  • Learn about the basics of lighting design as Brandon Eckstorm, Entertainment Product Marketing Manager for Vectorworks, discusses how to design a stage wash from start to finish. Vectorworks allows you to design the venue and stage, add different hanging and lighting fixtures, check photometrics, add backlighting, and create a rendering - all directly within the software. Brandon will also showcase tips and tricks that you can use to improve your lighting designs.

Easily one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on setup

This is a nice quick easy guide. Being an experienced LD even I learnt something new.
You make the rendering look easy but in reality Vectorworks is very unstable when it comes to rendering especially large truss and stage rigs. Crashing, beach balling all with a top spec MacBook.

So one of the trick I am using is to adjust the "Simplified Truss" class and add 2D images as a mask; then I turn off my 3D truss class so it has less to render.

Great info. It would be even more helpful if you took your time by slowing down while explaining what steps you’re doing. Many people are not as fluid with VectorWorks and can get lost trying to follow which menus you selected.

Wow, thanks for the great step by step guide. 3:48 One thing I am always tripping over is how to 3D rotate a 2D dwg or pdf mixed Plan aka Topview and Sideview with is mostly the file coming from the theaters and create a rough 3D Plan from it the best way? Thanks

Hi, I'm on V22 and am trying to render LED bars - instead of there being a long 'bar' of light source, there is just a singular source as if it were a moving head/single directional light, am i missing something? thanks

I don't remember how to do that off the top of my head, but if go to Vectorworks University, there is a video tutorial that will show you how to do it.

Can Vectorworks work as a visualizer with Chamsys or GrandMA?

Not directly in the product, they do have a "free" priviz software that uses sACN and ARTnet as well was MAnet. It's not the best looking but if I just need to get a show built it works fine.
