchise like other modern reboots have in the past.
@TubNub the original basically paved the way for PC to be a platform of video games, and also, revolutionized FPS games in general. So yes, no games nowadays could reach the legendary level of games like Dunes, Doom, Half-life, etc.

Hello yes I am fully aware I had the worst take ever here, it has been made clear to me multiple times over the years - no need for you to waste your energy writing an essay on why this is very obviously stupid and unrealistic. With that in mind, here is what this comment said before this edit: I sometimes wonder about things like this. If I showed someone from the 90s the newest game from their favourite franchise, would they like it, or would they get scared and never want to touch a video game ever again?
If you read the manual it states that DOOM guy was sent to a Marine base on Mars as punishment for punching his S.O. and refusing to fire on civilians, while his S.O. is recovering in a hospital at Pearl Harbor Hawaii.
Fun Fact: John Carmack became interested in video games after playing Space Invaders. At age 14, he helped a group of kids break into his school to steal Apple II computers. He was subsequently arrested and spent a year in a juvenile home.
Also he was sent for psychiatric evaluation, the report said that carmack didn't feel any empathy for other human beings and described him as:"a brain with legs" or something like that, probably the idea of the spidermastermind came from there

With the state that Hollywood is in right now with its constant shoving of SJW/Political Correctness bullshit down everyone's throats these days, don't expect much of what makes Duke who he is, because it would hurt too many people's feelings. And come on, John Cena? Really?
**Taken from the original Doom 1 manual** ------------------------------------------------------------ THE STORY SO FAR ------------------------------------------------------------ You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation. The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for fifty million miles, your day consisted of suckin' dust and watchin' restricted flicks in the rec room. For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest supplier, has used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them have either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity-babbling vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the research is suffering a small set-back, but everything is under control. A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos. "We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsuccessful. You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead. It's Up To You. Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving you with only a pistol. If only you could get your hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station. As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no turning back now.
My biggest issue with Doom 3 is that it fleshed out this story in such a pedestrian way. Oh, a wayward scientist that apparently has been possessed. What about the corporate oversight? What about the idea of a society that created "Berserker packs" and presses on with "military volunteers" for teleporters after stringent combat that called for firing on civilians? "It's pathetic!"-Burke in Aliens There is so much more to say here that ties into timeless human plights as hinted by this small initial story given for the first game; societal and corporate hubris, a general lack of kindness and respect for people on a societal wide scale, technological dissonance, societal homogenization, and so many eschatological ideas.
Fuck me I can't believe this video released before Doom 2016. What an excellently produced video. Great editing, a strong presentation and an overall great aesthetic with very good scripting & voiceover.
You wanna talk about horror in Doom? I will never forget this moment as long as I live. I was a kid, maybe 12 or so, playing Doom 2 in the mid 2000s on my dad's computer, while he worked on his laptop nearby in the same room. I was playing MAP15: Industrial Zone (I think. I'm not 100%, but it was DEFINITELY one of the large city levels), and at one point there is a dark hallway with a lit alcove at the end, with a switch on the wall. I flip the switch, and suddenly, all the lights go out. All the monsters were dead in this area so I had nothing to worry about, or so I thought. I turn around and start creeping my way out, when suddenly, a Hell Knight appears in front of me, letting out its battle cry. I don't think I have ever been more scared playing a video game in my entire life. I screamed at the top of my lungs, jumped back away from the screen, and slammed my hands onto the desk. My dad was probably more scared than me, since he had no idea what I was freaking out about. I didn't play Doom for a while after that.
If we wanna talk horror in doom we need look no further than the doom three pump shotgun.past 5 feet it feels like im farting on the enemies. Yes i know its a shotgun but come on

The "rip and tear" line is from a Doom comic book from the 90's. It was weird. It became a running gag and eventual meme in the Doom community. It honestly feels a bit weird with Doom Eternal flat out taking the two most famous lines from the comic. "Rip and tear" obviously, and "big guts, huge guts".
@@bryandacote8109 Yeah learn’t about that recently, kind of funny that Ahoy would reference a meme of something that was originally from the Doom community, brought to life by an obscure comic during the 90s, only for it to become official!
I disagree completely. Just 5 minutes into original Doom, and you can see that they consolized and generally butchered the whole basic idea and appeal of Doom. No, it was NOT running in the middle of demon packs and "rip & tearing" them apart.
The basic premise of DOOM is NOT running at 60mph mowing down hellspawn? That's exactly what DOOM was and always has been about: raw action and carnage.
I just bought a PC taking into consideration its ability to run DooM Eternal ;-) My previous gaming PC was something I put together specifically for DooM 3. I don't think it's fair to compare the two. It's like comparing a documentary to reality TV. They can both be enjoyable but on completely different levels appealing to different things.
"Perhaps FPS of the future will take heed, and perhaps, the franchise will see a return to glory." I can't express how glad I am that both of these statements are true nowadays. DOOM is back in its golden days, and even if not all modern FPS are as fast-paced as it is, the absolute craze for generic modern military shooters has mostly died down, fortunately. Since this video came out, masterpieces like Ion Fury, DOOM Eternal, Dusk, Amid Evil, Prodeus, Ultrakill, Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin, and HROT have come out.

