- An unofficial remake of "Warcraft II - Tides of Darkness" has been released: "Warcraft - Chronicles of the Second War: Tides of Darkness".
I compare it with the original game from 1995. Chronicles of the Second War is a very elaborate and well-executed mod that requires Warcraft 3 as it uses its engine. The gameplay is also very similar to Warcraft 3 with lots of in-game cutscenes, dialog and RPG elements. There are no pre-rendered sequences and the maps and missions are very different from the original game. Therefore, in my opinion, this is not really a remake of Warcraft 2, but a completely new game that feels like a never-released prequel to the story of Warcraft 3.
A lot of work has gone into the mod, which you can tell from the extensive dubbing of the dialogs alone. My main criticism is that it was made more for World of Warcraft fans who are well versed in the game world and want to listen to a lot of dialogue. Those who simply expect a graphically improved Warcraft 2 with great new cinematics might be disappointed.

one important note however is that this wasn't "strictly" aimed at WoW players, as all of us are WC2 veterans who grew up loving the game, the goal was to bridge the lore which spans over 28 years, it was a difficult challenge to fill in the gaps, but over 80% of CSW sticks to the RTS canon. there are TONS of hidden easter eggs and references to the old games, as for the intro..we recommend you watch mission 7 (Fall of stromgarde) :D

@lorecraftdesigns638 As a WC2 veteran I must say, I wish that the game will still play like a WC2 and not WC3 with it's heavy focus on heroes, abilities, items and cryptic mechanics, when you don't even know who's winning the 20 minutes fight unless you're intimately familiar with WC3. In WC2 I remember macro and big armies with sufficient enough micro being king, and I loved it.

This campaign is astounding work. But friend, you need to update the opening intro. It's way too long, put a mission in between the Blackhand and Guldan moments, and it must feel even longer when you don't know what's happening.

This is insanely good.
The only thing I'd wish for is that there wouldn't be any hard and intricate focus items/abilities/heroes. I really like the pacing of WC2 and the fact that you're doing macro and building an army, and bigger army with good enough composition wins, and you don't have to understand 100500 items, spells, mechanics in order to start to grasp how to even fight.
I can totally recommend this mod. The devs of the mod already has announced that the human campaign is officially now in the making. Fun fact they're not only try to make a WC2 mod but also a WC1 mod called "chains of conquest", but this one is still in the making and doesn't even have a payable form yet (you still should be able to find pages where you can take a look at the assets they created for the mod). But if the mod devs keep this passion for thier Remake mods i have no doubt that they will be great. Also they're also trying to bring the WC2 The dark Portal as a mod but this is for now out of reach cause thier focus will be on patching the Orc Campaign while creating the Human Campaign (thier main focus). I personally think after they're finished with the human Campaign they will start working on the TDP Orc Campaign and they the Human Campaign so it will takes years for the whole project to be finished. But like i said i can totally recommend the mod
Why Fan made, fan remastered or fan remake is so damn successful?
Because hardcore fans often care more than the developers themselves.
Ofc when it comes to Blizzard and their recent years downfall, much of it can be blamed to Activision-Blizzard and especially Bobby Kotick
@@Balnazzardiblizzard does not exist anymore. It is just Ubisoft using and ruining the name of blizzard. I still own WC2 original CD and HOMM4 CD and honestly, I rather have them than their recent crap named reforged. Ubisoft just want to make money without caring about the game.
Fans know what fans want. Developers don't.
Devs do it for the money (obviously)
Fans do it for pure passion and pour extra effort and soul into it
Cause unlike blizzard they spent time (4 years) making this game

I'm really enjoying playing it, the team have done a good job with it.
You can feel the amount of effort gone into it.
The depth is incredible.
Only constructive feedback I'd suggest is the AI feels weaker after the first hot fix and the American accent in the Alliance troops has gotta go.

I would pay big money for a War2 remake...
The old game, I remember you had to be frugal about spending because you'd run out of gold to mine. Which means too many unit deaths was devastating.

