    My god, that's crazy for spanish speakers.... we only have 5 vowel sounds, that is it.

    • @tanyushakoteykina751
      @tanyushakoteykina751 6 лет назад +31

      In Russian language there's 6 and we don't see the difference between short and long vowels, so it's a journey for many non-native English speakers lol

      Some languages have just three (like most variants of Arabic or Quechua)

      yeah but there are also combinations that can make different sounds similar to the vowels you dummy

      For real, it's driving me crazy 😭 I'm doing an English teacher training course and phonetics is a literal nightmare. There's like 3 sounds similar to the Spanish "A" that I can barely tell apart, let alone properly pronounce, same with the "O" sounds... the rest are easier to figure out though

    This video is really helpfull for non-native English speakers. :) Everything is explained clearly and these obvious little jokes make it more natural than the usual standard phonetics and phonology sessions at university. I appreciate it. :) Good for revision.

    Respectable Teacher Emma Jakobi, you are one of the great Spoken English Language Teacher. Your method of Teaching & Explanation are excellent. The best thing I have noted about your explanations are, things are at once learned & there no need to put extra burden or put in extra time for learning the subject that you teaches. Please accept my thanks for very nice & very good teaching.

I think she's not american or canadian. she speaks the real "t" in little (liTTle) instead of "liDDle". she speaks "wɜːd" ( in word) instead wɝːd, the R sound gone. she speak /lɜːn/ (in learn) instead /lɝːn/ and so on. is she british, irish, australian,New Zealander?

    For many years it is hard to me to understand how you (native speaker) differ sounds:
    * æ and ʌ - are both short from ɑ:
    I often hear æ like e sound from native speakers or like ʌ. It brakes my mind.
    In Ukrainian we have A-sound equals to ɑ: or ʌ (short) - in any case it is A-letter and there is no double meaning. But æ - it is something Abstract.
    * ə (schwa sound) In Ukrainian we have sound pair [jo] (russian-letter Ё). During pronunciation of this pair we can hear [jɛ:əɒ] but I can not distinguish schwa sound from there. Sometimes I use ɒ-sound (short from ɔ:), sometimes - ɛ:
    * ʊ - I understand it's shorter than u: but it is difficult to distinguish each of them.
    * i and i: - are easiest for understanding. i: is soft like Ukrainian i-sound and i is close to Ukrainian letter-И
    Btw, Your diphthong sounds are Not difficult vowel for us. We often use j-sound to join other sounds. Really difficult vowels are ə-schwa, æ, ʌ and ʊ (sometimes)
    I need more video about that )

    [ɪ] and [i:] have nothing to do with each other. The IPA people understand this only very lately and that is why they change [i] to [ɪ]. It is wrong way to take and teach them in pair. The starting position of [ɪ] is actually closer to the schwa sound [ə], that 'lazy' and fully relaxed position.

    I had the same problem shown in the example when I went on holiday to a small town close to Boston! I was looking for the beach so I asked for indications to a policeman I met. I actually asked him "where is the bitch" while I was meaning "the beach". He was a little bit confused by the very start but at the end he understood I wasn't an English native speaker and he said "oh, do you mean the beach?" and me: "yes, that's what I said!". Only after a while, I realized the misunderstanding... :D

    Hi!
    I can't copy this video to my students in Google Classroom. Do you know why? It worked last year.

    well that is the problem with us Indonesian when speaking english. we dont have that long vowel sound in our language so our mouth not developed to pronounce that sound properly as in english. we we ended up saying b*tch instead of beach and SIT instead of sheet (we don't have that SH sound as well) or Sick instead of six

    Hi there, I'm currently delivering some english classes and found your channel very helpful, we just passed this lesson, by any chance do you have an IPA video for consonants?
