Her heart's in the right place, but she doesn't really seem to know what she's doing. The biggest thing I've noticed is that Charlie's ideas for redemption all involve basic goodness lessons like apologizing, roleplay, and these trust exercises, but never actually addresses anyone's individual sins, or really shows she understands how they happen, as seen by Angel's reaction to the roleplay. I put that down to her mostly being a sheltered royal, and as Husk describes it "A bleeding heart who wants to fix everyone else's problems except her own.
A caretaker through and through, it's her blessing and curse. :)
Damn, I’m starting to think you love Hazbin Hotel more than Vivzie does, lol…
She's aware of this flaw of hers, though, that's why she gets more confident only when other people join the Hotel staff. Vaggie gave her the confidence to start, but she's not really sure of herself until Alastor comes knocking and brings his merry brigade to help.
Charlie giving Vaggie the "duty" of the trust exercizes is exactly because she knows that's something she can't really grasp in a meaningful way, and she knows her gf would do a way better job than her 💞
Charlie is the embodiment of the “I have no idea what I am doing” meme - she can replace the dog with lab coat as the poster child for this!
And I think that's on purpose. As far as we know she's the first person in Hell to give redemption any weight. So there's no one to teach her, there's nothing for her to learn from, no past attempts (that we know of), no tried and true method for redemption in Hell. There's only the squalor of the sinners who suffer there and the knowledge they bring with them from earth.
And given how awful or hopeless everyone is in Hell, I doubt anyone would have given her more than crumbs (or anything at all) on how redemption works or what it is meant to do, if the sinners or demons knew any of that to begin with. She's quite literally inventing the wheel when it comes to redemption, not because she's the first to think about it, but because she's the first one to actually commit and earnestly seek to bring redemption to fruition.
Charlie's working with what she knows, which is very little, and she's the only one in Hell with the redemption initiative. She's going to have to learn on her own how this all works.
Also worth noticing: Charlie actually cheated in her excercise, she didn't share anything vulnerable about her. Everyone knows she loves everyone, it wasn't something personal to her. Which is probably the point, as we end up learning that Charlie has a tendency to suppress everything that makes her unconfortable.
what a 7 enneagram moment
@@PinkywinkykinkyLiearch? what anagram?
@@mapron1enneagram (wings) are a personality type thing
@@Kye9842 oh okay, sorry, learned it now, did not even thought it's not a typo. So nice when people genuinely and kindly respond.
Vivianne Medrano herself mentioned early on that Charlie is a flawed rehabilitator, she confirmed she doesn't have the proper tools to heal and reform sinners. So yup, this analysis is accurate!
It's pretty evidently a critique on people like her, bleeding hearts who want to help everybody, but for the wrong reasons.
I wonder if, as the seasons go along, Charlie learns better, proper empathy to understand sinners problems and how to deal with them, as opposed to how *she* would deal with them.
I mean I think Charlie wants to help people for valid reasons, getting people out of hell and into a utopian afterlife is hardly a bad reason to want to help people, and she's not doing it for like personal gain or anything. The issue is more what said at first that she doesn't really actually know *how* to heal people because she is so overly trusting and ignorant of the realities of what these people want and are like.
I thought her group therapy was hilariously crinjj. i mean in hell thats probably what they make you do. the hotel's exercises were a combination of the worst group exercises i've ever seen.
I don’t get how it’s for the wrong reasons ?
Well that’s true Charlie doesn’t understand what these sinners went through she’s never been put in there position
It makes sense, someone who knew what they were doing wouldn’t have a bar in rehab. But it really adds to her character, she’s kind, compassionate and helpful, but she doesn’t always know how to help.
Being ordered to be vulnerable in a military style is both relatable and hilarious for me. XD
haha
I also love how she goes into that the military exercise was a good idea
Have you ever read the Stormlight Archive? There's a line in the first book where an excessively serious military character is told to tell his men to go away and talk about something else instead of listening in on the main characters' conversation. This guy then turns to his men and tells them to "go and converse amongst yourselves in a lighthearted manner."
@@ceinwenchandler4716 I have actually! I will pick up that series again one day. It's a big time commitment. But awesome characters throughout.

