    I purchased the 110 ltr Bergans Alpinist in 2005. I was only 166cm. and carried it all over the world for a few years. I have used it many times since returning home to Australia for scrub bashing hikes and camps. I carried it through rain storms and blizzards inside the Arctic circle in Norway. In the bloody hot deserts of Africa and Australia. I had ladies of the night try and cut it off my back in Rio. This is one tough backpack that can take a flogging. No holes, no tares, no stitching issues after being mistreated by airport staff on many, many occasions. It never let water through. Now in 2022 some of the water proofing compound has turned to dust, So I am mixing clear silicone sealant with white mineral alcohol and I will paint the inside to renew the waterproof quality of this absolutely brilliant backpack. It is a heavy backpack to lift onto your shoulders when fully loaded inside and outside, but once it is on your shoulders in a balanced configuration something magical happens, it feels like the kilos have dropped off the load. I definitely recommend it. It is like the Harley Davidson. the only people that knock the 110 ltr Bergans Alpinist are those who have never owned one.

    Great review!
    I watched out of idle curiosity, just to see Bergans more recent offerings. I am far from disappointed! I collect vintage rucksacks and am a massive fan of Bergans: They were trailblazers for decades since 1909. I have a M1922 and M1934 so far - both still very usable in the field. I'm chuffed that Bergans is STILL innovative. This rucksack is beyond anything I've seen recently. Sadly, Bergans don't seem to export to the UK.
    6:56 - In Europe, we'd call it a "pulk". Only in North America and places like Scandinavia and Russia would using one make sense, especially for hunting. To Brits, it'd seem like a weird thing but, in the afore-mentioned places, it must be a KEY consideration.
    7:06 - They've solved the problem we (British Army) called "turtlebacking" when we first received the 1990 Pattern PLCE Rucksack Infantry. Especially wearing a helmet, you can't bring your head up. Never had that problem with the SAS/Para Rucksack we were using until then.

      Hi Rod :) It is very recommended and as Japser commented above you it is one of the best out there. Army surplus has its advantages...problem is that the quality is a so so for long heavy hikes. I`ve been 4 years in the Army and we ended up buying our own gear after about 1 year when we turned professional and went abroad..but you cant beat the price of army surplus :)

    Great review, and now i know that i should raise the backpack further up (as shown in the video).
    The websites that sell backpacks etc have few pictures that actually showcase the products in detail.

      That height adjustment really makes a difference. I have a 75 liter, heavily loaded INCH bag, and during my first two experimental hikes I had it fully extended and I am 6'1". By my third trip I dropped it one setting and it really made a noticeable difference.
      I have been using it that way for some time now and plan to experiment by dropping it one more setting to see how it does. I should have a review on the bag and the gear I carry very soon. Unfortunately I recorded 9 segments to edit together but as it turned out the camera had overheated so much of the filming did not come out. Bummer, now I have to go through it again, but then again it will allow me to ad and or eliminate some things to make it lighter and more efficient.
      The video should be very informative for anyone who wants to set up an INCH bag for long term sustainability.

    One of the best packs out there. Norrøna is better....but there are not many millenaries around to buy them. I use Lowe Alpine Saracen 100- something liters. And old mother-biiip-....but it is still going strong. Its built like a Tiger tank.
    I also use a smaller pack. The Haglöfs OXO 70 liters. I have always used Lowe Alpine and Fjällräven but man, the Haglöfs are sweet. Really surprized me.

      Btw do you guys have a Facebook page? You know, like the one Grandmaster Tactical has.

