I always thought there was something magical about a squier strat, i think its because they just are what they are and you love them and play expressively because it responds to what you want to do with them and they have a special place in my heart
@@thedavesimpson hey dave wonderful video and great playing. Are squire affinity strats a good second electric guitar for the long term let's say 10 plus years because I've had my artist brand stratocaster has a bend in the neck or would I be best getting a classic vibe strat. BTW you make thing sound like a Mexican strat. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍
Picked up a CY98 sunburst last week for very little money, what an absolute gem! 1 and three quarter inch body, very well made guitar. Swapped out the tuners which were shot, gave it a new bone nut and strings, set it up and wow, its awesome :)
michael gratton yes it is true he gots the sound in his hands with some real talent but ... for playing that good every talented guy has to precise a lot every day ... then sure if you dont have that music soul and ear you cant arrive where he is arriving ... but ... every one of us can play and get his personal music world
Blackwolfgang70 I completely agree with you no one ever just picked up a guitar and played like a virtuoso, Dave Simpson will have spent thousands of hours practising to get where he is at this point in time.
michael gratton yes he did of course. and practising and playing for a musician is a really nice joy and nice challenge ... i always remember all my guitars stydying days with nostalgia ... and i still study a lot because i always feel like a beginnner and this is the first big improve on playing guitar ... umilty approach :)
I've got a 98 Squier Affinity and I love it. It was my first guitar and I'd never get rid of it. I've had maybe 8 or 9 guitars over the years and I've still played it the most. I love my others but this one is special. It fits like a glove, probably because I learned to play on it. Lol
Recently picked up a black 98 squier affinity with small headstock like this, and a 2009 FSR affinity also with small headstock. Do a search and surprise, theres Dave rippin on one. Love these old vids. I always come back just to hear you playing some covers again
Fantastic video mate! My dad just bought me the same guitar. He found it in a charity shop at ridiculous low price and it is as you say an amazing guitar...l just love it. I checked the serial number and it is a 1998 Affinity and to me it sounds better than my Fender Mexico Strat!
I have a '98 Affinity in black with a maple neck and black pick guard. These guitars are real gems. Full thickness solid bodies, bigger pots, small headstock, etc. Basically a full on Strat with the Affinity badge. And they do sound sweet!
bought my first ever electric guitar last year, and thanks to this video it was an affinity strat (HSS with a black pickguard which makes it look really SRVish) and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made
Dave you truly love John f. Playing...did I tell you that I saw and met the RHCP in 1984...I'm pretty sure they still had the first guitarist who was an excellent player who died of a overdose....this was 1984-85 they came on the stage with only socks hanging from their privates...what a show!!!
Bro 90s squiers are awesome. Second, check out the gear he’s using. It does kinda matter… and Dave is like my hero so yeah. Not shitting on him at ALL.
Dave Simpson ! I could have lied is top 4 RHCP for me ! Thank you!! Faves are --Scar tissue, Under the Bridge, Soul To Squeeze, & then I could have lied! What about you Dave?? Please?
Hi mate!! Just bought a the same guitar sunburst but YN1997. Absolutely agree with you. Amazing years for squier strat YN 5,6,7,8,s I had 4 in my lifetime and everyone of them sounded and played perfectly! Btw loved you guitar playing and your hand vibrato is sweet as mate. 😎✌
Sounds great! I use a Squire strat for playing RHCP myself. They feel great, I plan on putting Seymour Duncan SSL1's in mine. The current pickups are okay for factory model, but I love the ssl1 sound
TylerLarsonThe ShredGod That's why I want them! Also I think it'd be cool to mess with different effects with them since John can pull it off. Especially on Throw Away Your Television, there's something out of this world going on with these pickups
Is that an affinity strat? fender produced VERY few in that color during 97-98. The catalogs from that era show black, red and white. I estimate there were only about 50 made. Who knows how many survived. This is an incredibly rare guitar - the body and neck were made in the USA. In fact, they are the same body and neck that are on the USA models from that year - alder body, thick slab of rosewood on the neck, full size pots, metal switch, full width nut - amazing guitar you have! Never let that thing go. It’s a piece of Squier history.