After the finale I can’t wait for the Sir Pentious episode
Amen! 😂
Nux Pentious is the best character in the entire show, and I will take no statement to the contrary.
@@theanathema3062 is that a fellow egg boi I spy 🤔
@@kaileychambers6969 indeed it is, I live to serve our Boss, fellow egg boy.
Same here! OMG! He has been a game changer! And to think, Sir Pentious was originally going to be a one off villain. I'm so glad that he was kept around in such a meaningful way. ... Trying to avoid spoiling what happened for others is going to be a bugbear for me for a bit.
I'm glad you mentioned that trust falls are not easy! I've been pressured into doing trust falls before and people were really confused when I was too scared to do them. And people also didn't understand that, due to my social anxiety, verbally and politely opting out is really hard for me and I kind of just go nonverbal instead. It's also really refreshing to see you talk about how, in these group settings, forcing people to share only makes them feel more uncomfortable. Going through school I was put in a lot of those situations and it made my "shyness" worse. Now that I can freely participate or not participate in these things with my friends, I'm much more talkative with them.
So nice you have those you trust around you and they will not pressure you to do what you dont want to. Thank you for sharing I dont think many realize
It makes you realize that people who don't feel this kind of introversion often have a hard time understanding what it's like. Most people only see their own perspective and don't understand when someone doesn't share it.
As an autistic person who has social anxiety comorbid with it; So many people just start acting weird if I keep refusing to do trust falls. Like, I'm fat, a goth and and traumatized to heck and back as well (there might even be some undiagnosed C-PTSD in there somewhere, lol), so I generally can't help but feel like that other person is going to absolutely drop me like a brick the moment I as much as lean back. And just saying; I'm oversensitive to pain thanks to my autism, so inevitably plummeting to the floor would sting a little extra in my case. And the people leading those exercises always get weirdly pushy with me every time I get forced to attend one of those things; I often have to actively say no like 5 or 6 times at the very least (I always stay polite, though), and even then they keep pushing to turn that no into a yes. I swear, it's like those people have one functioning brain cell... Like, how am I even supposed to remotely trust anyone in that room if the person leading that exercise won't even respect my boundaries on that one? It's such an oxymoron.
@@melaniescribbles I hear ya there. It's like they don't understand this is still a thing that should only be done with consent.
Yea, I love Charlie because she wants so badly to help people heal, but with her background it's difficult for her to do so. She's never had to heal so she doesn't REALLY understand what's required to do so. Her lesson plans are all about being nice. Sometimes in therapy nice just doesn't cut it.
What doesn't help either is that she's having to do this within a very short time table that's been cut in half unexpectedly, so she's that much sloppier and desperate to come up with anything that would work. I adore Charlie as well, but I agree, and she definitely has her work cut out for her.
My theory is that ultimately, Charlie won't achieve her goals via therapy "techniques" but by simply creating a safe space in Hell that is an escape from the rat race. Where people can be free (or at least temporarily escape) the pressures and exploitation of being in such a hostile environment, to be themselves, find themselves, and form real bonds with people. Hopefully that's how it'll play out in season 2, especially if Charlie can demonstrate that by protecting Angel from Valentino.
It's already happening. Her exercises don't really help, but the safe space and positive environment of the hotel has inspired change. I feel like a thing you go through with bad mental health is the belief that it won't ever be better and nothing will fix it, so you enter a self fulfilling prophecy. In this case, none of them believe in redemption when they're asked. However, they've been subconsciously infected by Charlie's hopeful attitude anyway and are 'entertaining' her dreams like Vaggie does. They're also just becoming better people, because the friendships they've made signify that you can make the most out of a bad situation and be happy.
I do think Charlie will eventually get a wake up call though. There's no way she goes through this whole show not knowing that her ideas won't work. At that point, someone at the hotel will just tell her.
I support this theory. Though I don't think ultimate success will be quick enough to happen as early as season 2.
I support this! I think this is why their efforts succeeded in the finale. Trying not to spoil but that particular person just needed a welcoming environment. Others, like Angel, have much deeper problems.
@@forumkitty hear hear!
I also think Husker is going to be important in actually redeeming people: Charlie gives them a safe space and constantly trusting, while Husk meets them where they are and doesn't judge them.
Notice that Angel says something provocative because that's his defense: what Husk calls Angel "being fake."
I was part of a trust fall exercise in high school. I stood up and closed my eyes a little early, and a smaller, younger boy pushed me before anyone else knew what was happening. I crashed like a falling tree onto a chair and a concrete floor. The older students running the room seemed eager to forget it happened.
That’s definitely not okay they should have taken you to the nurse at minimum and the person who pushed you a detention
I think trust exercises have no place in public school, it just gives kids a chance to be cruel and break trust
Obviously you already want to do Pentious and Angel, but I would absolutely love it if you talked about both Husk and Lucifer.
Husk to break down his character, and Lucifer about his depression, his distance from Charlie, and taking that step towards rekindling that relationship.
Both are absolutely wonderful. So I’d love to hear what you would say on them!
I may be doing each person so you may get your wish

