Recorded live in concert presented by the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 6th, 2019
This poem written by French poet Paul Verlaine in 1869 served as inspiration for Claude Debussy's most famous work from his "Suite bergamasque".
Your soul is a select landscape
Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fantastic disguises.
All sing in a minor key
Of victorious love and the opportune life,
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight,
With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,
That sets the birds dreaming in the trees
And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,
The tall slender fountains among marble statues.
- Paul Verlaine, 1869

- Paul Verlaine, 1869

Yummy sounds 🎉🎉🎉
Bit late to the party on this one do kinda wish you took more of an inspiration from David Oistrakh on this sounds great but just not quite the best.
I was in this concert!! They did 4 encores and after the concert they hugged, took selfies, and signed Ray's CD for everyone who was in line. I have so much respect for this sincere and passionate violinist. He smiled the whole time even though I imagine he would have been super tired... Ray's the best :) Julio is too!
Thanks for sharing! That sounds like an amazing experience.
they only did 3 encores for SF :( no Csardas
Yeojin Christina Choi -- echo exact same sentiment after Nov 3 recital in San Fran (CA). I couldn't have written it better. He must have been exhausted after our recital with also 4 encores but there he was signing our CDs and taking selfies with us in huge line..always smiling. He is such a blesssing !! A shining example of a human being...and of course brilliant violinist. THANK YOU RAY CHEN & YOUR PARENTS!!!
Lucky you
I can imagine. When I got aware that he had played a concert about an hour away from me I almost cried for missing it. Travelling is not easy for me and this was so close.
I love Debussy, Debussy is my favourite. Sometimes I think about Debussy.
Always finish on the Bach, never finish on Debussy
Hmmm twoset fan here (it's a dirty joke)
@@otto3061 YOU SIR HAVE MADE MY ENTIRE DAY 👏👏
@@otto3061 oh my god- shsh
@@kelislim1465 I don't get it, can you explain the joke please?
Shout outs to Julio the accompanist, he is a real pianist that has excellent technical abilities!!
Edit: thank you so much for liking my comment and *RAY BAE* 's reply!!!
Gotta practice 40 hours now!!
Shout outs to Julio the pianist*
Ray Chen thank you for acknowledging pianists as musicians in their own right 🥺🥺
I think accompanist are for competitions...
since this isn't a competition, it's more like a duo performance? 🤔
@@macso6687 Exactly, this was written for Violin and Piano, so yes a duet. Exquisitely played, by the way by, both Ray and Julio.
I mean usually if a violin and pianist play together the violin has the solo part and if not it is a duet
I’ve just bought tickets to his concert in Brisbane next year in August! And I’m sitting in the front row right in front of him and I’m literally so excited. Ray Chen is the person that changed my life. He inspired me so much and would be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. I probably wouldn’t be playing violin, I wouldn’t be perusing music. Music is my entire life, I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for Ray Chen so there’s almost no chance he will see this but if he does: Ray Chen, thank you so much for changing my entire world!
Jesus will change your life! Ray Chen is just a man and music is ephemeral. I love music and I'm a violinist as well, but never I have felt so complete after I gave my life to Christ. Think about it, He loves you :-)
@@caiovalente505 hmm understand where youre coming from, but it's interesting how you could just bring religion into a video about music
@@magicalmew5209 yeah, this is a video with beautiful music. Not a place for evangelism
fuck you
Thank you for your beautiful words! I'll see you next year :)
and props to the audience who didn't start clapping right away but did hold the tension until ray and julio released it. This are the moments I always look for - those seconds right after a breathtaking performance where the tension is still physically in the air, the sound still silently vibrating and everyone holding their breath.. SO SO glad that not one person broke the spell.
Someone clapping AFTER a piece is done isn't inconsiderate. YOU just want that extra couple seconds of silence. You don't dictate concert etiquette for what not to do after a piece is done lol.
Coughing/ sneezing during the performance, cell phones not turned off, people clapping before the piece is over is inconsiderate.
Shawn Mitchell Not dictating, just admiring an audience who loves music in the same way as he/she. (I prefer it the same way, think it’s more enjoyable if the last sound can lingering a second before applauding.)
@@xandraxandra1437 that's all fine an dandy until you call those people inconsiderate based on your own standards. That in itself is rude to insinuate.
Ok, peace people. I see your point and edited the comment. yes, it's my view of things, but I didn't want to hate on anyone or dictate anything, sorry if my wording led to presume otherwise, was just stating my admiration for that specific moment.
Agreed. I dislike all those times where they clap right after and break that magical moment.
Oh my god. The audience waited!
I wonder what thoughts go through a performer's mind during the brief but deadly silent moments from the audience!
Ray’s interpretation is breathtakingly beautiful...!
agreed
When I saw the title I was a bit nervous because of how expressive Clair de Lune is- but he killed it! Reawakened my love for God!! He’s truly a hard worker
Wasn't it though.
Ray Chen just puts so much soul into his playing. I could watch him play for hours anyday
Ohh ray, stop making us cry 😭
But happy tears. Ecstatic tears.
yes but i was already crying in another video, then it came and i couldnt see for a few second bcuz of the tears 😔
0:00 oh gosh now that is beautiful *tearing up throughout the whole video*
I love the way the violin becomes a part of the violinist, how they breathe life into it! It’s just astonishing
I was lucky enough to be there for this..... Ray and Julio played 4 Encores and absolutely tore the house down. Ray is an absolute unit.
i usually prefer the piano-only arrangement of clair de lune because i always felt that having another instrument play the melody was not fitting, but this. this. this is incredible. ray’s interpretation and musicality is perfect-impossible to match. julio plays with such fluidity and gentleness. it all comes together so beautifully. this performance brought several tears to my eyes, which i was not expecting. ray and julio sound amazing together!
Well said. They're both great. Both the original piano-only arrangement and this one. And the two performers.
You know... I listened to this with my eyes closed before sleeping and at the end when I didn’t hear any clapping I was confused... I thought the video had ended so I kept eyes shut and had been startled by an unexpected cheer from the audience 5 seconds after the piece was over. Truly wonderful
the dynamics are just simply amazing...
His face really sells the emotion tbh, idk it just looks like he is really into it. Beautiful performance dude.
WOW SUCH BEAUTY
Are there really people who dislike this? To quote a movie, this is like "something the Lord made". Beautiful. Perfect. If you can't enjoy this, I feel sorry that something is holding you back.
Nos hablas a través de tu música, magistralmente interpretada ...gracias por compartir.. espectacular...

