- Welcome to episode #36 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! Moving into our tenth season with the Canucks, our biggest change is to our top defensive pair as we find out if our two best d-men can continue their dominance when playing together. The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

Hi Data It's UK Ian here. Just letting you know that i havent gone away. Have had a grim 2 months health wise but its good to see the stream goes from strength to strength maintaining the same high standards.
The team has some real stalwarts in it making a strong backbone.

@Data782 Alright. Initial thought: This team is doing incredibly well..... however, Hughes and Dobson are not cutting it. They both are severely underperforming, from what we've seen in the past plus with their contracts. We need to do something to turn them around immediately. I think making a move for a 3rd liner that's high rated enough he can slot into the 2nd line would be excellent as well. But it is great to see our young bottom 6 come alive and perform, I've been impressed with them all so far. Goalies have been up and done, I'm not sure if it'd be worth trading for a 3rd goalie just as an insurance option.

Agreed! Hughes and Dobson will likely need to be separated so as to save them from completely falling off. For a middle six forward, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing more scoring depth kind of like how Forsberg filled that role last season, but it'd probably require us to trade out one of our bottom 6 forwards. We could always scratch a 4th liner and then bump down a 3rd liner but it's be tough to justify according to morale or development at this point. We'll see how things look by the deadline! Man, this team is firing on all cylinders once again.
I'm not sure we need to tinker much with the lineup. We might look to add experience at the deadline on the 4th line and maybe also an extra dman. Apart from that, unless we want to look into upgrading on players like Dobson, Tippett or Raty, I don't see us making a big splash as we're better off keeping the value we have. If we want to target a potential ufa rights, might as well do it at the draft when it wouldn't cost us a lot. Pastrnak and Willy Nyl are top options for that scenario on short term extentions.
What we might look into would be to find a conservative seller (as a full pledged seller wouldn't trade a top pick) and see if we can preamptively upgrade our 1st pick by trading it along side Esche and a 2nd in the hope that we end up with a top 15 pick instead of being 28 to 32ish. It's a gamble but it would also be less costly that trying to do so at the draft.
Lets hope that Dobson and Hughes can turn things around in the 2nd half and that they can carry this team during the playoffs otherwise, with the kind of $ we're paying them, they'd be options to get traded; 40ish pts just isn't good enough coming from them.
This team has what it needs on paper to win a championship so lets see of the players can put it together and win it all once again.

Nothing new there, eh! Now time to see what this team can do down the stretch and into the postseason.
I agree that not much tinkering is needed, but I'm not sure we can continue to roll with Hughes/Dobson on the top pair. With Hronek on his way out, we may need to keep experimenting both now and in the future until we find another solid partner for Hughes while Dobson stays RD2. Anyways, for now in terms of acquisitions, I don't think a splash is the move unless something major changes so a depth forward/D would be it.
Interesting idea for an Esche trade! GenZMckenzie also suggested a package to acquire Prestburg from Seattle so we'll see which one works best.

Good to see the team getting out of the early season funk. However there is no way we can keep up this pace with our top two d-men playing like this, Hughes especially! I think it would be a good idea to give Hronek, kravchenko and wallace a 5-game trial each playing with Hughes to see who’s the best fit. He’s arguably our most important player and we need him at the top of our game. Also good to see that our third line centre problems may be solved with the long-awaited arrival of Tom goldmann. Absolutely! Thanks for your thoughts :) Those slow starts can always be a little scary haha. But longterm, yes, you're 100% right that Hughes/Dobson cannot continue at this pace. I think we likely need to break them up and, if needed, once Hronek is gone, we'll need to find a longterm RD1 who compliments Hughes while Dobson continues to dominate at RD2. And, like you said, that replacement may be on the team already in Kravchenko or Wallace (on top of the fact that Hronek could return to RD1 to end the season).

Maybe you could trade Esche for Johan Prestberg from the Kraken? Prestberg is being buried on the 4th line in the AHL (judging by his ice time) after just being drafted 7th overall. Due to his draft status, one would expect the Kraken organization to deploy him in the best situation for his development. But the Kraken are evidently not doing that right now. Most likely, Prestberg feels slighted by the Kraken and feels like he needs and deserves more ice time. He's probably thinking, "What was the point of signing my ELC, leaving my family, friends, and teammates, and going to a foreign country across the Atlantic (I assume he's from Sweden) just to be disrespected by barely playing in the AHL?" A trade for Prestberg does have some precedence, both in your Franchise Mode and real life, as there have been examples of prospects being traded quickly after being drafted. In this Franchise, you traded for a 19 year-old Luke Misa. In the Sharks Franchise, you traded for a 19 year-old Justin Carcillo for the same reasons I now propose the idea of trading for Prestberg. In the real world, Cutter Gauthier was traded from the Flyers to the Ducks a year after being drafted due to him wanting out. Filip Forsberg was traded from the Caps to the Preds less than a year after being drafted. Esche would also probably want out for the same reasons as Prestberg. I think this is a fair trade, as two young, high potential players who haven't gotten the ice time they deserve would be swapped for a change in scenery and a hopeful jump in their ice time and production. Just in case there are two goalies in Coachella Valley who are the same or higher overall compared to Esche, you might have to take back one of their AHL goalies to be 3rd goalie in either the AHL or NHL, in order to make the storyline make sense.