@@AllyInReality we don't know enough nifty yet, we have to wait for season 2. I'll go as far as to say we don't know enough about Alastor either, mostly because most of the fan base seems to veiw Alastor the way Charlie does, rather than the way he's written.
@@AllyInReality she’s already done Alastor, and I’m curious to see how she would respond to Nifty. Maybe Sera as well, but she may not have enough information on her until season 2. Emily she could probably talk about “having a strong moral compass, and standing up for what you believe in, even if it’s in opposition to someone you’re close to (i.e. her views vs Sera’s perspective).

@@thesaltybeard1793 Ahhhhhh
Charlie has almost no baseline let’s be honest. Her dad seems ok as a person (aside from being a bit of an absent deadbeat, and his depression) and her mom was probably a decent person/parent growing up… but Charlie is otherwise surrounded by the worst of the worst. She has not adequately seen stable thinking and dynamics from her population, it’s no wonder she doesn’t understand the nuances of therapy and change, she has seen absolutely none of it. But you have to walk before you can run, Charlie is a pioneer as far as hell is concerned, and they almost always stumble and get things wrong before finding their footing. She stumbled hard at several points but still managed to bring together a strong bond between her friend group and inspire others and helped them to live happier and more honest. God I love this show
I think this episode does a great job of showing how Charlie and Vaggie, despite good intentions, don't really know what they are doing, but also shows how the group improve over time.
More than anything, what helps the guests reform is being in a safe area, with people who care about them. That may not sound like much, but in an environment where gang wars, harassment and exploitation are "just another day", it can mean so much.
Also, super looking forward to the Angel Dust episode, and hoping to see some stuff on Pentious. And Lucifer. And maybe Helluva Boss
The funny thing about Vaggie's approach is that it resonated hard with me. Living the Navy life and lemme tell you the kind of trauma bond(s) that comes from that is crazy. Some guys you would never have talked to before suddenly are your best friends.
I had a bad time in school being 'forced' to do trust exercises in primary school, the teacher didn't care that the other kids let me fall over; they were more annoyed that I refused to participate as a result.
I had somewhat similar experiences, we had to do the trust fall but I didn't get to do it since no one volunteered to catch me. that felt really bad being the only one not doing it. the teacher just ignored it and moved on.
I feel like your teachers needed to pay more attention to why you didn't want to participate
I HATE trust falls. Trust is earned and if I don't have it I'll happily opt out, but I have that personality that not only like to be excluded but gets a sense of pride from doing so. With social anxiety I could see it being a nightmare.

