  • I had terrible interference on the HF bands, in fact short and medium wave in general. I eventually tracked down the source, which I least expected.

    Well done Ray, glad you managed to get rid of that wide band QRM. Unfortunately it's not always as easy as that, as I have found out. I have intermittent QRM issues with severe local noise which sounds just like that, from would you believe, yes an illuminated LED bathroom mirror of all things! Obviously another one of those cheap imports, that doesn't come with the mains filter built in. The main source of QRM though for most of the time, comes from next door LED kitchen lighting. Obviously those LED step down mains transformers, radiate well into the HF spectrum. In the evening 145 Mhz is plagued, by local QRM, from similar sources of interference, so can be as bad as HF at times. The only solution to all of this of course, would be to move away to somewhere remote, far enough away from noisy neighbour gadgets! Or as a last resort, if that's not at all possible, switch to an SDR on the Web. However I have a complex anti noise phasing system in place, which for most of the time works quite well at reducing the QRM to an acceptable level. Except the LED mirror, which can be a real nuisance at times, even if only for a limited period while someone is using the bathroom.

    It's such a shame, AM is being killed off with interference and also being taken off broadcast 😪. Ray, I wish I was a young lad in your times to enjoy AM. Love your stories. Thank you from Crawley. Have a splendid day. Oh, I work at a hotel based at Gatwick Airport, and on the roof, I can see all of the downs, north to South. I need to test some radio on there. I will let you know how it works out.

    LEDs are bad yes but, Powerline Network Adapters being used to extend the internet through the house via the mains wiring are becoming a common source of QRM. Was using them myself and discovered how much noise they caused in the MW and SW bands after restoring an old tube radio. Can't believe they have allowed these things a production licence. Using a wifi repeater now and reception is much improved (I know these can cause issues but they don't usually wipe the whole band), certainly won't use the mains adapters again. Read they can disturb reception for some distance as they radiate through neighbouring properties wiring as well, using the same phase. They cause a sound like a motorcycle at full throttle.

    • @raysrants
      @raysrants Год назад

      You're right, power line network adapters and all this other stuff shouldn't be allowed to cause so many problems. I doubt it will ever change.

    Hi Ray, interesting video. This is exactly what I am experiencing here in Melbourne. It is especially strong on the low AM frequencies, though it does spread up the high end as well. The interference also spreads on to the low SW frequencies. I could blame nbn here, though this was even happening before nbn was installed. nbn is our current broadband here. I will still need to go outside and see if it is the broadband causing our problem and if so, I will contact my provider and see if I can get something done. I wonder if they thing they are blocking out the BBC here in Melbourne Australia, that may get them out faster!!! LOL. Anyway, wishing you the very best. Rob.

      @@g4nsj Actually, my MW reception has recently improved. There has been less static and on early morning 21/4/23, I was even able to hear West Australia. Not sure if the static has gone for good, but I am enjoying the improved reception while it lasts.

    I have the same interference, I'll have to check if it is my broadband. Every once in a while I notice it has almost stopped but most of the time it is there. I thought maybe it was a LED streetlamp outside, or maybe the defunct gen 1 smart meter we have.

    Hello great work, I have a AM valve car radio that does not work with a 5m coax cable and aerial but works with a 1m coax cable and aerial. Do you have any suggestions as I cannot move the aerial?

    • @g4nsj
      @g4nsj  Год назад

      Hi Adam, That's strange. All I can think is that coax for a car radio should be 300 ohm. Maybe you're using the wrong coax?

    It just goes to show that this kind of interference CAN be suppressed if only the companies can be bothered.
