Paramedic pioneers look back on 50 years

- 50 years ago, visionaries had an idea to bring hospitals to the field by training firefighters to deliver life-saving care. L.A. County created the first paramedic training program in the nation. At a reception honoring a half-century of Emergency Medical Services, those first pioneers found camaraderie has survived the decades.
I continue to watch Emergency on reruns as it’s better than 90% what’s on TV now. Thank you all EMTs!

It far exceeds ER and all the Chicago shows, that's for sure; I liked how this show handled medical emergencies at Rampart (they didn't use that distracting alarm that Chicago Med and modern hospital shows used; when there was an emergency, they just went to work and handled it).
I remember watching EMERGENCY as a kid and after I got out of the Navy in 1985 I went to EMT school at Daniel Freeman Hospital and I later worked for Goodhew Ambulance Service and saw first hand what was going to be my future, I became a PARAMEDIC in 1988 and a year and a half later I became a PARAMEDIC for LACOFD on various Squads but that 10 year lil boy in still got excited everytime I drove into HARBOR GENERAL HOSPITAL AND I ALWAYS SAID "I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M DOING THIS!!!!! " THANK YOU TO THOSE THAT CAME BEFORE ME AND TO THOSE THAT CAME AFTER ME !!!!
I was in L.A. a month ago, we went and visit the fireman museum in Bellflower, then Station 127 aka station 51 in Carson, we want to go to visit Harbor G H, unfortunately the day we arrive everything start to shutting down due to Covid-19, we are home now somewhere in Oregon ,we will return and visit the Hospital, Buford be safe and take care of yourself .

I became a firefighter/Paramedic because of Emergency. Then Captain and now 2 sons who are FF/PM.
I had the great honor to visit the fireman museum, great experience I saw the famous squad 51 the engine 51 and we had a tour from a nice retired Fireman, what a great day
As cliche as this sounds, Emergency! is the reason I’ve been a volunteer firefighter fo 36 years. Fifty five years old, still packing-up and going in. That show was a blessing for emergency services in the US. Stay safe my brothers and sisters...
Boy, does that take me back. I was in the pilot EMT/Paramedic program in San Diego county foothills fire dept.
EMERGENCY/ ADAM12 were my favorite shows ever! They were so exciting for the time and I adored the characters! They feel like family💙💙💙

In the very first episode of Emergency, Kent McCord and Martin Milner had guest spots as Reed and Malloy. But then in Season 3 I think, the Station was watching Adam 12.
Great stuff. There was an already established paramedic program in the Eastern United States. But it took the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s support of a made for T.V. Movie Of The Week and a subsequent one hour drama every Saturday night highlighting the L.A. Paramedics for the word “Paramedic” to become a known commodity around the world.
Thank God for Dr. Hahn. I too became a firefighter because of the show Emergency.
The show Emergency is the reason I became a volunteer firefighter. I have the entire series on DVD.

@@Joe-rw1bb the show Emergency was very popular with kids. When they grew up. They want to be police officer, firefighter, nurse, doctor, or surgeon.
Jack Webb produced the show and had carte blanche with the city and county of Los Angeles to do that classic series.
I loved that show. I saw both of the.lead paramedics at a State firefighter convention as a kid. I spent over 20 years as a fireman and 16 years as EMT.
I just learned about the show bc of my instructor. It didn’t showed up on my radar but I watch other 1st responder shows

My mom and dad met at Georgia Street Receiving Hospital in downtown LA. My dad was an "ambulance attendant" long before there were EMT's and Paramedics. My mom was an RN, spent 38 years working for the City of Los Angeles mainly at Lincoln Height's Receiving Hospital but also worked at Hollywood Receiving Hospital and Van Nuys Jail. She later worked in Medical Services Admin at Central Receiving Hospital which was often shown on Dragnet, Adam-12 and Emergency! My brother and I were both in Law Enforcement and I later became an EMT. Mom used to work with Joseph Wambaugh and told stories about how he was always watching everything that was going on and taking notes that would later become the plots for his books and movies. Mom was also on duty when Robert F Kennedy was brought into Central Receiving Hospital after he had been shot at the Ambassador Hotel. Because of the seriousness of his wounds they quickly shipped him across the street to the Good Samaritan Hospital. It's amazing to look back at how my family was right in the middle of the beginning of emergency medical services. I give a hats off and a thank you to all of you who have played a role in protecting and saving lives and property.