Charlie really is an idealist through and through. Wanting the best for others and wishing on a star that good intentions will win the day. That's why we love her 😊
So...does that mean in an alternate universe Star from Wish could have visited Charlie? 😆
Charlie is trusting to the point of hubris. She's practically asking Vivze to write another character betraying her so she can see how excessivly trusting and sheltered she is and understand other prople's perspectives. People who, in so many cases, like Angel's, need lots of time and understanding before they can let other people in.
I bet you could rake in views with the psychoanalysis of Lucifer, Adam, Lute, Sera and possibly Lilith when they flesh out her character!
Apparently she's hoping to cover everyone, and I'm SO EXCITED!
Had to do trust falls in school yhea teachers paired victems with there bullies. Teacher was very angry that most of us came back with injuries and punished all of us. Trust went inro the negative that day
Teacher obviously needed to pay more attention to the social dynamics of the class to know that was a terrible idea
This is why Charlie needs to enlist the help of a therapist, so the others (and herself) can unpack their issues and feelings in a safe and proper manner so they can truly be redeemed and grow as people
Unfortunately, I don't think there are many therapists in
@@maxixe3143 Agreed.
@@maxixe3143 There's Alucard
Its very interesting in the scene where Husk yelling at Angel explains as a bartender he knows everyone's problems it comes off like the creator of the show just outright explaining everyone's issues. And the biggest problem may well be Charlie. In that she is avoidant to her issues with her position and power. She keeps trying to overwhelm everyone with her positivity and her need for empathy. SHe wants to connect to everyone. But because she was raised as a literal sheltered princess she doesn't have the same experiences to connect with. She wants to be the one breaking down people's barriers but she doesn't have the tools to do it.
But she does have something that everyone there needs. Sanctuary. She has the power and position to provide people the space they need and the community with others that can relate to them. She will eventually grow to be able to better connect with people. But she needs to deal with her own issues first and turn that into the ability to protect people so they can work out their issues with those who can relate.
We need a video about Angel and Husk, especially the song Loser and why it was properly the only way to actually cheer Angel up :3

8:17 this is very true! I used to work in an animal shelter in a very unwealthy county. Animals outnumbered kennel staff 80 to 1, we weren’t able to give animals the care they deserved, just food, water, and a single 10 minute walk each. Despite our efforts promoting adoptions and giving up days off to save these animals, the community continued to leave more animals in our care. The environment was depressing and dangerous, and it was there where I’ve forged the strongest bonds in my life. After a hard week at work we would have a drink together and talk through what we’ve been though. Sure, some coworkers were duds, but some of them are the most amazing, hardworking, selfless people I’ve ever met

If you're Autistic and get Autism vibes, it's usually right.
For example fans of Everything's Gonna to be Okay, wondered if Josh Thomas(Creator/Star) is Autistic too. He got evaluated and the specialist doing the evaluation agreed with those fans.
Another example is that my wife and I are Autistic and Josh Thomas reminded us of an Autistic friend, that we met in different group therapy sessions.

I personally feel he's very insecure in his own power and hates not being the strongest in the room which I feel not alot of people pick up on! He got really annoyed when Carmilla expressed how she didn't care about his absence and IMMEDIATELY disliked Lucifer! In the recent episode too he vastly overestimated himself. I dint think it's a matter of him thinking others are lower but more that he's higher so when that isn't the case he feels not in control anymore and will do his best to stay on top of the situation. Which in lucifers case was to beat him emotionally rather than physically
@@GeorgiaDow I imagine you'll have a lot to cover since the show has concluded season 1.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I LOVE THE MATCHING OUTFIT AND DEDICATION
It's a shame that the show's pacing is as wild as it is, because it would've been amazing to have a lot more episodes showing Charlie getting a better grasp of how to actually rehabilitate these people. Some trial and error, her coming into techniques that she can safely repeat with future guests.
I'm guessing that was a stipulation from Amazon, because it was a risk and they were not sure if they were going to make more seasons until they saw how it was received

after the finale i think sir pentious and adam would make great topics for videos
I could honestly watch an analysis of every one of these characters
It's interesting that Vaggie somehow made the group trust each other more through her military exercise, even though she probably did not know exactly why, and I see herself having a hard time trusting people in general. I wonder how her time in the exorcist angelic army affects her hard-shelled personality. Please do a Vaggie analysis video!
Omg please discuss Niffty! She's my favorite! She is certainly extremely comfortable in her own skin.
I'm surprised you didn't comment on Vaggie's line of "Catch him or I'll hurt you"