------------------------------------------------------------ THE STORY SO FAR ------------------------------------------------------------
You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action.
Such a bad ass series from the first words.
What I always liked about that is that it's written in 2nd person. It's not BJ Blazkowitz, it's not Commander Keen/Billy Blaze, it's *YOU* .
"It's pathetic!"-Burke in Aliens
There is so much more to say here that ties into timeless human plights as hinted by this small initial story given for the first game; societal and corporate hubris, a general lack of kindness and respect for people on a societal wide scale, technological dissonance, societal homogenization, and so many eschatological ideas.

Total biscuits voice sounds like he's always going to be disappointed but with a higher pitch, the narrator for ahoy sounds like a titanium bearded version of cpt. price from cod4.
Second to Morgan Freeman
I think this guy sounds like he's from Kent or round that area
There needs to be a big red button (locked behind a plastic cage) that can provide on-demand replays of his read of "This...is my *Boomstick* "
"You'll have to rely on your bare fists.."
Video shows Doomguy's fist wearing a spiked knuckle duster.
Yeah, a mistake, knuckle duster, and no gloves. Fixed in brutal doom, fortunately
@Gang Weed but why
@Gang Weed why use a knuckle duster?
@Gang Weed but why are the marines issued with a knuckle duster?
@Gang Weed im done with you
"Punching demons is a dangerous proposition".. proceeds to punch demons to death without any problems
Pulse Only professionals should punch demons
Nothing like going Tyson on a Cybie and coming out unscathed.
Fantastic retrospective. It just sucks that this was made before Doom (2016) & Doom Eternal came out.
I REALLYYYYYYY hope Ahoy makes an addendum to this video and gives those 2 games (and any mods of note) the praise they deserve, one day.
Till then, this is still a fantastic video.
Those games aren’t nearly as fun.
Literally who even plays them anymore. Meanwhile OG Doom has the most vibrant community by far, churning out full custom wads of unbelievable quality and sophistication.
This is how you do videos, not with childish screams whenever something happens in game. Quality over quantity.
DOMO ! ARRGGHH ! ... well said.
+Definitely Xerberus too bad that the moneys says otherwise. It's so sad that people can spam childish content wich requires no talents and make loads of money while Ahoy, a guy spending an unbelieveble amount of time on videos basically get no money from it.
+Kevin Uchiha If it required no talent everyone would be millionaires on youtube.
+Definitely Xerberus If "daddy Quantity" dicked a "mommy Quality" , this video is an outcome of all that.
I don't think it's fair to compare the two. It's like comparing a documentary to reality TV. They can both be enjoyable but on completely different levels appealing to different things.
I remember at Westinghouse we found that about 20% of the traffic on the Starlan network was Doom IPX traffic.
So we upgraded to Ethernet. Oh yeah!
This was the best episode of "How It Works" I've ever seen.
How do they do it?
oh shit, you are right... he sounds exactly like the How It's Made guy!
"Perhaps FPS of the future will take heed, and perhaps, the franchise will see a return to glory."
I can't express how glad I am that both of these statements are true nowadays.
"2 decades, and it's still kicking ass." So true.
4:57 I get the impression that Tom Cruise’s shit-eatin’ grin inspired the doom guy’s smile when he gets an awesome weapon.
thanks to the Doom reboot, i now know 3 things:
1. Even hell has standards, the lost souls are despised by them
2. Pinky has to fight both his brothers AND the Doom Slayer because he's a delicacy among demons
3. Pinatas- i mean, cacodemons are living proof that if meatballs were sentient, they'd hate you
edit: 425 likes and growing? if only i could get that many subs
holy shit 197 likes? thanks guys, i'm touched
LOL THE CACODEMON PART LOL
@@supanerd5558 you're welcome
@@AllGamingStarred Thanks.
@@supanerd5558 tbh, i don't like the 2016 version if only because it is way too short and ditches the horror aspect for yet another DOOM II style romp (getting tired of it tbh, Doom 3 was more robust) which ruins it for me. not enough horror, less scares and arguably worse campaign. subjective, but i hate it now, it was fun back then and in some ways still is but i prefer Doom 3.
