For the most part I'm not scared doing things in my wheelchair but going up stairs by yourself is insane. I give you mad props. I'm gonna have to try going up stairs by myself sometime. Thanks for showing how to do it
+Jerry Diaz Yeah, I might start with five or six steps though. Heh. If you're interested, my wife and i run a site (totally non-profit, it's to help people) for wheelchair travelers and their able-bodied partners. Give it a look. It's call "The Stray Wheel" and you can find it through google.
my paralyzed mother is getting ready to move in with me and we have stairs. so I'm looking at different stair options she doesn't have your strength (anymore she's been paralyzed for 25 years now and has really worked her body ragged ) but that is truly amazing! Keep it up! What an inspiration to everyone!
+Jerry Diaz that was awesome and this is coming from a person that's in a wheelchair herself but I just got to say there is no possible way that I can do that I don't have that kind of strength that you do wow that's cool
Heck yeah man. I've been paralyzed for 6 yrs an have never seen or thought of tht.. I've road stairs flying down em.. thanks man this video has opened my eyes
Wow this guy talent is impressive. Great job my guy. My son is paraplegic too since 2012 and this will be our first time living in a residence with a lot of stairs needed to see how it can be done and all I can say wow your amazing. I share your video with my son hopefully this inspire and motivate him too
I just started seeing someone who is in a chair and have been really concerned because my house has a lot of stairs, I've been wondering how or if he would be able to navigate them. I'm probably more concerned than he is because he's superman and nothing stops him. But this is good to know. Thank you for showing this video!
Wow that is super impressive. I’ve gone down stairs before but I’ve never even considered going up them like that. You make it look so easy even though I’m sure it’s not.
Awesome! I've seen this technique first 8 years ago. Blew my mind. I've never tried it with this many steps, I'm out of breath after six (great core strength, too much fat, lol). How do you avoid getting so close to the rails that you find yourself unable to reach down to pull yourself up another step? That's actually my biggest problem doing this.
Awesome I'm gonna have to try this! I can see where being strapped in would be a good idea! It'd suck to lose the chair at the top if you was by yourself!
Pretty good Jerry actually amazing I'm gonna try it cause I do have some pretty good upper body and arm strength...to tell you the truth I think I'm in better shape then before my accident
Your technique is really impressive (but then, so is your upper body strength). I'm surprised that coming down backwards like that doesn't rip the front castors off your chair (I've lost/broken a few ... doing mad moves). Thanks for a great vid.
Well done! I'm afraid one false move and a muscle spasm, I will be smiling down really fast! Now, you have a special made chair. Will this work with a standard Medicare Invacre wheelchair? The backs are much higger.
It depends how paralyzed you are. I noticed some of the moves require lifting of the legs, so if you can still move at the hip joint, just not the knee or feet, you can still get up the stairs. If however, you can't use the hip joint and have to use your arms to sit up or lean forwards or whatever, it's going to be quite a challenge.
like you said, a lot of strength, and on some stairs, steep ones, not possible. I recommend you try my method, hill-holders on the wheels. You already have the seat belt.
Dear Jerry, I'm from Nepal and paraplegia by spinal injury could not move without wheelchair most of the wheelchair user could not run in plain road. Where you are climbing a set of stairs on your wheelchair are you sport person or to show all wheelchair users can climb stairs too ?