I have Affinity YN725242, this is 1997, in sunburst. I remember I could choose from 2 pcs, every in another shop in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The thick alder body is something I have not seen on other Affinity strats.
That’s so cool. Found your Chanel about 2 weeks ago and have just my first ever strat. I wanted a sunburst one kinda like John Frusciante and I am not kidding the one I bought was a used 1998 strat. The completely same as yours
sounds ace simmo . lets be honest it sounds as good as way more expensive strats , the necks are stellar too . , an affinity is all you need .you could record and tour with an affinity no sweat. something magic about em . the strat i had was indonesian it was a superb guitar. . i should dnt have let it go. .
I have an affinity strat sitting on the wall with a poorly cut nut so the high E-string always pops out when hitting it too hard, the frets were really uneven from the get go so the action has to be quite high, it goes out of tune all the time and the tuners don't respond very well so tuning it up to pitch again is a hassle. I don't play it at all anymore because of the issue but basically I think it's a hit and miss with squiers. You really have to try them out before because there are a lot out there that are quite bad but for each bad one there is one that can probably easily keep up with more expensive guitars.
My first ever guitar Dave, quite possibly the same model year, I forget as I've since worn off the serial number. My dad got it from Argos when I was 19 and I specifically requested sunburst. 20 odd years down the road and it's now up to '68 spec, a jumble of USA electronics, mismatched hardware and a Nitro Sonic Blue relic. And it's still my favourite guitar, We can do no wrong by each other. Really fascinating and in depth videos mate, you're quite fond of guitars aren't you?
I had a lefty one, IDENTICAL to this, but years back, I took it apart and the body and neck are now a kurt cobain vandalism strat replica, and the hardware and electronics are now part of a billie joe 'blue' replica lol
Hi Dave!! This guitar really sounds awesome, and it's just one year younger than me hahaha And is a little bit weird seeing a Squier Affinity with the small headstock, but i do prefer it. Thanks for the awesome video, you're the best!!!
I have what I believe to be a 97 . Bought it brand new just cause it played so well. Now has hot rails bridge and neck pups. Does a great Dave Murray . The newer ones don't seem to play anywhere near as good.
I always love you play Dani California and rip into the chorus and guitar solo. Much love from Australia. Would have loved to donate towards your 62 strat, but I'm a poor Uni student. You actually played "Run to You" by Bryan Adams. Nice touch.
My first Strat was a black with a white pickguard Squire that had a Lace Gold pickup in the middle position, but that guitar was stolen as well as my second Strat which was a Mexican Strat with Tex-Mex pickups, and a wonderful 3-tone sunburst. I still have my 3rd strat I bought, and American Strat, which just so happened to be the 2006 60th Anniversary model.
B'ful guitar! My first was a Squier Bullet. Dig your affinity with the normal headstock - the current run has the 70's large headstock. Keep playing the cool riffs and solos \m/
I have a 99 squire affinity strat in Torino red, amazing guitar was jamming bad penny (Rory Gallagher) on it earlier sounded rockin.. love the squiers from this era
Man. I love my Classic Vibe 60s.your Affinty looks so close. It has the tortoise PG on it with mighty mite alnico 5s but I want to put my mint green on it. Then I'd need cream covers. The mighty mites are black. Haha all good. I'll see how it goes because the mint green needs to come of my Fsr gilmour vibe standard MIM. Back to its original black one....Good times to come. I'll upload to channel. My first pg swap heheh.
Hey I just joined this week and I have got to say that you are an amazing guitarist and btw I have the same guitar with a bridge pickup and it sounds equivalent to a strat to me.
I’ve got a I think 96 Squire affinity same as yours apart from mine being left-handed I’ve had it from new I absolutely love it, I have replaced it a few times but always going back as it’s a better guitar even the thickness of the body is the same as the fender version and has a beautiful sound it’s better than the new squires, and made it Taiwan
Awesome dave! I just picked up a 1995 mim strat today. It still had the plastic film on the pick guard!!! Its white with a rosewood fretboard. My first strat!!!
