  • MechCommander 2 is a real-time tactics game released in 2001 for Windows as a direct sequel to MechCommander. This time you assume the role of the commander of an unnamed mercenary company who fights for the various Great Houses involved in this story.
Compared to MechCommander, the game-play is way too simplified and dumbed down. Mechs can easily be salvaged in- or after mission provided reactor core is intact, or purchased outright at certain points of the campaign. Better weapons are available in unlimited numbers after capturing weapon factories in campaign missions. As a consequence, there is not much of a motivation to play more cautiously in order to salvage that juicy Clan tech like you would in MechCommander.
Also, the AI is poorly programmed for they take "focus firing" way too literally, which is a weakness that can easily be abused. Higher difficulty settings don't fix AI behaviour, but merely adds artificial difficulty in the form of terrible accuracy for player-controlled units.
With these points said, this game is a bit of a letdown when compared to its predecessor. Though, it does have its moments, I like the make-up of House Liao's Mandrissa Cho.

If you wish to play this game but have trouble running it on a modern Windows PC, try the following steps. You will need to download both the ISO and RIP versions from MyAbandonware (link in description). From there:
    - Extract both packages to your preferred location
    - Mount the ISO (MDF) file and proceed to do a full installation
    - Meanwhile, head over to the RIP folder and into "data" folder, delete the "sound" and "movies" folder
    - Now head back into the "data" folder in the ISO installed folder, copy the 2 folders named above and paste them into the RIP "data" folder
    - Launch Mc2Rel.exe and the game should start, no compatibility or admin privilege needed
    - If mouse cursor is not appearing, you will need to work your way into the Options menu and disable Hardware Mouse Update
Now you should be able to play the game nicely with all the audio and FMVs.
    * If you do have the physical copy, I assume it would work fine without doing all these, but if it does not, following the steps above (with physical disc install instead of ISO) should probably yield the same result.

Sound a bit confusing to be honest...
Install ISO in a new "A" folder > Unpack RIP version in newer "B" folder > Copy missing Data > Video/Sound from the ISO > Play (using RIP version)...
Installing the ISO is a way to ensure windows detect the game properly installed and the lack of video/sound is related to some copyright issue since those aren't part of the freeware provided by Microsoft...The confuse part comes from a RIP version that has missing files and no proper installation setup.

Sorry, this doesn't work for me. The RIP version does nothing when run.

The rip trick put me on the right track, many thanks.
I'd like to add to your guide:
Any combination of the following may help you run the game. For me (Windows 10 64 bit) it was all of them.
      - Do not install the game from the ISO. Simply copy the "data" folder from the ISO to the rip folder (to have movies and music).
      - Delete the "vidcard.csv" file from the rip folder.
      - Delete the "badcard.csv" file from the rip folder.
      - Delete "imagehlp.dll" from the "assets\Binaries" subfolder of the rip.
      - If the game runs but is choppy and pixelated (especially noticeable with the ground) it means software rendering is forced on, even if you turned on hardware rasterizer in options. Use dgVoodoo2 (may hang the game) or WineD3D (worked for me).
      - (Optionally) Install patch 1.1. Among others it adds maps for solo missions, fixes the AI and reduces campaign mission rewards (e.g. you only get 4300 C-Bills for the 1st mission instead of 43000 - yes, that's 10x less). Yes, it makes the game harder but arguably that's the way it was meant to be originally.

@@123TauruZ321 3 was great on the presentation of the 'Mech combat and the weight that they had but I agree other aspects suffered due to Zipper just trying to get the damn game released already. MechLab was unbalanced because you could cram any weapons into any section (as per tabletop but you're trying to roleplay in that instance), and being able to engage the enemy beyond draw distance of the sparse terrain.
That and the modern compatibility is just utter garbage.

