    Many of the generals from both sides were able to be given a proper burial, especially if returned to their home town. Most of the soldiers killed were buried where they died.

    The Civil War was because of slavery, not over it. Those who blame the South for slavery, have not read the United States Constitution. No need to bring Lee and Grant into the slavery arguments. They were simply instruments of war, not the politicians who created it. The institution of slavery, as permitted by Article 1 and Article 4 is what damn near tore this country apart. I stand of awe of Northern and Southern soldiers of that time period. Your video was very moving. Well done Sir!!!

      There is no such thing as Article 1 Article 4 in the Constitution and nothing that prevented slavery at the time of the War Between the States. There was the 3/5ths clause stating that 3/5tha of all persons shall be utilized to determined representation in the House of Representatives. If course today's revisisioninsts like to State that slaves were only coy red as 3/5ths of a person. It's not what the Constitution said.

Every year I go to their graves, and ask myself what would have become of them if they survived. • @supermanbhc

    It is a very complicated issue or we wouldn't be arguing today about which side was right or wrong. One cannot compare that time period to this time period. There were racist's on both sides during that time, Abraham Lincoln, William Sherman, and Ulysses Grant to name a few. Therefore, one must look at what was lawful and unlawful during that time period. Men who did not own slaves wouldn't have fought for slavery no more than men who owned slaves (Grant) would have fought to free the slaves.

    • @swirvinbirds1971
      @swirvinbirds1971 4 года назад +1

      That is frankly white washing the issue. There is no doubt racists were thick on both side. America has always been extremely racist especially back then. The one big difference is that this flat out ignores the large amount of abolitionists in the North and ignores the fact the South seceded over Southern fears that the abolitionists in the North were going to end their institution of slavery.
      Lincoln fought to preserve the Union. The South seceded to preserve their institution of slavery. End of story. Any confusion is due to the lost cause movement and their attempt to white wash Confederate history. Even confederate soldiers knew they were fighting and dying for the rich plantation owners.

      This doesn't change the fact that your grandpappy fought for Southern aristocrats and their desire to preserve their way of life which was that of institutional slavery.
      Soldiers fought for all sorts of reasons and it was mostly loyalty to ones state... And it just so happened their state seceded and fought to preserve thier institution of slavery and created a new constitution with direct reference to that fact.
      No one blames the soldier. The leaders and generals are to blame. Why do you excuse the Confederacy and it's leaders for their actions?
      Today we fight for oil. Back then your ancestors fought to keep a people in bondage. It's just the simple truth of the matter.

      @@swirvinbirds1971 1. You are right. Grant was poor that time and he did not sell his only slave for money, he freed him! Both Lincoln and Grant married a southern girls whose families were slave owners, but neither Lincoln nor Grant had not slaves when the Civil War started. However (VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW!) Stephen Douglas Lincoln's election counterpart from the Northern Democratic party had plantation with slaves in Mississippi. His first wife had plantation and slaves! It is right he did not live in Mississippi he lived in Illinois and his plantation was organized with plantation manager, but he was financialy in the Southern economy!
      2. Interesting the most generals died in battle or after the battle in their wound, but the most dead soldiers (+civilians) died in contaginouse illnesses from viruses, bacteria, fungi or monocells as Malaria. The longer Civil War independently from the battles were deadly. The direct and indirect death was about 600 000 people but the after the died wounded veterans and higher violance coused death so the Civil War dead people counted about 750 000 untill 1870. It might be better, if the Civil War ended after Vicksburg and Gettysburg soon. Fewer dead people could have been! The unionist army started to use the modern arms in higher % only at the end of 1863........
      3. The soldiers who fought for Confederacy had some couses. Except for the slave owners:
      There were whose was familiar connection with slave owner families and they were not Lincoln or Grant.
      Next group people were who would not have liked such future that the slaves became same social group as they were as poor southern whites.
      There were who wanted to became slave owners........not general Grant.
      So the state rights were to maintain the slavery system and the pure state rights were a very minority opinion only after 1870 became self explanation for the confederacy supporters.
      Interesting the pro unionist areas where the Confederacy idea was not too popular. Very few areas were the slave population % were high.
      East Tennessee, West part of Tennessee river counties, Some counties in North Texas, West part of North Carolina, Northern Alabama, Northern Georgia, West Virginia, New Bern city in North Carolina and North West Arkansas. (smaller regions with unionists were in Florida, Mississippi and Lousiana), only South Carolina's white population were almost totaly beside Confederacy in every county! Very few counties were the slave population were high % and the majority of the county white people were unionists.
      I repeate again The shorter Civil War could gave MORE LIVING PEOPLE for the Southern part pf the USA and the Northern part of USA. I am very sorry for the all victims in the Civil War.

