Making each shot better than the last.

- I don't like to take too many shots of the same scene, but as lighting changes other opportunities present themselves. On this evening shoot at Blea Tarn I continue to see new opportunities as the sun sets and hopefully end the day with the best image.

Wow, great images Steve. The square crop worked a treat. The sheer beauty in those hills is stunning. Always a pleasure watching you work and the photographs you create.
Thanks Simon.
I think the square crop did fit that image very nicely.
It did work well Erich.
really nice shots there steve
I would be hard pressed not to feel rushed by the changing light conditions and wind up with substandard and unremarkable shots. You did a great job of quickly sizing up and judging the potential light as well as composition and getting the most out of what was available.
Thanks Bob. It helped that I’ve been there a few times before and know what works.
Cheers Steve. I'm always happy to see a few shots including the Langdales. The last shot was my favourite but I'd be happy with any of 'em. My proper walking days are over so I'm relying on you to bring these scenes to my armchair. Please keep 'em coming!
Glad you liked it Ray. Thankfully the drive round the valley road wasn’t full of people who didn’t know what to do with such narrow tracks, I’ve been caught out too many times with city drivers 😊
The scene on 1:07 is pretty nice with the pine tree on the right in the foreground balanced with the reflection of the little pine tree in the background, maybe a square crop.
Thanks Michael 🙂
Lovely shots, organic quality . Ever thought of doing an overnighter on the hills in order to get some early sunrise shots ?
I like the idea but don’t have the camping equipment 🙁
Quiet a challenge to Not repeat the Well worn Blea tarn trope 👍😂
Very nice Steve 👍
Loved every single photograph, Steve. Magical scenery expertly captured. Noticed how quietly, you kept the D810 secret. I bought one last month to brother the D800. Brilliant camera.
They are a bit of a bargain now aren’t they 🙂
@@SteveONions They are indeed. It's all this migration to the X system. I was looking for a D850, but for what I do, couldn't justify the price.
Many beautiful shots, and I did like the close-crop mountain shot - thought it had great texture and depth. The final shot was indeed perhaps the best, wonderful colors and lines. Cheers!
Thanks Robert. I didn’t expect them to come out so well but I could have done with more foliage on that last tree to give greater impact.
Thanks for invite to come along on your hike through the beautiful countryside. I enjoyed it and your photos are superb!
Thanks Terence.
Lovely pictures as always.
Thanks Jörg.
Wonderful instructional video, Steve. The subject resulted in several very good photographs and one was the very best.
Thanks Robert. I wasn’t convinced about the last one at the time but I do prefer it now.
Wonderful images, and the last one was magical
Thanks Dann.
Loved the images and the light at this time of day. Was suprised to see you whip out a full frame dslr this time! Cheating on your m4/3 and 35mm film cameras....
Thanks Milo. I’ve got far too many cameras and they all want to get a run out now and again 😊
I enjoyed your colour photos, Steve. Lovely light and brilliant compositions, as always.
Cheers David, the weather was very kind to me.
Enjoyable video, Steve. I really like the thoughts on each composition. Thank you.
Thanks James.
Thoroughly enjoyed the colour images. A nice location for them.
Cheers Trevor.
Great video! Another interesting and useful few minutes of entertaining photo tips.
Cheers Joel.
Good video, I always enjoy your thoughts on composition.
Cheers Bill.
Some absolute corkers there Steve - good to see you shooting colour digital for a change, but I bet you were quietly wishing you could co-shoot with the Bronica and XP2 at the same time?🤣
Actually I was missing the Bronica, and even colour film would have worked better methinks.
Loved this one, and great images as usual.
I do enjoy my 5:4 crops, but with a good subject 1:1 isn't bad either!
Thank you 😊
Lovely shots, can't beat golden hour
That’s Paul.
Hi Steve.
Another very good video, friend.
I'm really only looking for your explanation of composition because I can't find that anywhere else.
What I notice is that you finish faster with a composition in color than one in black and white.
And being a B&W photographer I get this.
Beautiful photos you have taken are really beautiful to look at.
But B&W is something else for me, I have a completely different feeling about it than about color.
Also nice that you use the square format.
You show that this is not just for B&W.
Thank you for the work you put into it as I know these videos have a lot of time and work in them.
Antoine.
I’m somewhat quicker with 35mm film/digital, more careful with medium format. I’ve a mind to revisit colour in 120.
@@SteveONions Please don't leave b&w, my friend.
I totally understand about those cliche shots but many times I take them anyway. Digital is nice for that but I will use a shot on film too. I know that making images for YT is a little different but I photograph mostly for my own enjoyment. That being said though it is hard to expect people to like your work of you aren’t liking your work. Please yourself first and the rest will follow, at least I hope so
Thanks Sophie. Cliches work because they are often the best way of representing a scene. It is possible to avoid them but sometimes it results in a weaker image so I’d rather have both.
Nice video as ever and some beautiful images Steve, but what happened to pinhole photography? You promised to do a lot of pinhole shooting in 2022? 😉
Don’t remind me Henk, so many cameras, so little time 😢
Is that the new Ulanzi tripod? One twist to extend or collapse all leg sections? I quite fancy one myself
It’s an old Velbon 665 aluminium model sadly, cheap but effective.
Interesting Steve … I don’t believe I’ve seen any of your colour work before (or maybe I just tend to remember in black & white).
We all remember BW! We dream in BW! unless use of substances.. I've never!
Have a look for his video comparing Ektar with Velvia
Not so much colour in recent years Nigel but there’s a fair bit in the back catalogue 😊
Sad to see here, you're shooting more digital than ever onto this channel before....Steve. I do prefer film. Film is like magic - photons to photos, not pixels to RAW files...have a fine weekend !
Thanks Marc, I like to shoot with different cameras from time to time but I don’t see digital replacing my film setup.
@@SteveONions Thanks Steve, that's great to hear. 🙂
Excellent images Steve, are you sure they’re not AI generated??? 😂. They look too good to be yours 😂
How long before AI can generate our images for us? 😲
@@SteveONions I think it's already here :(. Like many things that can be created by machine and computer it will only make the hand crafted, made by man (or woman) version more desirable and valuable.
