Just to add on to the soldiers' experiences throughout history. Often enough, war was the only time they actually got away from home, most people rarely traveled more than 20 miles from the place they were born and they probably didn't understand the language of whatever place they were sent to. I live in northern Bavaria and it's mind-boggling to think how many different armies have fought on this soil. Germanic tribes against another, them against the Romans, the Franks against the pagan tribes, various German nations against another, the British, French, even Sweden occupied the region in the 30 years war, and of course the US as well in WW2. It's even crazier if you look at the cradles of civilization e.g. Mesopotamia, Egypt, The Indus River Valley, China, and how disputed these places have been over the millennia!
Great point! I imagine there are some really amazing archaeological finds in that area! I know when they dug the foundation for the Verdun memorial, they found enough skeletal remains to fill an entire area as a separate exhibit. Incredibly fascinating yet profoundly sad.
If I'm not misstaken, all the official live recordings from "The Great Tour" (2019-2020) are from the perspective of the band. I've heard that the Gothenburg concert had about 14,000 in the audience, but it looks more with the lights. The "lighters" were partly cellphones and partly glowsticks (I think it was).
From the early 1600s to the early 1700s Sweden was always in a state of war with no peace nearly a hundred years of constant war. That is where the song come from not just the thirty years war.
I'm not sure they are necessarily better, their perspective is different. Is the experience of a single soldier better than the experience of thirty years of constant fighting, destruction, pillaging and disease following in its wake? For Swedish people, the perspective of a Swedish soldier may be more imminent, more relatable, but for people living in the theater of war, the experience of the general population may be more relevant.
The translated captions are a bit off. The line "because of the war, destroy a man" is supposed to be "because the war can, destroy a man". I gets a whole other context when you see the correct translation. All of s sudden it turns from killing someone to having PTSD.
Annihilate is a much better choice of words in my opinion... Destroy is not quite the correct word, Swedish is a very wordy language that can't always be fairly translated to English.
I was at this concert, somewhere in the middle fairly close to stage. Almost 2 years on the day now (14th of feburary 2020) so it was just before covid. It hits really hard, "Went to war for Sweden, was baptízed in blood. Out there death awaits, not heroism. On the fields where kinsmen fall, no songs are heard. Challanging our fates, once again." is such a fantastic line about the horrors that is war. I love Sabatons songs that are about heroism too, but this is the other side of that coin. For every Alvin York and the Chasseurs Ardennais there are countless others story that just ended when they died far from home and was forgotten. Sweden has not been to war for 200 years, but that hardly matters, it's such an emotional song. People where singing their hearts out and many cried. Probably my absolute favourite live concert experience ever.
at scandinavium arena gothenburg sweden. around 11k people in the crowd. if it were in poland the crowed never could sing in swedish xD the carolus rex album´s are in both English and Swedish. the songs have the some tunes but the lyrics can be close our like in a lifetime of war and en livstid i krig. its totaly diffrent.

Another detail of this song is that the soldiers rarely chose that life themselves. The land owners could pick a young man from their area and send him so that they themselves could get a tax cut.
Awesome reaction! The Carolus Rex album is the only Sabaton album released in both Swedish and English, since it covers Swedish history, namely the rise and fall of the Swedish empire. Most of the songs are the same in both languages, just translated. But with some of the songs, the two aren't merely translations but two different versions. En livstid i krig follows a Swedish soldier as he is sent out into war and A lifetime of war gives the listener an outside perspective of the 30 years war. Both songs cover the same war but from two completely different perspectives. So the English version is absolutely worth a look I would say. Other songs from the album that has different perspectives between the two versions are: 1648 Ett slag färgat rött/Killing Ground The song Runa Imperii is on both album but both versions are in Swedish. I hope this information helps you out if you want to dive deeper into the Carolus Rex album. :)
The difference between Killing Ground and Ett slag färgat rött is interesting, the english version doesn't really convey the brutality of the Caroleans during and after that battle as the Swedish version does.

Scandinavium Arena in Gothenbourg is one of Swedens biggest arenas . (Not THE biggest though). It takes a maximum of 14 000 plus at restaurants 2400 for music events. At icehockey games (and other sports events) it takes 12 000....f.y.i :-)
I was there its proberly one of the best concert i have ever been to last time i was in the same arena was when ZZ top were there. The arena named Scandinavium is hockey arena that proberly can take around 14-15 k ppl during a consert but it feels like 50k 12044 ppl when they play hockey
Kingdom Come: Deliverance takes place during the early 15th century. Where a civil war was raging as the nobles were dissatisfied with their ruler Wenceslaus IV/Václav IV, who was an inferior ruler compared to his father, Charles IV, who had also been Holy Roman Emperor. At the request of the Czech nobles who were against their king, Sigismund, king of Hungary, brought his soldiers into the kingdom and wrecked havoc and captured Wenceslaus. The two kings were half-brothers and Sigismund had a claim on the Czech throne as well.