Good job. Bro. I've been doing that since 1980. Some steps are too steep. Yours seem to be set up just right. One time I pulled the hand rails right out of the cement....lmao. And yes, it does help to strap in so u can lift the chair. I play lead guitar on high stages and only accept help if I need it.....Keep Trucking'!!
wow! man i've been in a wheelchair for over 30 years and never done this! people should know this is extremely difficult. going down is waaay easier ;). i once rode up an escalator in a subway in boston where i got off on the wrong side and didn't feel like waiting for the next train so i could cross n get to the elevator lol
Wow that's a long time man. Yea it takes practice and not as easy as it looks. I rather take an escalator anyday! Security don't like it much. They say it's dangerous. I got into an argument before with a lady that didn't want to let me use one. She said cuz I could fall or get hurt. I told her that I'm no different from any other human. I'm not made of glass. And she was like 75 years old. Told her she has a higher chance of getting hurt than I do. So i played it off as I was about to ale the elevator and I went on the escalator real fast. She was pissed. And the entire time down I was talking shit to her. Like ooooooo look at me. I Sooooo fragile, hope I don't get hurt. Hahaha
i have congenital spina bifida so been a para since birth (L3-L4). yeah it's weird nobody gave me shit for the escalator thing but i did have a friend with me that stood behind me while i went up so maybe that was the difference...i wouldn't recomend it in the middle of summer if you live in a humid climate...holding on is a trick in itself haha. i do get a lot of weird comments from the older crowd tho. a lot of my neighbors seem oddly amazed when i do my laundry. like the fact that i'm sitting down makes it some kind of magic trick or something haha. amd then when i leave they insist on holding the door for me while standing in it. that's always a fun experiment in self restraint lol. anyway man i'm sure i don't have to tell you enjoy your life to the fullest but i'm gonna anyway -cheers :)
In all honesty buddy i wouldn't make it up first step if not loose my nerve on second step if not loose all my strength on third. Big respects on all three, strangely would probably give it a try if you was there though. Next time near UK look me up.
+Jerry Diaz Well if you don't like them then don't get them! 😉 Sorry if I offended you, it was just a helpful suggestion 😇 I LOVE your videos FYI. And your hat ;)
Luan Elià Kouradiantes Sorry to hear that. But trust me it took some time for me to be able to do this and make it look easy. Keep trying. build some strength!
Man you gotta have balls of steel to do something like that. Maybe i'll try it on a small staircase with my new chair. My old one was way too heavy to even attempt.
I've been in a w/c almost 25 yrs now and that was impressive. I would only use that trick if my life depended on it. That's a lot of work. I'm getting too old for that shit. Just getting old. Uhg!
that's perfect execution, couldn't be done better.......I cant imagine trying to go up forward like this other guy is talking about........seems impossible
Thank you. Yea i seen a video of a guy going up forwards, but i dont know how that would be easier. I could of picked myself up all the way up like how i did on the last step, but i figured i'd do it the normal way. Just to get practice out of it.
This dude has some serious core strength,I'm proud of ya man.
stabilisedchaos It's more arm strength than core. but thanks for watching!
For the most part I'm not scared doing things in my wheelchair but going up stairs by yourself is insane. I give you mad props. I'm gonna have to try going up stairs by myself sometime. Thanks for showing how to do it
whats the worst that can happen lol go for it!
I've been a paraplegic for 13 years now and I have NEVER seen going up and down stairs this way! That was awesome!!!
DUDE! That's amazing. I've been in a chair for 29 years and i've never seen anything like this
Wow that's a long time rolling! Thanks for watching! Give it a try!