I remember coming home from school in the 70's doing my homework and all, I ever watched was Roy and Johnnie. They're the reason why, I became a Paramedic. It is and was the coolest job ever for me. I retired from the NYC Fire Dept several years after 911. I was diagnosed with several 911 releated conditions years later. I would have been a Captain by now. DAMN, I MISS the JOB.

The show EMERGENCY made both myself and my best friend/brother Tim want to become paramedics in L.A. County when we were in elementary school. When we graduated high school, he went in one direction, I wanted to start EMS training. Without Tim, I just didn't have the heart anymore. Became a deputy sheriff instead; he became a cook. 😔 We'd have been great together! Could've saved many lives. I always regretted our choices.
How did you save olives as a deputy sheriff?
I was born in Van Nuys, and grew up in Altadena and South Pasadena during the 60-70's. RA-3 was our first ALS unit in South Pasadena. The city provided the unit, and paramedics from the Pasadena Fire Department staffed the unit. The show Emergency was huge then. I became a US Army Paramedic for 14 years. Kudos to current and past First-Responders. All of you are my role models. At 60, I still, and will always have many memories of my time in the field. Take care everyone! KMG365.

Excellent! Glad to see Carol Bebout, Dr. Ron Stewart, and Gary Davis! There are fewer members left of the six firefighters who helped start the program at Harbor General. I was nuts about "Emergency!" when it ran on NBC. I lived in a community where we had no paramedics and our fire department was whomever was on duty at the gas station housing the fire engines. I'm proud of the work they did in bringing emergency care to the streets and saving countless lives.
As EMS is coming up on 51, I'm about to celebrate my first save 46years ago in May. In May 1974 I was a 11 year and 11 month old Boy Scout who was a big fan of EMERGENCY and Adam 12. My Grandfather who raised.e had a Heart attack. My Grandmother told me to look up a Ambulance Company in the phone book. I told her about this new thing threw the Fire Department called EMS. So I called the Fire Department. Boy Scout First Aid at the time was to keep the person calm, which I did.
Later we were told that if I had called a BLS Ambulance my grandfather would have died. About 8 year's later I got a job with a private Ambulance Company. Company policy was still load and go. After working there I eventually got into Volunteer Firefighting, then Private EMS I was going to go for my EMT - P but had to drop out during EMT-I training because of transportation problems, the school was 25 miles from work. I still have the opportunity to treat a patient now and then.

I became an EMT 2 years ago and it makes me smile knowing how far we have come and how far we will continue to go much love and respect for the men and women of the fire and ems services who came before us
The phone app that notifies me that I have an EMS call does so by playing the Squad 51 tones from Emergency! It's a tip of the hat to those who first got me interested in EMS and firefighting.

I set it as my alarm to get me up in the mornings; I was a volunteer fireman for twenty-five years.
I liked how they showed the photo of the 1st and 2nd graduates of the pioneer paramedic class and seeing Bob Bellevue who was a paramedic consultant on Emergency! Unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago but retired as a battalion chief. I liked him in the one episode he appeared in of Emergency. I wish they had talked to Kevin Tighe since he was there.
Living in L.A. during the original airring of "EMERGENCY" later prompted me to become a F/ F- Medic & Flight Medic ,after I initially worked as a LEO ( military down to local level). Thx L.A. County!!
I love watching the show Emergency! And I remember watching it as a kid. I am fortunate to watch the reruns on fetv.
If you look at the radio at 0:30 you will see that is autographed my Randolf Mantooth, Johnny Gage on the show.
I was inspired by Emergency, and Dennis Smith to get into the fire service, and luckily my dept. was the third fire dept. in the US to have paramedics. I was trained by some of those early pioneers. Their first mobile cardiac care vehicle was and RV, and the monitor/defibrillator was the size of a small fridge.
LOVED "Report From Engine Company 82!" Have read the book a dozen or more times!

