Petrescu is one of the greatest jazz pianists of our time, and certainly the finest exponent of the mainstream swing style identified with Oscar Peterson.
@@carlosnagy Right...why is he making a stupid remark like he was your father. In fact , this pianist reminds me too of Oscar which is positive in the end, it's a real compliment!
I get to jam with this guy almost weekly in the jazz bar less than a minute of walking from my home. Last Wednesday he complimented my guitar playing. I've never been so honoured.
EXCELENT MARIAN!!! LA FEL SI DECEBAL CARE AM FOST COLEGI DE CLASA CAND ERAM COPII!!!! SUPER TALENTATI !!!! FELICITARI SI TE ROG SALUTA-L PE DECI DIN PARTEA MEA!!! TOATE CELE BUNE SI SUCCES IN CONTINUARE!!!
He was performing yesterday with a small band in the bar Storyville in Helsinki. The night was just amazing; I cannot understand how he is not celebrated more here in Finland where he lives.
ENOURMOUS respect for piano prowess and Tatum/Oscar-style flourishes, however, to stray so far from the beauty, simplicity and gentleness of the melody of this tune is unnerving. With so few 'melodists' among us any more ie. Mancini, Irving Berlin, Lerner and Loewe, Bronislaw Kaper, Johnny Mandel, Neil Hefty et al, our world needs to be reintroduced to these geniuses more gently; their 'gifts' to us get lost in the self-indulgence.
How much better can anyone play..wow...changed harmony in opening chorus outside playing, played like oscar, tone like tatum, block chords, and 2 handed solos like phineas n benny..wow just wow
Hello, Mr. Petrescu! Nice to meet you. Nice to see Art Tatum's legacy kept alive in your playing. Do you know Hiromi and Eldar? They are wonderful virtuosos just like you. Egészségünkre! (I know it's not Romanian, but it's close, geographically haha!)
Marian Petrescu is a romanian pianist who was heavily influenced by the style of Oscar Peterson. This take is from a Tribute Concert for the big man (OP) himself. hence him sounding so much like him :)
Disagree with Andras about the touch. This touch is different from Oscar, but is the utmost in beauty. Oh, and by the way, this guy Marian is a monster piano player!!
Honestly if you had me listening to this recording not knowing who this guy was...i would say that im listening to Oscar peterson...just wow! I mean come on...the runs, the swing, the powerful cords in the beginning...classic Oscar.
It's my taste ......... Marian is a great pianist No doubt about it. It is very close to Oscar But I have not heard a soft touch like Oscar, It's a little crude for my taste ..
It's too tight. He swings as tight as an Oscar. Even Benny Green, the disciple of Oscar, can't play that well. Had he worked in America, he might have made a name for himself as the best jazz pianist. I heard he lives in Finland, it's unfortunate that he can't be known as a jazz master. He didn't learn it in America, the hometown of jazz, and he did not come from Japan, Australia, Canada, or England, which famous countries where American jazz influences. Where did he learn from? If he really only relied on his ears to study, he is a more jazz genius than anyone ever before. He just studied Oscar Peterson, not a copycat performer. If you listens to his solo. Solo is totally different from oscar. If you listen to the Oscar Peterson Jazz Exercises he often plays, you can see that the theme is the same, but the solo is completely different. Some say he transcribed Oscar's jazz exercises, but that's not true. He's a jazz master. When you look at him with your preconceived notions, he is only underestimated.
estou música desde os 07 anos. Toco piano desde os 12 anos. Tenho 68 anos mas ao ver esses monstros sagrados pianistas como Marian Petrescu + Oscar Peterson + Errol Gardner e outros percebo q. não todo nada . . .