If had to rate my top 5 favorite guitarists 1. John Frusciante/Dave Simpson 2. Adam Jones 3. Dean Deleo 4. Tom Morello 5. Jerry Cantrell I suppose it came to six but John and Dave are very much tied :)
Always great to watch your videos and see/hear you play. Have you made a video of how you capture, say a loop of chords that you then play lead over the top, with a click of a switch?
Hi, I have a 96 korea Stratocaster squier with the golden squier logo on the palette and, serial number CN6 ... can you tell me the body of which wood it is made of (alder-ash) and of solid wood or in laminated layers? thanks
What colour pickguard is that ? is that parchment ? it looks nice and I have the same guitar except in classic vibe, ( the sunburst with rosewood board)
How do that thing feel? I'm planning to buy a vintage strat and I found some interesting made in japan Fender stratocaster the model is ST-62 it's a 62 reissue it looks interesting so I want your opinion. Can you tell me some great sounding, vintage looking stratocasters around 600-800 $. I'm new into fender I've been more of a epiphone/gibson guy but about a month ago I bought something I still can't believe, a 1967 Fender Bronco, I bought it for 50 $ from a guy who found it in his attic and thought it was only a old guitar, it's fretboard needs to be changed and the body and pickguard needs to be repainted in the original fiesta red with white pickguard that guy painted it all black. After I change the fretboard and repaint it I would like to buy a strat so if you can tell me some great stratocaster models that would help me a lot.
"SNAP" ! ... except 'mine' is a Squier BulletStrat HSS (only have the 'one' 100% electric 'Goodie') and am a happy chappie 🤗 ... Hope you kept yours ? ...☘...
I love how after Under the Bridge you just looked down at the Squier like, "I can't believe that sound comes from this beauty!" 9:55 Happy to see you jam that one!
Just found myself a 1996 Yako made squier, the neck plate has a serial number on it which is reassuring but i was wondering if yours has a serial stamped on the back of the headstock? if not i guess the taiwanese just stamp the plates.
Ha You're a character. I was just looking at a 98 at the thrift store, in red. thinking about it.... It's not the affinity or wtvr. The finish is starting to check, which is interesting. Peace.
goddammit boy. im bout to go find a used squire on facebook marketplace. hahahaha. EXCELLENT video. Ive been a HUGE Chili peppers fan since i was in the 2nd grade back in 1996 and this video just made my day brother.
Nevermind , I watched the rest of the video where you say the pickguard is white gone cream.what are you using for distortion in this at the start ? it sounds great. if its the zoom g2.1u can you give out settings ?
Been thinking about getting a Squire. Honest answer please, should I get one, or wait a bit and buy a Fender? Have heard good report about the Squire Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster. Love the rock star jib when your playing lead. We all do that lmao
Cheers Dave, made the mistake of buying last years Gibson Flying V - www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2016/USA/Flying-V.aspx. Have had nothing but issues, even got it replaced by Gibson. Whomever reads this, DO NOT BY A GIBSON ONLINE. Try before you buy.
Hello Dave great video and channel. Could you maybe do a video on don't forget me? Going through the key and scales etc to allow for jamming and creating solos? There are don't forget me backing tracks on RUclips which play over but would love to know the scales etc
Hi guys, I consider myself an intermediate to beginner player and am learning through lick library video tutorials and not by ear. They used a capo to play the opening riff of under the bridge. I think that may or may not be what John Frusciante did. So I was just wondering how does John Frusciante play that riff? With a capo or without? Dave here learned it the hard way. By ear, and also without a capo. Regardless of how to play it, it is definitely easier with a capo. But I don't mean to undermine Dave, kudos to Dave for his efforts. I should seriously start to try and learn songs by ear. Great video, looking forward to the next one.
Siddharth Karunakaran John didn't use a capo. I certainly do not. With a capo is easier on the fingers, but if you develop strenght as a by-product of playing that intro it may come handy in the future...
Surprised this Squier strat neck has 22 frets must be a rare one, not many has the 22 frets usually it's 21 frets for the imports brand unless it's current production
hi ya ... following more your videos lately .. how a squier can play so good ? sure it is because of your taste and talent but the giutar sounds so nice and good ... did this have the standard fender pick ups ?