his playing literally made me cry :(
So ethereal and wistful. I can almost feel air in the light of the moon. Breath-taking🙏🏼
His bow control!!!😍🥰🤩
That was absolutely gorgeous!!!! ❤️ Breathtakingly lovely.
This is my favorite version of Clair de Lune because his love for this piece shows so much in his playing
One of my three favorite interpretations. Beautiful and delicate.
My heart melts when i hear this piece on piano, i dont know anymore because you did that with the violiiinn, IM CYINGGGG
I was there and the moment he started playing this, I started tearing up. Thank you, Ray and Julio, for sharing such incredible music. Best duo hands down.
Ray Chen ROCKS!
Great job Julio!
When Ray and Julio played this at the SF recital 1st Sunday of Nov. 2019, I got teary. Seeing you guys live just took this piece to another level of lovely
What a beautiful piece and you did it fabulously. I was in tears at the end. Thank you Mr. Chen & Mr. Elizalde.
Perfect! I wasn't expecting to find a proper version of this, but here it is!
Absolutely beautiful! Love it when Julio accompanies! Wonderful! Thank you. X
It's the first time I've listened to this piece arranged with violin, and it brought me to tears, amazing performance and interpretation, Thank you! ❤
i feel ray has stripped the sorrow nature of the song out. he has made an angelic version of embrace and empathy
Sempre me alegra ouvir te
You guys are just too cool, everything is so well played. YAS Ray and Julio! Thanks for visiting us in SF!!!
this song means so much to me and i don’t know how to describe how much this affected me. violin is such a beautiful instrument probably my favourite and hearing my favourite song of all time on the violin makes the whole world better. This masterpiece fixes everything and makes me whole. Thank you for this.
As brilliant as this is, and it is brilliant, I don’t think that I’ve ever heard a violin ever sound more like a theremin before. It sounds almost manipulated so as to be mesmeric. Makes me proud to be a fellow countryman.
Wow this is so beautifully played, what a wonderful duet🥰
Absolutely sublime and tender as hell.
Please never lose the part of you that is so passionate and romantic about your music. It is for these reasons I fall every time for the connection between your hands, your instrument, and the heart of raw emotion that comes effortlessly from within. It’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing your gifts. 🤲🏻
I came to this performance and I’m truly satisfied with what I heard and felt that night. Thank you ray and Julio 🤗
It didn’t dawn on me that I was hardly breathing until the very end because I didn’t want to disturb such a perfect performance from both professional classical master musicians! Well done!Bravo! Splendid! 🤩🤩🎼🎶🎵🎹🎻👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This is where the violin becomes the human voice. Ray & Julio. Quite the team.
I just cry and I feel love, what an amazing musicians are you!! I fell so happy. Thank you so much. Saludos desde México!!
One of my all time favorite pieces! Oh my goodness, thank you for this! 💞💞💞
I love Ray and Julio's interpretation of this piece! I play piano and my gf and I both play violin and this piece has always reminded me of her. Thank you for posting this precious performance!
I never thought that violin could be played beautiful like this. I listen them very day now. Thanks Ray!
Ray and Julio what an amazing performance. This may be my new favorite version. So well done. Thanks for sharing it.
This was outstanding! I loved the emotion that was put into this. Thank you, Ray Chen, for playing this wonderful piece, and for the excellent job you have done in doing so.
Oh wow, watching this makes me want to learn how to play "Clair de Lune" on my violin - I'll probably never play as well as Ray but am I super inspired right now, hahaha. This was lovely
those notes are truly telling a beautiful story, enjoying the peaceful moment between the last note and the applause. feels eternity at the moment.
thank you Ray Chen!
I absolutely love this performance Ray!!!
Absolutely spell binding. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm so going to work on my bowing arm after watching this performance.
Why this makes me cry!
I love it that you provided the poet that inspired the composition. I did not know that before. Thanks a lot for that!
OMG this song is so soothing, I went to Rays Concert about August and My God! I can see he shows a lot of passion, not only to the song, but to his violin. His vibrato is so rich! I want to learn this! I started violin at the age of six and for three years, I listen to Ray👏👏
Uma das minhas preferidas ❤
came here after twoset's video with eddy's clair de lune. this piece is just so amazing. piano or violin.
That ending was just soooooo majestic
This looks like the recent recital at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto last Friday, November 8. All the works featured the violin and piano, except for the famous Chaconne of Bach, for solo violin, which was the first work after intermission. In the first half of the recital, Ray played a sonata by Grieg, followed by a sonata by Saint Saens. Then after intermission, Ray played Bach's Chaconne. After the Chaconne was this work, Claire de Lune. After the last scheduled work on the programme, Ravel's Tsigane, Ray played played a total of 4 encores: an original work in the tango style, Estrellita by Manuel Ponce (arr. Heifetz), Kreisler's Tambourin Chinois , and Victorio Monte's Csardas (Ray's arrangement, I presume).
this is my favourite piece from Debussy.. and ray played it TToTT
It's the best time to listen "clair de lune" in the mid-autumn festival in Taiwan✨
Oh GOSH you guys!!!!! Such a simple piece so beautifully played!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I could play like that! I can't, so I'm just sittin' back enjoying the ear candy!!!!!! Wish you would post more.....pretty pleeeeeaaaaase?????? That was killer AWESOME you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a 2nd year flute piece. I had no IDEA it could sound so GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (jaw still dropped in total surprise!) I'm listening to that AGAIN!!!!