    The institution of slavery as allowed in the Constitution during that time period, was a source of conflict and is what caused secession. Yes, the Union invading the C.S.A. is what forced the Confederates hand. As mentioned in the declarations of secession from Georgia, S. Carolina and Texeas, secession was over slavery. I agree with you that the war was over the right to secede. From a Constitutional point of view, I agree with the Souths position. But, slavery began the sequence of events

Just saying something was so doesn't make it so you need to show proof. I am not saying that its impossible for old abraham al but suspended the rule of law,but when you assert something not supported by evidence its nothing but here say. I commend your devotion to history but if you focus on just one side you end up with a biased view. The civil war was a very complex issue and I doubt that a single issue caused the war and the thought that a president with well documented racist views would start a war to free the slaves is ludicrous. I believe the war was about economic growth and the northern political and financial class wanted a subdued south and a larger federal government with more control and that they used slavery as an excuse for a war,maneuvering the south into fighting. I think it's a shame that the brave men who fought for the south are being treated to the woke epidemic such are the times. Slavery is the very worst expression of racism and indifference and despite what the true motives of the north were ending slavery was a good thing morally and practically it's just sad that hundreds of thousands of young men had to die in a war for it to happen regardless of motives.

    • @michaelbee2165
      @michaelbee2165 3 года назад

      The Constitution didn't 'allow' slavery. The Constitution resolved differences over what constituted Federal government powers and what constituted State government powers. The States had no interest whatsoever in giving up their soveriegn powers as independent states after their victory in the Revolutionary War. They also understood there were security benefits to agreeing to a Union of the 13 Colonies as as one nation. So this nation agreed to a system whereby the Federal government would have very limited powers such as raising those funds necessary "for the common defense." There was more to it that that. But any powers not specifically assigned to the Federal government were reserved to the States. This is the fact that today's internet alleged history cowboys refuse to recognize. After the War Between the States the Constitution subverted. Of course today, the Constitution is a noble piece of paper under glass at the National Archives.

    By the way, as research has gone along, many sites have been found. As these fallen technically fought for this country, they are entitled to a gravestone paid for by the government. This was never a problem before. But the previous presidential administration changed their rules and made it very difficult. Since a lot of these sites include those that fought for the CSA, they now require, or required (hopefully that changes) a family member or an individual appointed by law to make the request for a gravestone for a newly found site of a fallen soldier.

      If only he had adhered to what he stated in the 1840s about tyranny and the responsibility of men. I think he was an honorable man. I think he was a Christian man. I just don't think he fully appreciated the Constitution and the fact that this country still mostly held allegiance to one's State rather than the Union. It wasn't even 100 years since it took a lot of 'horse trading' to get the 13 Colonies on board with the Declaration of Independence. Less still when it was necessary to get delegates to agree to the Constitution. Those Constitutional Conventions ate what led to the 'Federalist' system of governance we have today. It was agreed the Central Federal government would have certain limited powers, the the State's would reserve certain rights not delegated to the Federal government. By the time of the War Between the States it was clear that States' rights had been eroded substantially.

    A government , army , way of life defeated 150 years ago , and some still feel threatened. Get over yourselves and be about the business of 21 century life in America. Allow the Confederate and Union dead to rest in peace, they have earned it !

    • @michaelbee2165

      They've earned far more than we ever could! Agreed! Our ancestors will NOT be ignored as the PC grave destroyers would like. Those terms are unacceptable. Honorable men settled this in the years after the war until circa 1920. The nation then United. Some communist thugs decided to try to crap on the valor of some courageous Americans a couple years ago. Nope, not gonna happen. Your point is well taken. Take it up with them.

    We, as Americans, can not forget, that these men turned their backs on the United States, took up arms against her, and created an alternative constitution that said it will never be illegal to own other human beings. After complete defeat, and almost total destruction, the United States allowed the followers of these men to return to the US if they behaved themselves, and accept the laws of the United States. Please do not make us regret that. If the confederacy would have fought against a less than noble nation, like Communist China, or the Soviet Union, all the people of the "South" may have been eliminated, and the ground salted. There may have been no talk of the "South", or any confederacy, in our history.

      Nonsense from someone who hopefully will be forgotten. The north did all they could to kill and destroy. About all they didn't do was salt the Earth and I'm surprised they didn't. Your hate is noted but is not reciprocated, because I hated you before you ever thought of it. One thing I always remember is my hatred for the vile and disgusting Yankee race and all that it stands for.

    Bee "there stands jackson like a stone wall" some historians (me among them) believe it was said as an insult since he refused to come to Bee's aid during the battle. The victors would have us believe it was NOT the bill of rights that took the confederacy into the war. I think some of us know it was denial of rights that caused the civil war. If those rights needed adjustments the founders gave us a way of doing it. (slavery amendment)

    • @michaelbee2165
      @michaelbee2165 3 года назад

      You conveniently left out the part where Bee told his men to ""RALLY behind the Virginians." Meaning Jackson, and there they held Henry Hill on the left flank of General Joseph Johnston's Confederate Army of the Shenandoah. Despite the loses of Gen Bee and Bartow later. Together they drove the Union troops back down the hill, into disarray and fleeing toward Washington DC. Nice try. Epic fail.

      The so called 'slavery amendment' came in the form of the 13th amendment in 1864 and the 14th amendment in 1868. Neither were enacted by the Founders. They were dead. By definition then secession had nothing to do with any Constitutional clause against slavery. 🙄