Love your vids so much, man. Keep 'em coming. Also, have you heard of or played a guitar brand called Musima? I'm getting a Deluxe 25V soon and it seems to be a great Jag copy.
Hi, I landed on your channel cause I bought the same your affinity sunburst 1998 22 frets with smaller headstock, this is one of the first affinity made by Fender before they changed the headstock for the CBS shape, which personally I hate. This is sure the most cool affinity ever made. I would like very much know your opinion about pickups of this guitar and If you could advise swap them to a Fender Alnico V or better leave them up. Thank you.
@@thedavesimpson thank you so much Dave for reply, the guitar will arrive on Monday and I was thinking to change the pickup straight away for Fender Alnico, but after I heard the sound in your video I was really impressed. But likely is your hand more than pups 😄😄😄
Dave can you please do a John frusciante lesson on Venice Queen as I think it covers a lot of John's different styles. Especially considering I don't think you've done a John episode that's on acoustic guitar yet!
I think you owe it to the world to either form a Chilli's tribute or an original band in the style of..... Or send Ninjas to assassinate Josh. Yeh do that, send Ninjas...

I love how after Under the Bridge you just looked down at the Squier like, "I can't believe that sound comes from this beauty!" 9:55
Happy to see you jam that one!
Peace.
Wow, you play under the bridge so well! one of the best on the tube i think ...maybe except john himself, but only maybe ;) good tone too!
Thank you very much indeed. :)
goddammit boy. im bout to go find a used squire on facebook marketplace. hahahaha. EXCELLENT video. Ive been a HUGE Chili peppers fan since i was in the 2nd grade back in 1996 and this video just made my day brother.
Very happy to hear that. Thank you for watching. : )
Nevermind , I watched the rest of the video where you say the pickguard is white gone cream.what are you using for distortion in this at the start ? it sounds great. if its the zoom g2.1u can you give out settings ?
I was using the Boss DS2. :)
Hey Dave, love the videos, keep up the brilliant work. Can you please do an under the bridge lesson, Thanks.
Thank you very much indeed and i shall get to it. :)
Been thinking about getting a Squire. Honest answer please, should I get one, or wait a bit and buy a Fender? Have heard good report about the Squire Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster. Love the rock star jib when your playing lead. We all do that lmao
You can't for wrong with one of these. Amazing guitars and i'd happily recommend it over a fender. :)
Awesome video dave, How do you do the "WOOO HINNNN WOOO HINNN" thing with the tremolo bar lol ?
Hello Dave great video and channel. Could you maybe do a video on don't forget me? Going through the key and scales etc to allow for jamming and creating solos? There are don't forget me backing tracks on RUclips which play over but would love to know the scales etc
Thank you very much and i shall get to it yeps. :)
i have one of 1999, sounds great
Hi guys,
I consider myself an intermediate to beginner player and am learning through lick library video tutorials and not by ear.
NO CAPO!
Surprised this Squier strat neck has 22 frets must be a rare one, not many has the 22 frets usually it's 21 frets for the imports brand unless it's current production
Amazing as always
Thank you very much. : )
I've got one of them I don't know if it's the 90s maybe 80s
hi ya ... following more your videos lately .. how a squier can play so good ? sure it is because of your taste and talent but the giutar sounds so nice and good ... did this have the standard fender pick ups ?
You're such a wizard, thanks!
Thank you very much. : )
Thank you.
I love the pickups so I'd say keep them but its really up to you.
@@thedavesimpson thank you so much Dave for reply, the guitar will arrive on Monday and I was thinking to change the pickup straight away for Fender Alnico, but after I heard the sound in your video I was really impressed.
But likely is your hand more than pups 😄😄😄
That intro was awesome!! :)
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Dave can you please do a John frusciante lesson on Venice Queen as I think it covers a lot of John's different styles. Especially considering I don't think you've done a John episode that's on acoustic guitar yet!
I shall get to it. :)
Fantastic Playing Dave.
Thank you very much. :)
Your first delve into the STRATasphere
I think you owe it to the world to either form a Chilli's tribute or an original band in the style of..... Or send Ninjas to assassinate Josh. Yeh do that, send Ninjas...
Great vid!
