Indeed. And I think Eric might be looking for ticks where there are none because, while I am not Indian and cannot speak to what Indian people feel about his portrayal: I do know that the actor himself, Kunal Nayyar, said in interview that doing the Bollywood dance number was not only fun for him but also a point of pride to be able to bring a part of his own culture to the show (Actress Melissa Rauch, aka Bernadette, also was thrilled to have been included in the number)

And while most of the jokes about him being Indian I find funny, I was kinda cringing throughout this whole sequence. The dance scene is my FAVORITE!!! It’s awesome and hilarious!! Love it! 🥰 You seriously need to lighten up. Not everything is racist. Some things are just funny and Raj is a very funny character.
Have to say that I have never thought of Raj as a someone who was expected, by the creators, to be viewed as a typical Indian. I always thought the whole point of the show is that these four guys are incredibly out of step with the rest of the world. They make great efforts to join the herd, but just aren’t built that way. Raj has a definite melodramatic flair that goes overboard on a number occasions. I just assumed that the dance number was Bollywood as seen through Raj’s dramatic and romantic mind. All of the scenarios that he imagines are unrealistic and ridiculous. As for all the Indian and Hindu jokes in the series, I had felt that everyone’s background, religion, and family was joked about pretty fairly. I may have been wrong about that and may need to give it some more thought. After reading a few comments here, I started remembering a few times that I was a bit offended at the way Sheldon’s Mom is depicted. As a white woman from Texas, I didn’t really care for people getting the idea that all Texans have her opinions. It’s tough to know what people will see as typical and what will been seen as unique to the character. To sum up, I loved the Bollywood dance, I love Raj, and I love the guy in the dance number who does the back flip! Great reaction to the show and I can’t wait for more!
Yeah, Sheldon definitely vented in this episode and Penny had no idea. This episode was the beginning of Sheldon road to recovery, it's a long road but you'll see his transition. As usual, Amy was actually the only supportive friend to make him feel better and his friends just mocked him. That says a lot, I understand they felt like he needed as a taste of his medicine but for geniuses, they couldn't sense that Sheldon just needed help. Also, Raj is a cold piece of work. I understand he's lonely and have selective mutism but fantasizing about his friend gf was a low blow lol. In this season, Raj caught it bad and that's all I'm saying.
I mean... how does one handle their friend suddenly regressing to a child and channeling his mother right in front of her? I feel like Penny would need to have some therapy training to really handle that breakdown (and not Beverly Hofstadter's form of therapy), so calling his mom was the right decision. But I do love how Amy is able to relate to Sheldon in a way that many of the other characters can't, while Penny is able to get him out of his shell.
@@poluticon yeahhhh not me. Where I'm from that's crossing the line. If anything, I would ask my friend gf to hook me up with one of her friends, cousins, or something. But you do have guys that visualize about their friends gf, but not me.
@@kateorgera5907 oh yeah most definitely. I'm saying by Sheldon having a breakdown about being taken away because he's different from everybody says a lot. It was kinda his cry for help. Due to the fact that Penny wasn't a genius or therapist, it was complicated to see where Sheldon was going with that. To her, it was just him being unusual again. The only time, Sheldon vented about his past to his other friends was the episode in season 3, where Penny and Leonard kept arguing, and he had a breakdown in the comic book store, due to PTSD. Amy and Bernadette are the only two people that understand his situation due to being biologists. But Amy most definitely understands him, that's why she's perfect for him.
Well the dance number was somewhat like bollywood but it was way too exaggerated. Raj is certainly a stereotype and as an Indian I don't really mind it. it was definitely a bit cringe but overtime I have started to find it a bit fun. I don't think it is racist at all though as all the characters are stereotypes and its all good fun most of the times.
they had a Bollywood choreographer come in to create the number, but she did also make sure that Kunal and Melissa went extra on the number, because after all, this is supposed to be in Raj's imagination.

It's called cringe humor. The Bollywood dance scene is funny *because* we know that it is so over the top - same way that they exaggerate the guys' obsession with comics & nerd culture, Sheldon's lack of social skills & Penny's starving actress persona. If it was all realistic & all of the characters were well-balanced, it wouldn't be funny. Woah! Slight epiphany here, so bear with me.... ;) Have you noticed that comedy on TV & film has really taken a major hit in the past 7 years or so? PC culture has robbed us of the ability to laugh at ourselves and connect with each other by uniting around the commonalities we share. Instead of being able to acknowledge our own flaws and laugh at ourselves with one another - which helps us communicate and keeps us humble, the media & modern culture have taught us that we can ignore our own flaws and feel secure in our own self-worth as long as we are not as bad as the people on the "other side". So instead of laughing WITH each other, and learning about ourselves and connecting, we, as a society now laugh AT each other, mocking the "others" in a misguided attempt to "improve the world" by reminding ourselves of our own moral superiority. And if we are the "good ones," and they are the "bad ones", then somehow we are justified in shaming them, judging them & ignoring their voices. Because we know better. And in our quest to do what others tell us is right, we have forgotten how to think for ourselves. We have isolated ourselves from the people that can challenge us and help us grow. And so, we have become less self-aware & feel even more afraid and alone. Here's to hoping that we, first as individuals and then as a society, can remember that we are all individuals with worth. That we can talk with each other, think and question, and rediscover that we are more nuanced human beings with more in common than the media is telling us. Most of us are not extreme. We do not have to take sides. The tide is turning, I'm hoping that as a society, we will turn our focus onto individuals instead of groups and laugh together rather than shaming and judging each other.