I remember my dad telling me stories of how he and his brothers were obsessed with this game's multiplayer. Now, it's my favorite FPS series by far.
Incredible voice, and nice word choices that makes narration far more beautiful. Perfect.
50 minutes of Doom? HELL YES! Cannot wait to watch :-D love from your minecrafting doomguy
+xisumavoid Didnt expect to see you here :D
+xisumavoid Better than split parts!
I said the same thing when I saw it
+jens visti krogh Really? :-P
+xisumavoid i'm watching watching your old Doom II LP now, your voice sounds so different!
I wish the man behind Ahoy had more time on his hands, because these are the most finely done, informative and ridiculously comprehensive videos on RUclips. Keep them coming man, you are top notch.
History Channel:
We made an iconic documental about video games industry, including ID Software tittles
Stuart:
Hold my plasma rifle...
@ReelVonic you mean iD sOfTwARE right? you dummy!
Apparently this channel can run doom.
But can it run Crysis?
Everything nowadays can. And it is a very good thing.
And I am here waiting for Doom: Eternal's release.
Time flies doesnt it?
Eh, maybe...
The wait was worth it
And I am here playing the game
Time flies doesn't it?
2024, The Dark Ages is slated for release next year...
Bro, your voice makes this video twice as good.
ikr he could narrate documentaries for bbc
+GO DUCK YOUR SELF LOL
“A more in depth story” as commander keen pogos away kills me
Probably the most in-depth review of Doom I've ever seen, let alone the whole franchise 🤘🏻👍👍
@Anti gacha Master you are cringe for having a maximillianmus profile picture in 2019
This dude is such a high level producer. Such good content
I can't wait for the quake video.... "how the ability to look up and down changed everything. Also: Jump.... how important was it?"
900bot
No kidding? What game did it before quake?
CraftKitty
I can understand that, the original quake hasn't aged well at all.
the original System Shock had up / down look, and I think it came out a couple years before Quake.
+morcova in Hexen you could look up and down. its another doomengine game. i highly recommend it. i love it even more than doom 1
+CraftKitty Quake 1 is King. Quake Live/Q3A is more well rounded, but Quake1 is faster and less forgiving. There's a reason people made the Challenge Pro Mod Arena Quake 3 mods, modelled after Quake1/QuakeWorlds physics and mechanics.
8 years, and still absolutely brilliant.
23:19 I love how you and the demons gang up on the Mastermind
"What did DOOM do?" All of it.
Doom did fps
You can’t get PTSD if you are the traumatic event!
Doomguy does suffer from ptsd, he just does good job of hiding it. Because when you're fighting the hordes of hell the last thing you'd want them to see is emotional weakness . . . that and the bottom of your boot.
God I remember being about 6 years old playing Doom and my parents/grandparents were always concerned about me playing it because of how violent it was. I'm 30 years old now and I still enjoy firing up Doom on the odd occasion. The game is absolutely timeless.
You sir, are an exceptional hihg quality youtuber.
"hihg quality"
“hihg”
""
Sid high quality, I agree
are you hihg?
did anyone else still startle at the war cry of the baron of hell even though you were expecting it aswell as heard it dozens of times?
It always scare the crap outta me!
Not so much startled, as frozen in dread by that guttural sound lodged forever into my reptilian brain.
After the introduction of slaughter maps, not anymore. Barons are great infighting fodder no matter what you set them up against.
Scariest noise for me is still the Cyberdemons wake noise and him walking around with the "KA-CHUNK" getting closer and closer. Nightmare fuel for my 2 year old mind back in 95. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to have me playing doom 2 with my mom, but it's one of my best memories now.
Forgot I wasn't playing for a second there. I have a little bit of PTSD when it comes to a Baron of Hell scream, especially after playing Sigil.
This is corporate-level-documentary. Production quality high enough to be shown on public broadcasting. Discovery Channel, eat your hearth out. Also, Ahoy is very eloquent
Oh the nostalgia!! I taught my kids to play Doom! It was the first game in which I was able to prove to myself that the AIs had lives of their own when they were off-screen. I was about 58 year old. The feeling of awe lasted for days. I'm 79 now. Can't live without gaming. My wife either.
