If you had read the documentation, you would know that you can flip the magnifying glasses up toward the front when not in use. I had a set of plastic ones and I upgraded to those and I like them a lot. I also bought the USB power ones. I did not want to rely on AAA batteries.

You are 100% correct in that one must be comfortable in their own skin when using these sorts of things. I have a set that is a copy of the classic Optivisor and I look like that stereotypical grumpy old guy working on trains or models in a basement one might see on TV. Given that I actually AM a grumpy old guy its not so bad :-D These new ones might be easier to transport, may give them a try also. Cheers!

I'm over 50 ad can't manage without them. I've used various types for many years now. I always say to new miniature painters that if you can't see what you are painting, the quality of your results will suffer. I'd say good lighting and magnification will make more difference than expensive Brushes and fancy paints etc.

Yes I too have the USB rechargeable - the charge lasts longer than battery. I'm on pair three - the switches on the first two went bad. The switch on the USB one is a push on/off rather than toggle like the ones Mel has.The effect of having light DIRECTLY (shouting for emphasis only) on the subject you are working on -- whether it be painting or building -- cannot be understated. We rarely set up our painting/building areas with light behind us -- and if we did, we'd be creating a shadow anyway -- this is the solution even if you only need the minimal (or no) magnification. As for an indispensable hobby tool - Fingernail Clippers

I use the same exact pair for painting eyes and fine details on minis. The higher magnification lenses give me a headache after a while and lower magnification is usually not super useful for me, so I don't use them all the time, but they have really been a game changer for me when it comes to painting eyes, buckles etc., A terrific tool even for people with perfect vision and they are pretty affordable (when I bought mine they were $20 something USD on Amazon).
I feel like 90% of the stuff most of us use are not made specifically for terrain and I don't use anything particularly unique, but recently discovered something I have not seen before:
you can 100% use greenstuff world texture rollers on latex caulk if you have a sink close at hand to wash it off between rolls. Works great for battle mats. Not sure if I'm the first person to do this, or if it works with all brands of latex caulk, or texture rollers, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.
Love your channel and all the positivity and knowledge you bring to all us terrain nerds!

I bought a headband magnifier that wraps around the head but pretty much functions like the one here. My biggest issue isn't seeing up close. I have exceptionally good close vision for mini painting. The problem is working that short distance with my glasses off for long periods of time.
The strain of moving back to long distance vision is jarring and uncomfortable. This thing solved the problem of seeing up close with my corrective lenses on

Back in the 70s I lusted after an 'Optivisor' but pocket money was stretched thin, in the early 2000s found a cheap plastic knock-off on the local market, jolly handy.
Have also used +3 ready-readers from the pound shop, also good but can't be used if you wear glasses and they have no built in light.
Currently lusting after a set of 'headlights' (used by sewing types, no magnification but excellent light), pocket money (pension) is again an issue and haven't seen any cheap ones. Considering using crock clips to add lights to my glasses. Only drawback is the reaction of people when you look at them, the lights are quite bright and they tend to recoil like they just realised you are Dracula.
Toenail clippers, wouldn't be without them. Get the biggest you can find. Handy for all sorts of odd jobs.
Small sharpening stone - When giving something a coat of looking at just give the blade a little TLC - Blades stay sharper and last many times longer.

I use 2x binocular surgical loupes, German made. Usually go for near 300 usd/euro, got lucky and found some used ones locally. I also have a large illuminated magnifying glass on an articulated arm. It's near 5x. So far I've been using a desk magnifier lamp - basically a 5" magnifier with LED lights around the rim, on a flexible goose neck. It's been great, but one thing you lose looking through the single lens is any sense of depth perception.

@@TheTerrainTutor Just tried 'em out for the first time. Feels strange at first, effectively wearing two sets of glasses. Also anything beyond the focus range is blurred to all heck, so you can't see the table to pick things up, dip your brush into paint etc. You have to get into the habit of swivelling your eyes to look around the magnifier lenses instead of turning your head to look at things. But once you get used to it, it's fantastic to be able to see the mini you're painting magnified, in focus, and with depth perception so you know where your brush is going. I've just painted highlights on a mini. I've NEVER been able to do that before. This really is a gamechanger and I'd second the recommendation to try them out. The separate head magnifier/desk lamp combo is way better than the all-in-one magnifier lamp.