😌Thanks for watching!
+Jerry Diaz that was awesome and this is coming from a person that's in a wheelchair herself but I just got to say there is no possible way that I can do that I don't have that kind of strength that you do wow that's cool
Wow you must certainly have superior arm strength... Great video for encouragement. Thank you!
That was awesome, I can't wait too get my chair and began practicing. Thanks again, for your encouraging video's Jerry Diaz
Motivational speaker in the making. Thanks for the video and thanks to your camera girl.
Heck yeah man. I've been paralyzed for 6 yrs an have never seen or thought of tht.. I've road stairs flying down em.. thanks man this video has opened my eyes
Wow that takes a lot of strength. Thank you for sharing this!

Deonae Shackelford Jerry says it in his video nothing is impossible
Damn, your a positive person ! Love your ability to show us that we aren’t trapped in our chairs.
This is crazy impressive. I would break my face, legs and who knows what else trying to do this lol. Good stuff!
Amazing, what a wonderful "can-do" attitude. You will go far in life with that:)!
Much appreciated 🙏🙏 I look forward to!
Wow that is super impressive. I’ve gone down stairs before but I’ve never even considered going up them like that. You make it look so easy even though I’m sure it’s not.

Awesome!

How do you avoid getting so close to the rails that you find yourself unable to reach down to pull yourself up another step? That's actually my biggest problem doing this.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, not that I'll be doing similar with my power-chair anytime soon.
Lol power chairs are a bit heavier
Awesome I'm gonna have to try this! I can see where being strapped in would be a good idea! It'd suck to lose the chair at the top if you was by yourself!
WOW! You’re AMAZING, Man!!!
I'm thinking of steps I can go and climb. I have to try this....Thanks for posting...My Brother in the struggle. Peace

Could you climb a set of 'Walk&Roll Stairs' on your wheelchair?
What are those?
Do you have a video for going down stairs?
humorpotamus I literally show how to go down. Did you watch the video?
Sorry. I was busy trying to go up, I neglected to watch the rest of the video. It's hard. My bad. Thanks.
Backward down stairs terrified me. But you could carry more stuff, right?
Pretty good Jerry actually amazing I'm gonna try it cause I do have some pretty good upper body and arm strength...to tell you the truth I think I'm in better shape then before my accident
Great gob! Thank you for sharing!
MORE POWER TO YOU BROTHER ✊🏼💪

That takes a lot of strength!! Nice!
Your technique is really impressive (but then, so is your upper body strength). I'm surprised that coming down backwards like that doesn't rip the front castors off your chair (I've lost/broken a few ... doing mad moves). Thanks for a great vid.
Beautiful!! You are absolutely amazing..truly an inspiration! Thanks! :-)
Well done! I'm afraid one false move and a muscle spasm, I will be smiling down really fast! Now, you have a special made chair. Will this work with a standard Medicare Invacre wheelchair? The backs are much higger.

Holy shit you’re strong. I’m seriously impressed.
Thanks for watching!
I have t3 with a slight beer belly do you think I could make it some spasms ???
make it up? Idk That's up to you to try. You do need a good grip and a bit of arm strength.
Thanks a lot for this video. You’ve helped me take my mobility to a higher level! Peace & Love.
You're welcome. Thank's for watching!
You are amazing!!
🙏
You are one awesome dude! I'm in a chair an could never do that! Respect to the max!
Jerry, where did you get the straps for in front of your calves?
Came with my chair
But you can find it anywhere. It's just a velcro strap
It depends how paralyzed you are. I noticed some of the moves require lifting of the legs, so if you can still move at the hip joint, just not the knee or feet, you can still get up the stairs. Hey man can you do more video on you handcycle? Like modifications and stuff
I Apriecate everything your doing !
It ten years later that I’m watching this video and I’m wonder if you are still climbing those stairs.
like you said, a lot of strength, and on some stairs, steep ones, not possible. I recommend you try my method, hill-holders on the wheels. You already have the seat belt.
what is ''hill-holders?
Dear Jerry, I'm from Nepal and paraplegia by spinal injury could not move without wheelchair most of the wheelchair user could not run in plain road. Where you are climbing a set of stairs on your wheelchair are you sport person or to show all wheelchair users can climb stairs too ?

thank you very much for this video!!
Big ups!
🤜
Crap! I'm sure I couldn't do this and I'm not even in a chair. Nice Job!
Respect bro. 💯

Trevor
Thanks for watching! Coming down fast is fun!
In all honesty buddy i wouldn't make it up first step if not loose my nerve on second step if not loose all my strength on third. Big respects on all three, strangely would probably give it a try if you was there though. Next time near UK look me up.
I once tried to climb ONE step this way, i almost lost my arm... Good job man
lol how did you almost loose your arm???
It hurts lol
Thanks bro great tips
Thanks for watching! Hope I can help.
You should try bigger front casters
Why? I don't like them
+Jerry Diaz Well if you don't like them then don't get them! 😉
Sorry if I offended you, it was just a helpful suggestion 😇
I LOVE your videos FYI.
And your hat ;)
another great vid jerry!
Holy fuck dude. Nice job great hand strength. Hope I can do it someday. Thank for the inspiration.
@janaltus na there built to last ;) thanks for watching!
Totally insane strength
Robert W more will power than actual strength 😉
Wow! Great job!
Great job bro. Have you tried this going up forward instead of backwards? My therapist was teaching me this be with going forward.
Thanks, Na never tried it that way. Looks way to hard. The way i did it,wasnt to bad, after some practice.
I had to comment so admire you thanks fir the tips my mom probably won't be able to at 84 but I get it stay close to rail and I need a strap
Sweety, the last two scared me to death!
That my frends is rough but I commend him for doing it when I used a manual chair going down was SOOOOO much easier
This looks so easy 👀
I already tried it several times but it doesn't work :(
Luan Elià Kouradiantes Sorry to hear that. But trust me it took some time for me to be able to do this and make it look easy. Keep trying. build some strength!
I want 2 try bt I'm scared
good for you heavy props dude impressive
You make this look so easy
Kelly Fitzgerald Takes practice man lol
You are lucky young man! What would you do if your arms dont work any more?
That's awesome
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Buen trabajo
Cool Congrats.