However,in Charlie's defense, I don't think modern psychology books are available to her. She IS doing her best, however, I agree that she needs to be better
Why not? The have TV and smartphones. It stands to reason modern psychology books would be available too.
Might be an odd request but can you break down Angel and Valentinos abusive relationship? Ways to identify an abuser like Valentino.
7:25 we had a similar excerize in school though it was anonymous & on a paper. I'm like Charlie & overshare but as a result I put something really heavy down & nobody knew how to respond. It was a little digging bc it was ask your peers for help. But I'm certain they changed how they went about it next class. I've only recently gotten better about understanding what others are comfortable with.
Okay but are ya gonna do an episode on Niffty the chaos gremlin? I love her but holy shit 😂
I would 100% play a character like her if I was a voice actor. She is so much fun!
Great analysis as always and cosplay
Okay, so how did you have an outfit that is nearly a perfect match? Once again, your wardrobe astonishes me.
I only ever known practical reasons to have secrets. Like, security and stuff. Personal reasons...I never understood. Do I lack the emotion needed? It is hard for me to understand what I am missing that does not allow me to understand why personal secrets exist.
Well maybe you have a friend who you are trying to protect their reputation. Like they did something that people are strongly biased against and would judge them as being a horrible person but you know they're not and it was a one time mistake.
I learn best from specific examples so hopefully this helps
This also kind of mirrors the B plot with Alastor. He's meeting with an established group of people he's known for a long time, vulnerabilities are shared, and different levels of 'trust' are explored. His venture is more negative in relations, while Charlie's and Vaggie's grow positive despite not really knowing what they are doing.
If we look closely, we'll see "everyone" reach to carry Sir Pentious, even Nifty.
And that's the sweetest thing to see they accepted him or at least didn't wanna let him just free fall to the ground even though he requested it.
I woudln't say Charlie goes into everything thinking everyone will love her, she is well aware that most of hell thinks shes a joke.
We did trust falls in my high school theatre class in the 2000s. We didn't share anything, nor do it off of the stage (that is insanely dangerous), but we did fall backwards from standing and catch each other. It was a lesson to physically show the importance of working together and trusting each other while performing together.
Remember group therapy can make things worse...like making the group to be family orientated. Group therapy is NOT for creating a family.
Also definitely agree that those trust exercises have always looked bogus, and wouldn't be surprised if they appear so much in pop culture because of how sketchy they seem (or to make an easy writing transition of characters starting to trust each other). They aren't disability-safe (both for the person falling and those catching them) because there's no guarantee that the person doing the catching has the best arm strength to do so, and even if they are able to, that doesn't always mean someone is trustworthy.
Catching someone from falling isn't the same as trusting someone/being vulnerable enough to have a close relationship.
I would trust most people to catch me in a trust fall situation, that has little to do with real trust. On the other hand I don't know if I could lean back like that after a certain point my body will try to catch itself.
@@rachelryan84 Yeah. I did - tried to do - a trust fall once. I couldn't do it. It's like not blinking when someone throws something at your face. It wasn't that I didn't trust the guy - he absolutely would and could have caught me. I just physically could not shove past my reflexes and avoid catching myself before I really lost my balance.
After the first season finale, I kinda feel like Lute might have enough material for her own video, and _definitely_ Alastor. That buck is a _mess._
I love it that what actually helped the group was not the 'typical' trust exercises but something more risky which actually fit the group more and their characters and that at the end they were able to open up and talk about the experience which created a bond between them

It’s called trauma bonding old army special
As someone who was dropped during a trust fall and hit their head against concrete at 8 years old, don't do trust falls guys lmao
Another thing that strikes me as potentially problematic about trust falls is just physical ability. I’ve got scoliosis and fibro and I’m watching this in a flareup that has been going on for a few weeks. A trust fall would really hurt me right now, even if someone caught me perfectly. I don’t know if I’d be able to catch someone either, when I feel physically weak and catching someone successfully would also probably hurt me. Opting out would be awkward because I’d have to draw attention to that previously invisible disability. Even without that, I’m a short and scrawny guy who is self conscious about those things. I’d imagine a heavier person might be self conscious for completely different reasons. Wheelchair users might be totally unable to participate even if they wanted to. Those with limb differences might also have issues catching people. There’s just so many ways for it to backfire.
Kinda would like to see a video dedicated to Lute, because I do think that she is rather different even compared to the other exorcist angels, like she gets so violent to the point where even Adam has to be like "uhhh ok, take it a step down", and I think this could be interesting? like idk just her hatred of sinners and vaggie specifically is kinda odd? like the other exorcists seem to just be doing their jobs but Lute seems like she is also doing it for her own personal reasons
Maybe after s2. They haven't really given much depth to her just yet, so any judgement would be purely speculative
In season 1 Husk sums up Vaggie as "she's judgmental of everyone because she hates herself"; I get the vibe that with Lute it's going to be something similar.
And with Vaggie and Lute having a similar background of angelic military, part of that way of thinking could have been molded in that shared environment- one that might enable overly high standards for one's self and a tendency to project one's own undesirable qualities on the "other" as self-defense.
In short, Lute seems the prime candidate for exploring something that's close to internalized homophobia.
So * check notes * drag my friends to a gang war GOT IT!!!!