Only he wasn't as successful and got executed for his preaching... which caused Bohemia/Czech Kingdom to erupt into another civil war as Hus' followers took up arms against the crown.
That's true, not many games out there where the protagonist is illiterate and you can make him learn to read if you so choose. That whole section with Father Godwin was gold. From the drinking song to the sermon you hold in his stead.

One thing about Sweden during this time was it's allottment system, which basically meant all it's soldiers were professionals. Every couple of farms had to group together and supply one soldier to the government, but was free to pick whom. Which usually meant a second or third son etc, who wouldn't inherit the farm. They were to supply and equip him, so the government basically got professional lifetime soldiers out of this. It later got even more entrenched, which families taking names like "battle", "strife" etc and having had generations of being soldiers. Sweden fought a lot of wars during this time, and repeatedly punched way above its "weightclass" due to the professionalism of it's army, when most other nations used farmers and mercenaries...
This was not the case during the 30years war. Indelningsverket as you describe was started during the king Karl XI later during the 1600hundreds. This way of manning the army was on until the early 1900.

Great reaction! Appreciate a lot that delve into the history. On one thing I have to disagree though - I think the 30 Years war was in reality nothing about religion. It was just an excuse. It was the different powers fighting for dominance. If you look at the multiple coalitions formed, you see a lot of allies with different religious beliefs.
Religion may not have been all of it, but it's a mistake to think that religion wasn't a major driving factor, since a dispute between Protestants and Catholics over who got to build churches where, is what kicked off the whole war. Especially noteworthy is quotes like "I'd rather make a desert of this country than rule over heretics." I think that was Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. That's not just a power grab, the guy was also a pious prick who basically ran his own inquisition to re-Catholicise whatever was within his reach.

And its actually not in the middle ages its in 1700s and again here there was a reformation in how the swedish military worked. So a family or group of ppl would recive a land lot from the crown. And for that land lot u would have to have to have a couple or plenty of men depending of how much land u recived which would be professional soldiers. And so yes they would be farmers or craftsmen like my family but also train to fight under tutorledge of officers a couple of months a year. My familys land lot named after our surname Åbyggeby it translates Å builders village (our surname is Åberg which is a reffernce to the nature around the lot. english translation would be rivermountain) can be found neighboring the village (ockelbo) that our prince Daniel is from. Later on my family would establish a watermill on the lot to supply the i guess village with about 10-15 houses with electricity and produce iron gates that still to this day can be found around the area at churches and so on. In sweden there is quite easy to find most of your familys history as long as you take the time to find it which means visiting a lot of churches. Greetings from sweden :)

Yes its quite amazing to know that much and im so grateful that i do. I have a lot to thank my grandfather for this. He had a big interest in history and have travelled a lot around the world to met ppl and hear their stories and to see for himself. And a lot of the time atleast when travelling in Sweden. When i was young he would bring me along and show me a lot of our and swedens history which have sparked a big interest in me aswell. I have not heard about the donner party previously. But i thank u for leading my interest in a new direction and i shall gladly learn more about that aswell :) the migrations to america is very interesting aswell and is a great testament to the resilieance of humans like this donner party seem to be a testament of. Civilians died because men were at war and not cultivating the land, there was famine and therefore weak people got sick with diseases and died. Men died in the war. Awful time. My country Finland was part of Sweden in those days and many farms had to provide a rider and a horse for the light cavalry. They were called Hakkapeliitta, they still live in folklore in Central Europe, they were truly feared.

My familys land lot named after our surname Åbyggeby it translates Å builders village (our surname is Åberg which is a reffernce to the nature around the lot. english translation would be rivermountain) can be found neighboring the village (ockelbo) that our prince Daniel is from.
Later on my family would establish a watermill on the lot to supply the i guess village with about 10-15 houses with electricity and produce iron gates that still to this day can be found around the area at churches and so on. In sweden there is quite easy to find most of your familys history as long as you take the time to find it which means visiting a lot of churches. Greetings from sweden :)
Wow!! That's so incredible that you know so much about your family history! We have a family historian who traced my father's line back to the revolutionary War and even crossing from Scotland in the 1600s. If you've ever heard of the donner party, one of my ancestors was their guide
Yes its quite amazing to know that much and im so grateful that i do. I have a lot to thank my grandfather for this. He had a big interest in history and have travelled a lot around the world to met ppl and hear their stories and to see for himself. And a lot of the time atleast when travelling in Sweden. When i was young he would bring me along and show me a lot of our and swedens history which have sparked a big interest in me aswell. I have not heard about the donner party previously. But i thank u for leading my interest in a new direction and i shall gladly learn more about that aswell :) the migrations to america is very interesting aswell and is a great testament to the resilieance of humans like this donner party seem to be a testament of.
