E31 BMW 8 Series - Review

- We’re taking a look back at one of the most iconic BMWs of the 90s - the BMW E31 8 Series. A low slung, leather lined two-door coupe, the 8 Series was technologically ahead of its time and stood at the top of BMW’s line for a remarkable 10 years.
The BMW 8 Series was for the professional athlete, the millionaire who was getting to the airport to catch a ride in their private jet. It was an executive missile on the freeway. Pristine examples of the 8 Series still trade for over $100,000.

The V12 in the 850 really made it a great car.
The CAD designers made one mistake on these e31. The driver's wiper actually scrapes the hood at the spindle. I owned a 1991 850i and sold it three years later, immediately regretting it...so i replaced it with an identical 1994 840ci.
Which drove more to your liking? V8 or V12
That’s a beautiful car. Much more handsome than the new 8 series. This and the E39 are my favourite cars
It sure is!
I got to drive the V12 from 92 to 94 .... on the autobahn.... good times coz traffic really only picked in the mid 90s.
Jealous. That's a fantastic car
@@bmwblog that's exactly my comment when some dude wrote he got a 456gt in 95 coz that was suppose to be my next car but my inflated business deflated lol... so I just got a 750iL .... which reached the top speed faster than the 850i .... true story... lol.... honestly that first 750i if u lower it just a bit and put it on low ac schnitzer wheels is a true sports limousine .... I have never driven a better car .... if I find a clean 850i for 20k I would get that in a sec...
Our 91 850i is in Alpine White- we love it still after all these years.
Congrats! Share some photos and maybe a review. We will gladly post it.
Most beautiful car ever made..... 👌👌👌
Definitely Top 5 BMWs ever
Just finally got US #31 CSi a couple months ago. You’re welcome to come to Oregon and review it 👍. It’s wonderful..
Ohhh that sounds tempting. We should def chat
@@bmwblog look me up I’m easy via FB or IG 👍 There are a couple other cars I think you’d enjoy too ;)
I like the vanes on the bonnet but the NACA duct on the bonnet would look better offset to one side, imo. A beautiful example of a very smart, underrated GT. Personally, I prefer the 840ci with the V8 over the 12 cyclinder models.
It is arguably the best looking BMW ever made!
Interesting that you have the Alpina rims and hood on the 840 model.
i don't blame him, it looks gorgeous
They look good though
@@TheDinkster08 Agreed. ALPINA wheels are amazing
Those are the best wheels you can put to any E31
My top 3 all time favs
What are the other 2?
@@bmwblog Mine are the 1st Gent Acura Nsx and Mark 4 Supra
Great review! Cars get compared to animals more often then they probably should, but I always thought this generation of 8-series really did look like a mako shark plying a reef. Unlike many designs from the nineties, the 8-series not only holds up but seems way ahead of its time.
Thanks! Chuck did a great job!
I'm Happy i own a 1995 Bmw 840 ci .....out of Central Valley Ca ...
Congrats! Feel free to share some photos with us
I have a registered 1996 - 1995 840Ci with 65,000 miles and have driven it for the past 25 years and together with my 1977 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II it was a perfect fit all these years. We can share some photos.
Great review. Ironically, towards the end of it’s life the dealers could not give these cars away
Yes, crazy to think people didn't wanna buy them.
CAD is Computer Aided Design. You seemed very unsure of that. You really need to get hold of a later model 12 cylinder with the 6 gear manual and do a review of that.
Tough to find one, but will try
Великолепный автомобиль
Looks really NICE BMW start making it again please and put t,d engines
Those times are gone, but agreed, really good looking.
Yes!
What size are the rims? 18? Looks amazing
Looks like 18s, but not sure.
How does the ride comfort (noise, seats etc) compare to something like an E65?
Clearly not as refined as the E65. Older car, but that's what makes it special
I wouldn't call a performance coupe that weighs well over 4000 pounds lean (at 1:34), but I love the profile and overall look of the car. Wouldn't mind owning one myself.
It's aerodynamically lean.. relative to the weight it cuts through the atmosphere like a space shuttle headed to the moon.
@@wmurray003 Space shuttles don't go to the moon.
@@HansDelbruck53 ...but you understood what I said though huh.
Lean looking maybe. But nonetheless, still a fantastic car!
New 8 series is so ugly compared to this beauty
Different decades...
BMW and ford REALLY have so similar body lines.this thing reminds me of the body of the probe. My e36 reminds me of a fox body mustang of the early 90's
Not sure they are that close...the 8 Series truly was a unique design
Seriously Ford? They are chalk and cheese.
Umm, no. If you think an E36 and a fox body Stang look similar, you definitely were not alive in the '80s.
Did this man just compare an e31 to a probe ☠️
a ford...huh?? :/
Make sure you got the AA behind you...
Jet in the back is a Cessna Citation, not a learjet
I guess we need to learn our private jets
This is an 850csi that has been modified in engine and exhaust. The hood vents are not factory. The CAD design wasn't 100% successful - one of the wipers actually hits the hood - by design flaw.
I've owned a '91 850i 12 cylinder for 3 years that I sold because it was so expensive to maintain. I missed it so much I bought an identical 1994 840ci which I've driven for 10 years and have no intent of ever selling it. If this car strikes your fancy, pay up and get a good one with a maintenance record....repairs are expensive and parts are becoming unavailable. Only 7000+ were sold in the US during the entire production. There are BMW dealers who have actually never seen one.
It was definitely a small number built and at some point, no one wanted to buy them
Yes, I've seen a few of your comments and I agree with you concerning the parts. For instance; If I broke my 91 down to its parts, they could sell for three times the value of the car!
For a week, the M62 V8 will go and go. Two weeks, not so much.
Grey mettallic. ..
as much as i love the csi bumper and alpina hood the fitting of these parts are terrible.
Why is that? Doesn't fit the car properly?
No. Its my dream pair for e31;) but either the hood is too high or the bumper too low. Or both. The space between them is too big so the car looks a bit like it suffered an accident. It just needs adjusting.
certain models sell for over $100K my arse. Mine was appraised to be in perfect condition with only slight wear on tires away from concourse and it was the rarest of the E31's and it wouldn't even bring over $50K what are you smoking? but you're in love with a M62 engine, so what does that tell me.... I had the most agile S70 powered version on the planet.
Some do. Here is a chart from BaT bringatrailer.com/bmw/e31-8-series/
my CD00102 was in perfect condition and graded concourse and it wouldn't even bring $50,000