Hell, I loved those books. I even bought a New Yorker leather helmet when I first became a volunteer fireman in 1978. It served me well. It's still on my wall to this day.
I was a firefighter paramedic in suburban Chicago from spring 1986 till end of July 2017 when I retired due too bad back and bad hips from an on duty crash
Great video. The funny thing is that the U.S, or indeed L.A. was quickly "bypassed" by Australia and the UK with Paramedical training. America still had to radio for a doctors instructions and approval for drugs in most cases, Australia was trained to a standard where they could make decisions themselves with druds and advanced treatment, without having to "waste time" contacting a hospital or doctor in a serious emergency. This is not a criticism of America, it was just the way it was. America had a lot of resistance to the paramedic program as did Australia, but to a lesser extent though.. Australia, with the support of most emergency physicians, did not have resistance on the same scale as the U.S.and sorted out issues very quickly. Sydney and Melbourne were for many years acclaimed as the best ambulance services in the world. They are still among the best today, but today, all the developed world is basically on par, America, U.K and Europe in general. The world can, however, thank the U.S. for putting the Paramedic system on the map.
Thank God for the late Jim Page for allowing the late Robert Cinader to ride along and observe the Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedic program which became Emergency. The show also help set national standards for paramedic programs around the country along with helping poor counties and cities in developing EMT programs (episode Welcome to Santa Rosa County) and for fire engines to carry paramedic equipment (episode Equipment directed by Kevin Tighe).
Too bad we couldn't have seen more of Randolph Mantooth (John Gage). He (and the TV show "Emergency") was the reason I became a paramedic.
All talk no mention of the 2 famous guys who played in Emergency as Paramedics in Station 51 like Kevin Tighe or Randolph Mantooth.
Emergency was to first responders what adam-12 was to policemen.
And for Dragnet with the LAPD.

we're used to the idea now but this was a RADICAL concept to say the least... i wonder how long it took the public to latch onto the idea of a fireman giving medical aid like a doctor
I remember thinking how cool the idea was. I was about 7 when Wedsworth- Townsend Act was signed by Gov. Reagan. When my hometown announced they would be getting into EMS, I thought WOW! When they started they went with the EMS Ambulance model. I thought, What are the Ambulance Drivers going to do. Well it turns out that the industry survived and improved.
When I first worked in the industry I talked with a City FF/ EMT-Paramedic who said that they should be in Squads and that we should be doing the transport.
There are advantages to the FD Squad model. If the Patient doesn't need ALS or ACLS Care, a BLS unit can handle it. But Private EMS Ambulance offer not only BLS, but ALS, ACLS (Paramedic), MICU AND Specialty MICU.
One sad thing about changes in Ambulance Service since the EMERGENCY days is that the converted Station Wagons (especially Cadillacs) have been phased out. They gave a much easier ride than a converted 1½ ton truck.

Bobby Sherman, who was a teen heart throb in the 70's along with Davy Jones and David Cassidy, quit show biz to become a paramedic after appearing on Emergency as a doctor. He retired from LAPD as a Captain and spend his career as the EMT training officer at the Police Academy.
You should have taken this documentary to New Haven Ct where EMS really was taken to the next level..

Kevin Tighe is well thought of, but the less Mantooth is mentioned, the better most of us in EMS like it. He's been thrown out of more EMS events than anybody else I know, because he was such an embarrassment to those of us who did it for real..

Nobody got onto EMS in the 1970's because of Johnny Gage. They got into it IN SPITE of Johnny Gage, and the bad image he gave to EMS.

Am really worried for everyone effect by the virus it’s been a big deal on Facebook hoping Randolph Mantooth is ok he was supposed to travel and do other events sadly it isn’t happening not only that Kevin a risk to hopefully Randolph ok am prying we’re so close to each other at the purple rose and am just freaking out over the virus and been bullied for it

Until the creation of this program the fact was that a critically wounded soldier on the battlefield had a higher chance of survival than someone involved in a minor traffic accident at home.
Kenneth Hahn (along with Rosalind Wyman) was responsible for bringing Major League baseball to the West Coast when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles after the 1957 season.

Actually the first paramedic program started in Miami Florida.
The first Paramedic program in the nation was actually when the University of Maryland "Shock-Trauma" center trained people to ride in Maryland State Police helicopters, and privide Advanced Life Support throughout the state. As the doctors who pioneered it were recruited and hired by hospitals in the rest of the country, they built similar programs in those states..
@@thomasjsanford9991 You're right. Also, Jack Webb asked the City of Los Angeles to film about their EMS program and was turned down. The late Battalion Chief Jim Page asked Robert Cinader, producer to ride on medical calls with the County Fire Department and Emergency was born. William Conrad (Cannon) portrayed Dr. R. Adams Cowley, head of Shock Trauma, in a movie.
