She was dishonest!! Not to tell the up-and-coming students or present students that she was going to put up tuition fees.!! She wanted their votes ,and unfortunately the students got sucked in.. Many of the students may now not be able to continue with their course. What a waste of money. Just like labour a complete waste of time.
I hope she’s proud of herself. She will put many students in a lot of debt for years to come.

I believe the fees only apply to new students going forward - not those already in univeristy.
But yes, this is an issue. University loans are already a scam for young people who are not advised on the financial situation of university loans.
17/18 year olds given a 300 page document to sign that would require both a finance degree and a law degree to fully understand and told they sign or don't go to university is a huge issue. Not accurately educated on the outcomes of university or the financial implications.

They all pulled the ladder up behind themselves. My sister paid £3k per year in tuition and got something like a £3k bursary too in addition to loans etc.
When I did it in 2012, it jumped to £9000 and they scrapped the bursary.
As a result, I'd have an extra £30,000 of debt straight off the bat. As a result, she could pay hers off, whereas i'm not going to bother ever trying to do so.

"fees have not kept pace with inflation, leaving the sector struggling..."
Tuition fees tripled in 2012 from £3K to £9K, shouldn't that be enough for universities to handle inflation?

So 'reform' means charge students more tuition, not to increase productivity, efficiency or teaching quality.
It's like a car manufacturer saying they want to reform a highly malfunctioning
inefficient car then hiking up prices and justifying it as reformation.

I am still paying off my student loan nearly 20 years after graduating. I have to say this pseudo anger about this rise is pathetic. I don't agree with tuition fees but it is the system we have now. A student borrows thousands upon thousands. An extra 200 plus quid a year will be paid off in 2 months at an average salary so 6 months overall. It is a drop in the ocean. Simmer down everyone. Bring back maintenance grants!!

Your course was £3k a year right? It's now £9.5k a year, for what is probably the exact same course and content.
I pay £545 *every month* in student fees. As well as the price being 3x as expensive the real kicker is that interest is added to the debt every month (~6.5% I think). For most people, the interest is about the same as their salary reduction so in essence it's an additional lifetime tax of 9% added on top of income tax and national insurance

Tuition fees are going up less than 3%, which is the first increase in 8 years. For the Tories to call this an attack on students is ludicrous. Fees would have to be nearer £13K to make up for inflation. Labour are just trying to stabilise Universities, which are in danger of going bust. The Tories left this mess!

If fees are not substantially increased or the system is reformed, the country will increasingly rely on international students to fund higher education. The numbers could double. So it’s a case of picking one…increase fees substantially and make universities self sustaining or relax the rules to let money come in through international students. The reform and other right wing conservatives will criticise ‘legal’ immigration numbers because the system is by design incentivising more immigration.

British academic now working for a US university. I’m afraid if anything this tuition increase is far too small. If UK students want universities to survive long enough for them to actually attend, they need to prepare for even larger tuition increases. The coalition government was extremely stupid not to link tuition to inflation. Everyone is now paying the price.

    • @jabbahamma6100
      @jabbahamma6100 Месяц назад

At the time the ConDems tripled tuition fees in 2011, had they linked it to inflation at that time, tuition fees would have been £4310 per year today - half of the current tuition fees (Source: BoE), so your point doesn’t hold water. Many universities are greedy and wasteful. They pay their chancellors and executives bloated sums of money.
