Our German shepherd dog loved to eat grapes. She only had them occasionally whenever they were ripe in our garden. She loved the pears from the pear tree, too and also cracked the walnuts open to eat. She lived until the age of 14, was euthanised after her intestines got tangled up repeatedly. Another one of our German shepherds decided once to eat the remains of the mush we used to make grape juice. The remains had been sitting in a bucket in the sun on our patio for several hours before the dog decided to eat quite a lot of it. Of course, with the sun and the oxygen, it had started to ferment and we had a very drunk dog sleeping off her inebriated state. She did not even care about the mailman. She was fine afterwards, though.

We were so lucky that my childhood Golden seemed to be one of the immune ones, because grapes were one of her favorite treats before I went to vet tech school and found out that they tended to be poisonous for dogs. Of course, even if she had no immediate consequences for years of a grape here and there, she did have some form of metastisized liver or kidney cancer at age twelve. No telling if her diet added to that.

Thanks, it's a really useful and informative video, and I bet you saved many pets by uploading it!
The only issue is, those viewers that are not from the US likely use metric system, and it would be really nice if you also told us the numbers in grams or milligrams, even if we shouldn't rely on them.
    (If someone is curious, it's 85 g and 14.5 g, respectively)

I appreciate this video and the knowledge to keep my canine family member the "F" against away grapes and raisins.

If you have kids be aware that most playdough recipes involve cream of tartar (i.e. tartaric acid) so if the dog/cat gets into the kid's playdough it's also time to visit the vet for a checkup.

Our fox terrier learned to open zippers and we forgot to tell my parents when they came to visit. My mom had snacks in her bag, including an entire bag of raisins. He opened the zipper on her bag, and I still cannot believe he didn't join in, but our other dog and my parents' dog were caught scarfing them down while he watched them looking really proud. If you've ever met a fox terrier, you know the look. Absolutely no reaction. My other dog is 22 lbs and my parents' was about 35lbs. They def ate more than the toxic dose each. 😅 I'm glad the sft didn't eat any bc the ways things have gone for him, he WOULD react. He's cost us more than any dog I've ever had. Maybe even more than all of them put together. Let's see... He eats mulch on the regular. He ate so many acorns one time he got scarily ill, like tremors that were almost like seizures. He ate a squeaker and had to have surgery. I don't even know how many times he's gotten sick from eaching chocolate (I have 4 kids. Hasn't happened since the last time when I made the kids clean up all the puke and diarrhea, though!) When he first learned to open zippers he got into my bag and ate a pack of gum (thankfully not xylitol!) AND chewed up my inhaler and had to spend a couple days in the hospital on meds to slow his heart down. This was all in the first 2 years after we adopted him at a year old. And he's been a good boy ever since I took out pet insurance on him, of course. 😂 Oh wait, no, they did pay for an acute gastritis claim after he found a roadkill deer and ate god knows how much deer hair. Good lord, was he having a good time running around it ripping out hair though. It was so funny I kinda let him do it a little longer than I should have, but I didn't realize he was freaking EATING the hair. Smartest dog I've ever met, so much trouble. Good thing he's also super sweet and entertaining, too. 😂

They just love him at the vet. We go to a rather large practice with 6 vets and all the techs and office staff, and anytime we go to pick up the other dog's Apoquel, they ask how he's doing and if he's gotten into anything lately. They call him that naughty boy and one of the vets said there'd be fistfights over both our dogs if something ever happened that they needed a new home. 😂❤❤❤ Our other dog was basically feral when we adopted her. She's come a long way. Terrified of everything, but still looks like a puppy and is super smart, so so sweet, and knows how to do all the cutest tricks. And loves to be on laps. I've had dogs all my life, and I love all dogs, but there are always those really extra special ones. We just happened to somehow get 2 of those at once.❤

Great video, well explained and easy to understand. Thank you for making it 😎👍
Years ago, we shared a punnet of grapes with our gorgeous, elderly JRT×Corgi on a picnic, mainly because we were bewildered that she would actually eat fruit (she was very picky and anything that wasn't meat was not normally an option...😂). We had no idea that we were rolling the dice with her health and wouldn't have done it if we knew then what we know now. Thankfully she wasn't affected but, when we did find out (years later) that they weren't supposed to eat them, our reaction was one of confusion, because we just kept thinking that they never did any harm to our dog on that picnic, or after it. So this explanation is very much appreciated 💕
I will definitely consider that previous experience a "lucky escape" and never roll the dice with a furry family member's health like that again, especially now that the science makes more sense and I see just how lucky we were back then.
Your advice and knowledge is much appreciated, Dr Bozelka 💖👍

I called the poison hot line once for my Gus pup after he ate over a cup of lard out of my deep fryer... they wanted $95!!!
The ER vet told me to call them because they are 2 hours away, it was 11 pm and his regular vet was closed.. needless to say it was a very stressful time.. I ended using peroxide.

Thank you for the chuckle, even though it is a serious subject. I did not know that about Grapes & Raisins, thank you for sharing.

I’m pretty sure my Jack Russel was immune to this. Me and my husband were playing with him and we had a few snack boxes of raisins that we were trying to burn through so we were throwing them at him to see how fast and accurately he could snatch them mid air. (Which was super fast btw) And like the idiot, uneducated pet owner I was, I took of video of this new, entertaining game we had so geniusly come up with and I posted it on Facebook. A few minutes later I got a text message from one of my Facebook friends saying that grapes and raisins were toxic for dogs!
Whoopsies. I stayed up and monitored him overnight though and he didn’t seem phased. He was kinda upset that we stopped playing the game though and wanted to know why we weren’t giving him anymore of those tasty treats. But this dog had a stomach of steel or something because he would literally eat anything dropped on the floor…whether it was edible or not! Never phased him.

@@Dr.BozelkaERVet1 Just wanted to thank you for introducing me to some really fantastic selections to try! Had to search online for the one in this one. It was a bit harder to read, but once I found and read up on it - totally worth it! 😁 You have excellent taste! 👏 😎

And I don’t know what kilometer is…also I get really confused when you guys complain about the blistering heat of something like 30° and I’m like, wtf that’s like below freezing temperatures!