Imagine a break down of Alastor or Lucifer
I wouldn't be surprised if some time in the future - either because of a time-skip or a natural progression after heaven finally gets behind redemption/the hotel - some other characters help Charlie set up a better regulation and rehabilitation system to help redeem sinners better (like either help from Emily or some angels that volunteer to help).

Honestly, I kind of like how bad Charlie is at this whole rehabilitation thing. It drives home that she comes from an entirely different world (literally) than others, so she's naive and does foolish things because she just assumes that's what's needed.
She's not a trained professional. She's not qualified to do these things. So of course it's not going to go smoothly. Here's hoping she can learn and improve in the future.
Even better than trust falls...surprise trust falls. Just walk up to your friends, yell "Surprise trust fall." then just turn around and trust them to catch you. It hilarious
“YAY PAIN!!!”
Nifty… I think that you should get therapy. Considering the other things you done.
Surprising no one, a hell-born demon might not have the experience to give therapy.
lol
8:10 This right here. Once during summer camp, our group had climbed up this alpine tower (I think that's what it was called), and I had a real hard time getting back down since I had to jump off and trust that the harness would keep me safe. It took the guy who had climbed up with me, a fellow camper who was basically the big teddy bear of the group, it took him physically helping me through it, with my consent, in order for me to finally let go and be lowered down. I have no problem heights, had no problems with climbing trees, on roofs, and other tall places, and even jumping down onto my Mom's bed before, but something about that experience was the exception. Perhaps it was just because of HOW high it was, or maybe the rope, or the wind rocking the structure.
But I most certainly know that it's the feeling of falling that's what gets me, since I have a crippling phobia of anything rollercoasters and other theme park rides, even the baby ones. I DON'T like the motions, I HATE the feeling of being upside down (linked to something from my childhood), and I DON'T like the feeling of nearly being launched into space.
Honestly I wish I had a therapist like you when when I was younger because I don't trust therapists because mine revealed my trauma without my knowledge or conent I said I was a child back then find me incredibly distrustful of any mental health professional in my therapist wasn't a good person they said a lot of horrible things about me 😅
I did a trust fall once. The girls dropped me. I don't think it was on purpose even though they bullied me but they certainly weren't paying attention.
Tsk tsk! You didn't even give give Angel Dust's idea a chance!
Can you please do one on Alastor? Please? Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease? I’m sure Alastor would LOVE to hear the theories ❤
We did the trust falls thing back in middle school, half the kids just stumbled backwards because the other kids thought it was funny to not catch them.
The moral of the story is do not give teenagers an easy way to hurt each other and expect them not to take full advantage of the opportunity, those hormones make you a vicious little bastards.
I'm seconding the request for Cheri Bomb content especially is you consider the Addict music video too.
I know you mentioned an Angel Dust video, I’m assuming your doing episode 4? Because that would be a good video, though maybe put a trigger warning notice at the beginning for SA.
yes its happening
can you give any insight into what Nifty's Deal is.... assuming we don't take her behavior as just a comedic set piece
Honestly, I have an easier time falling when I there is no one who's supposed to catch me, like in a death scene in a play where the only thing to catch me is the stage itself, then I doing qvtrust fall because I'm expecting someone to catch me but I'm scared they won't
I used to have a boyfriend in highschool who would try to make me do trust falls, hated doing them.
He turned out to be the least trustworthy person I could think of ironically.
Trauma bonding is very effective in the short term. Like, you can say that for it, even if you can’t say anything else. At least Sir Pentious is part of the gang now.
Angle was just going to say popsicles. Why couldn't you show that? 😂😂