@@racer927 Agree on those points. It had certain cool features but seemed unfinished. Good point about any weapon on any part. That could have been worked out. Maybe even just had a strict set weapon configuration on each mech. Would make the game more strategic in that sense. I personally just loaded as many ER Large Lasers and heat sinks as i felt balanced, and aimed at enemy mech's legs from as far away as possible. It got me through the game. It was kind of fun playing around with trying to use terrain to one's advantage, but reading enemy mechs' movement and such felt too difficult. Also controlling own team AI was a hassle. If you take a single mech and get the enemy to start chasing you, they enemy units will only attack that single mech regardless of the actions from your other mechs. It's been 23 years since MC2, and there's no sign of a MC3. That's some majorly untapped potential.
If we were to get MC3, what would you want to see in it?
    Here's my list:
    - Improve the viability of close-range weapons and/or nerf certain long-range weapons. So often, you'll just have players slap on as many ERPPCs and such as possible and snipe the enemy to death. It's pragmatic, sure, but it feels like any MC3 title should give some bigger drawbacks to long-range burst-damage weapons. And no, that minimum range thing doesn't work because your enemy will get nailed before they can exploit that, or your mechs could just reposition. You should be given a reason to use stuff like UAC20's and SRMs outside of self-imposed challenge.
    - Make it so Light and Medium mechs are needed in late-game missions. Once you hit later missions, everyone just loads up as many Assault mechs as possible and goes guns blazing. Tonnage limits can only accomplish so much in restricting how many mechs you bring along. I'd make it so that various missions have secondary objectives that you can't pull off if you don't have enough fast mechs. Maybe MC3 could take a few notes from MWO on how to make Light and Medium mechs viable.
    - Improvements to cover mechanics. We've all seen where our mechs fire ERPPCs at an enemy that's pop-tarting from behind a building and those ERPPC blasts go through the building like it wasn't even there. That should be changed so that using buildings for cover is more than just a "need line of sight to fire" thing. I'd look at how Homeworld 3 is doing it - missiles in HW3 have a travel time and can hit debris if your ships duck behind cover in time. Make it the same in MC3 - if you fire at a mech at long range and it ducks behind a building before your shots reach it, said shots hit the building instead.
    - More mech customization options. MC2 did an okay job, but there's a lot more you could do with it, such as hardpoints, engine customization, armor types (i.e. Reflective, Reactive, etc.), AMS, and so forth. Mech customization is a huge part of the franchise, so having more of it would be a good thing.

      @ShadrackMeduson 2 года назад

thats why i only start the game with green mechwarriors so i can choose all their perks, besides on the long run the perks are not that important truly, if you have a mechwarrior with max accuracy level and max maneuverability the perks do minor diference. For example the max accuracy level of a mechwarrior is 80% and with a heavy autocanon specialisation perk the accuracy while using a heavy autocanon goes from 80% to 85%. Another example is if you have a mechwarrior with max accuracy and you add a medium range specialisation his accuracy while using medium range weapons goes from 80% to 82%. But for personal choise i always go for laser, er laser, and third and fourth perk goes to whatever depending of the mechs i want to use from there on, i always finish the davion campaing with a thor, several mad cats, a bloodasp and other normal mechs, so i keep a mechwarrior with heavy autocanon perk, a couple with ppc perk and a ace with gaus riffle perk while all have the laser and er laser perk, covering nearly all their main weaponary. Sometimes i like to change things up with two bloodasps for the final missions, one with double gaus rifle and another one with double clan ultra heavy autocanons.

So I can save as many partisans as possible. I bring the Cyclops, too. For its top-notch sensor.
Partisans can distract the offenders, allowing my squad to cleanse them without getting noticed. Enemies will have the time and space to attack my mercs if too many partisans die before we arrive.

Head to "Load Game" and find an auto save called "aftergame". Load it, and you can find Renard's Atlas and all other mechs you had salvaged in your mech bay.

I assume the game was sourced from MyAbandonware. You will actually need to download both the ISO and RIP versions. From here:

@@ryanh7844 Thanks to all the smart people out there who figured it out. You can try again following those steps and see if you can run it nicely. I have to mention that the game did crash from time to time especially during mission loading, you just won't see them because I obviously cut them out 😉

are you trying to run the game from the disk? or are you trying to run the game preinstalled in a folder file?

@@ShadrackMeduson recently I installed it via disk. Then tried to run it in comparability mode and as admin. Once it gets to the main menu the program crashes though.
Is there steps I could take to get it to run on windows 10?

what system are you using, or graphic settings? I tried this on my win7 and it was crappier than my windows 10 version.......but doesn't compare to your graphics. I used another version, direct play, also has video.....but graphics look worse than yours.

@@Chanwsan i read it, and found nothing about it. I tried doing that to mine, bumping the settings to high....but there was no difference......last time i did the ISO version, it crashed.....direct play works (oh well, I'm almost done with the game anyway)

yeah, they should really take a shot on a real mc 3 in the battletech universe... much more fun than the so called third game. Sadly they maybe tried to promote battletech tabletop with the round based mode of Battletech. Would be great to have real mech commander game coming...

For some reason when I was a teenager and this and out I had no interest in it, only the standard FPS mechwarrior
And it’s obvious I would have loved it

I've been trying to run this game for a while, first on a Windows 10 machine and then on a XP VM. No matter what I do it always has a really small screen for anything outside of missions and the missions have a bunch of patchwork textures all over, which really makes it look ugly. It's odd that it's the same developers as AoE 2 which still runs quite well.

I still have the original disk and disks for MW3. Commander just seem like endless click walking shoot at this click walk again. No real strategy other than March your guys around.

You're not wrong, 'Warrior is a better series as a whole. Still, 'Commander is pretty fun.