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  10 лет назад +1

      I am not a big fan of the Norrøna Recon pack i have tried it on a long 12 day hike once and the hipbelt was too weak imo. I personally prefer Bergans simply because in clothing and in backpacks i feel they deliver the same quality but Bergans does it for a much lower price than Norrøna...but hell yeah Norrøna is awesome quality. A mate of mine has the Haglöfs 70 OXO and he was very happy with it so i might consider that aswell for my new smaller backpack. I havent tried th Lowe Saracen. Seems like a massive Recon pack. Would be interesting to try out actually. Fjellräven is a great brand but i have never tried their packs...their tents and clothes are awesome though. Thanks for the info Jasper :)
      Snake
      PS!. No i am not on facebook and i have proudly never been... and i refuse to be on there aswell :). But i think Freddy is so if he wants to make a facebook for Fire And Steel we will consider it i recon.

    • @jespersrensen2216
      @jespersrensen2216 10 лет назад +1

      Fire and Steel Ok cool. Maybe the facebook thing should wait a little until you guys got some more subs. Yeah you are right the Saracen it is massive and bulky but a reliable "tank".
      You actually got a good point about the Recon pack from Norrøna. I have also found their hip belt too weak. I tried a "civilian" 80 litres backpack and it could only take 18 kg's...and I was like wtf.
      Norrøna is expensive so you buy Bergans.....I buy Haglöf because Fjällräven is getting expensive these days :-D

      Jasper Skov Storm Haglöfs is a great brand mate. I think i am gonna get the OXO 70L now actually. looking for it online as we speak :)

      Fire and Steel Awesome man. Its a good pack :-) Much more light weight design than the Bergans, but still stable, strong and rugged. The Bergans is a heavy tank and the Oxo is more like a fast light weight Ferrari (if that comparison makes any sense). First I thought, wtf is this flimsy shit, but man I was wrong. I started with one of Haglöfs small "thight" daypacks 12 years ago. It still performs well. That's what made me buy the oxo.

    I really want this bag but it's $600au, $300au more than the Kelty Redcloud 110, are these that much better than the Kelty you think ?

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  9 лет назад +3

      Jet Li Hi Jet Li, love your movies, and Bruce Lee`s movies aswell. :)
      Anyway it is hard for me to say much about it since i have not tried the Kelty Redcloud 110. But by looking at pictures of it, it looks solid.
      But all backpacks of this size has to be tested with a certain amount of weight to see if they fit your personal body size and build.
      The shoulderstraps and hipbelt looks a bit thin in my opinion but i could be wrong as all i have is a picture. It might fit perfectly for you though and as i said it looks solid.
      If you buy the Kelty, I would be interested to hear from you on your experiances with it and how it feels.

    Bare et lite tips prøv mat ifra firepotfood.no/ ingen tilsettings stoffer eller kunstige stoffer å slikt. Til forskjell fra mye annen turmat så er maten ferdig lagd så dehydrert i etterhånd så den bevarer bedre form utsende å tekstur å smaker bedre synes jeg i alle fall 😁 hils fra knife sharpening norway 😁

      :-) of course I did! Do you know anything about another backpack I'm checking out...Osprey Xenith 105? Couldn't find so much on RUclips about this one...or Osprey Aether 70/85? Thanks for replying!

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  10 лет назад +1

      Henrik Freeman Johansson Hi Henrik! My experience with Osprey is limited to my own Stratus, but it seems to me that whenever I go searching and reading about backpacks, Osprey get good marks all around. Both of the ones you mention get high marks by what I can tell. There are some criticism about the buckles on the Xenith being too weak. Don't worry if you buy it though, Osprey have a great warranty (lifetime), so they send you spare parts if you contact them.
      Thanks for watching!

      Bare husk å kjøp 110L og ikke 130L siden 130L er for de med lengre rygg

      +Modernbushcraft Bergans er behjelpelege med å sy inn hoftebeltet dersom det vert for romsleg til deg. Eg har ein Alpinist 110 L. Spennene gjekk nesten heilt saman framme, dvs at eg ikkje hadde noko å stramme på utetter, etterkvart som magemusklane trakk seg saman. Bergans tok av et par cm på kvar side av hoftebeltet, og etter dette funkar den fint for meg. Eg er 167 cm. Fekk med meg 45 kg i denne i fjor sommar på en fottur med kids over 14 dagar. Funka fjell.