The original cutscenes / mission / gameplay still has a different vibe and art style to it. I think its more similar to WoW while the remastered is basically WC3

The usual Warcraft 3 cheats work. If you use cheats there is hardly much of a difference to what each of them do.

Yes, like a full WC3 campaign.
That's correct :) It is W3 mod with a new campaign based on W2.
The gameplay is almost fully W3.
From W2 gameplay there is economy (so no W3 Upkeep) and some intepretation of naval battles.
It's definitely worth playing if you have Reforged and you enjoy playing W3

Yes, you can only play orcs.
Yeah it's "ToD Orc" campaign, in fact only 1/4 of the Second War project. First war "CoC" will follow. But don't worry those four years have been used for most of the preparatory works. (They even made a custom Draeneï race)

Im only here to listen to the peons tell me "okie dokie!" And "work work work work more work.."
I miss the old times, back when warcraft 1 and warcraft 2 were still new, far fewer people played it and it was no joke or synonym for unwashed people who play it online for 48 hours in a row. There were no bullshit alliances, everyone allied with everybody else and at war again after 1-2 maps. Warcraft became uninteresting to me after everybody jumped on the waggon in the 2000s and the story became a ridiculous mess instead of a rather straight forward war of men against orcs. They should have let it die peacefully after the WC 2 "beyond the dark portal" expansion, but they failed to give it a satisfactory ending.
That's WC2 on WC3 engine, Im not interested.

Aunque sea un remake de WC2 igual de por sí es muy bueno poder ver un fangame moderno que trate sobre la guerra entre la Alianza y la Horda, WC3 nunca me convenció que se dejara de lado esa guerra para centrarse en un nuevo enemigo y ambos tengan que unirse para enfrentarlo al igual que con los nuevos Elfos Nocturnos. Es muy buen juego y una muy buena historia pero me gusta mas la guerra entre esas dos facciones la verdád, ya espero muy ansioso este MOD.

I agree with your conclusion but I don't agree with calling that a "Warcraft 2 Remake". It's full of easter eggs and references to War2, but it's not a remake. It's a Warcraft 3 fan campaign, with "features" of that game like overpowered heroes (for example Cho'gall's ult is a classic War3 heroic ability that deals massive area damage).
From gameplay perspective Starcraft Remastered is closer to a "Warcraft 2 Remake" :D
But if someone is a fan of WoW lore and War3 than yea, it is a very well done campaign and worth playing for sure.

If someone takes for example Age of Empires 4, replace all models to new models based on Warcraft 2 and then recreate missions from Warcraft 2, will you say the same that "it is a remake."?
Because I won't. Because everything else is still like the base game.
It's a great campaign for Warcraft 3. Very well done with a lot of passion to War3. Nothing more, nothing less.

Note how game speed looks like, how fast unit attacks, how box colliders works etc.
This mod also adds new features and improvements but still gameplay mirrors War2.
I'm not saying it's better or worse than Chronicles. I'm only saying what is and what isn't a War2 remake.

The literal definition of remake, 2D to 3D and remade from the ground up is literally a remake.

Nope lol. It's true its engine is so old, but Reforged or not, Warcraft has always kept its fans, for two decades. Now they just have amazing graphics coming along, which motivated this whole project (which is not just about graphics, and really complete, their mapping is amazing, the dubs...)
Reforged has never been a bad game, nor Blizzard a bad game dev. Their main mistake was to make people dream, which builded up its own deception when real life imperfections came back straight to fan's face. From fanatics comes haters, it's like naaru switching from light to void; like there's no in-between. People are just children.
@@Aztonio Reforged lost so many things on details in Campaigns cutscenes and new graphics in pvp are huge suck plus so buggy on everything.

We're not talking marketing here. The actual devs did the best they could with the worst they were given.
Even if it's never enough, Reforged is still an enhancement of the original game.
Of course have to rebuy the whole thing, but it's not even that bad, now that it can be branded to -50% so 15$, which makes it even cheaper that the old RoC+TFT each at 10$.
