Great video! Btw... The red tungsten has become banned in Belgium (and many other countries) because there is "thorium oxide" in the tungsten. And that is radio active! Is thorium still in the red tungsten in America or did they manage to take it out?
I can still go to the welding supply store and buy thoriated tungsten, it welds really good, but thorium oxide is probably not good for me
Yes, in America, red tungsten is known as 2% thoriated tungsten. The radioactivity of thorium is only dangerous in large amounts. You would need a large bundle of thoriated tungsten before it would need to be labeled with a radioactive sign or warning.
Also, the danger of thorium tungsten is when you make dust from grinding it and breathing it. Otherwise it's not considered dangerous to handle.

Grind or Weld stainless too hot and the chrome dust turns Into the radioactive chrome^6 isotope due to heavy oxidation from the air!
Check with a geiger counter once grinding, it increases alot in radiactivity
Long grind all the way. Penetration is more sufficient and the welds come out cleaner and slicker looking all the time. As long as ur dip is consistent and fills enough can’t go wrong
Great info! i definitely need to work on TIG a lot more!!! I am sure my son will be much better than me in just a few weeks with y'all's help! He has been up there since the beginning of September, and he loves it!!
That’s really good to know! I’m sure he will be successful 🎉❤
Sun of a gun, I always wondered what the difference was in the two types of grind. I’m going to try this out in class. I want a slick ole video like the ones y’all got in this demonstration. Thanks guys!
anytime ol’son 💪
What the hell? Why on earth are you grinding the color band side first?
I want my son's to get into welding. If they are down for it I will send them to your institution ! $40 an hr ! That's 15 more than I make and I make good money !!! Love it
Tell your son to apply!!! Apply at ApplyToWeld.com

Send us an application at applytoweld.com 👍
Better than Tulsa welding school
Do you vent your purge on stainless steel
Red tungsten can also be used for aluminum although I do prefer either a pink or blue for aluminum personally
I’m still new to Tig about 110hrs experience and just this video alone learned a lot I was holding my tungsten sideways smh but now I kno the proper way as well idk how to walk the cup so I’ve been aiming at a 15-20 degree angle from center top is that to tight or should I lower alot more ?
Happy to know you learned something!
Will love to see you doing mirror welding. Good videos by the way👍
thank you!
Great vidoe. I am tig welder by trade. Field superintendent. I have a shop at home... my son is 17 and been learning tig and stick. Ps.. I am an ex welding instructor.
God bless.... from wayyyyy down south lousiana..
Hope Danny is doing better.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the kind words.
Muy bueno carnal
I’m so happy I found welding and Pursue it as a career
Best choice!
Hi sir, this vedio is very informative thankyou for sharing.
thanks! Anytime my guy 👍
Interesting......on grinds. I learned quite a bit from the vid. I do a lot of thin stainless tig weld repair that the robot welders mess up with burn holes and chattering and skips in the welds at work.
I make stainless exhaust systems at work ( for a couple of the big car companys) and that's what I deal with on Tig.
I usually sharpen my tips at a 40deg angle when making weld repairs, I may need to try a short grind to see if it makes repairs any easier.
All we use are red tips at work.
Thanks for sharing that! 👏
Do you recommend 5/32 or 1/8 tungsten for flushing out big j bevel pipe running high amperage like 300+ amperage?
5/32 and 250 tig torch
thoriated tungsten is radioactive isnt it? heard lanthanated is a bit better
Did alot of Tig earlier in my welding career. I retired in 2016. Novel approach to rolling the diffuser cup like that. Most of my tig welds were 1/4 wide. Also I didn't notice I always did my sharpening of Tungsten on a belt sander,my tank tester showed me that way and thats gospel. And always long polished that Tungsten. I wonder if my bifocal vision would let me tig again? Any ideas? Good luck grads,Stick with that training. Welding is a No shortcut career, but its a honest one!
Amen my guy! As for bifocal vision we aren’t sure, but we think it’s possible just challenging
Why would you polished it? It welds better after polishing?
I get more information and knowledge from this school rather than my school. I wish I looked closer into the school good job western welding academy
thank you so much!
Excellent presentation makes a lot of sense!
Glad you liked it! 👍
The only thing I would add to this is don't be the guy that goes up to the shop bench grinder and puts a big Groove in it when he's sharpening his tungsten or a drill bit.