This touched all my emotions. I can't stop crying. So beatiful!

beyond beauty. this is an absolute masterpiece
Too beautiful 😭😭
I was really moved when you play this in Busan this year. Though I was in a concert hall but felt the gentle moonlight through your violin. Hope you to visit Korea quite often.
love ya bro. gonna learn to play violin someday...right now engineering shit.
Purely angelic music
This is the first time I heard Clair de Lune played on a violin😍 It‘s lovely!!🥰 I really like to hear you play!🥰
Tão etéreo e melancólico. Quase consigo sentir o ar à luz da lua. De tirar o fôlego🙏🏼
Beautiful arrangement and soulful performance of a timeless melody. Thanks Ray!

what a beautiful Debussy
Phenomenal playing. Been keeping up with you ever since your victory at QE years back. You sounded better in each round of the competition then, and you sound better every time I hear you play now - the mark of a great! Looking forward to hearing more from you!
i love his interpretation.. god so beautifull😭😭
Guys you gotta see Clair de Lune on theremin. You won't regret it.
Itttss so a ghostly sounnndd! Thaats great!
*Great duet / duo*
I loved to being able to watch this live.
I'd give up my legs just to play "Merry Go Round of Life" on his Stradivarius
This is amazing. Thank you for including the poem!
So beautiful Ray!!! It made me cry😥
You play so well! You’re my inspiration when it comes to music. (Although I’m not a violinist). 💙
I can' t breath.
Thank you so much Ray, I really really enjoyed watching you playing this with such amazing passion and sensitivity too. I really really love ❤️ this, and you played really really beautifully too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
1:50 this part always reminds me of Spider-Man swinging through New York City, everything flashing by him like a blur as he jets through the sky.
너무 아름 다워요 beautiful~♡♡♡
Beautiful. It took my breath away. Thanks for posting.
our beautiful music is still played by today we love clair de lune it has a feeling that we should all have we shouldn’t look through our differences we should look in the inside and turn our world the way it should be and still.. no one ever had the heart to do that from on this day which hurts our human world that we were born in
Ray, you are my hero!
You charge me your energy and looking at you, I better play the violin! I like to watch your videos and improvise. That's so excited to do.
Hello from Ukraine!
So beautiful
wow! I was here on RUclips, this video appeared for me, so I came to watch it!! You play very well!!! Indeed! I'm a fan of Brazil!!!
You were amazing. We had an amazing time at the Walt Disney Concert Hall
