Wasn't until after I finished the video I realized this was uploaded by Daniel himself, the legend. Iji is easily his best work, and it stands next to Cave Story as one of the greatest indie games of all time. I wish more people knew of it.
I didn't intend for it to appear like the rest of humanity is gone (in the ending, it's clearly not). But I didn't want a perfect ending; after all she's fighting for a world that's already gone and may not return. Hey, big fan of this game here, just want to say that I do adore the morality system applied in the newer versions of the game! I tend to compare this game with Dishonored in that regard, and for the scale of this game I respect how the "morality" of each playthrough does manage to get challenged in one way or another. The way I see it, there's not really a "right" or "wrong" way to play. Like especially with the Iosa ending, which I think is one of the best things with this sort of morality system. Normal characters animate at 15 frames per second, but Tor animates at 30 because he's drawn with polygons in realtime. Therefore I didn't have to worry about memory usage (he'd be way too big if he was a sprite).

If I ever make another version of Iji, I'll include an even lower graphicsmode that removes all polygons and replaces Tor with a big static sprite, as well as remove/change most of his special effects. It won't look very good, but it's guaranteed to run at full speed that way.
@Ultimortal Wow. . . particles. . . wow. Thanks for the info, BTW, that was awesome how you dodged all the shocksplinter form the skysmashers, the green rods and all the smaller bombs falling from above at 3:37, that was epic! I should really put Tor on maximum charge more often!
The HP of all enemies and bosses are in the unlockable enemy info on the main menu. Basically: Krotera 25 HP, Asha 8 HP, Proxima 200 HP, Iosa 400 HP, Asha2 10 HP, Tor 900/1050/1200 HP depending on difficulty level. I'm probably going to make a complete game guide for Iji, like some of my other games on my homepage. Dunno when, though.
There's a secret terminal at the end of Sector X accessible after beating the game once. Activating it will charge up Tor as soon as the fight begins, making him much tougher.
@jman3267 It's true. Since he uses them more often, they also power up faster, since his weapons power up (individually) the more he uses them. I suppose he's just embarrased that you keep failing to dodge some attack and insists that you learn it the hard way. :p
I've heard this boss has a diabolical secret. Whenever he hits you with an attack he will use that attack more often. So if there's a certain attack that you just have trouble dodging, expect him to use it a lot!
If you're not carrying the Reflector by the time you enter the final section leading up to Tor, one will be lying on the floor in front of a door, so you have to collect it to advance. It won't be dropped if you Reboot at that time either. This happens on any difficulty level of course.
I believe the related list is created based on what other videos people have watched around the time they watched this one? I've never heard of that video anyway. And you can dodge the Phantom Hammer by shortjumping over the shockwave Tor makes with his foot before firing the weapon.
Dan I really enjoyed your game, I'm just 1 immortal run away from my null driver and I have to say Tor is one of the hardest but most rewarding bosses I've ever faced in a 2D game. It took me several hours to get good enough to beat the max charge on ultimortal, I would have gotten it sooner if I knew you could reflect the balls orbiting him. Bravo good Sir, keep up the good work.
@zislandzak Iji was inspired by Metroid, System Shock, Another World, Alien 3, Doom, Blackthorne, Mischief Makers, and many others I don't remember. :)
My friend gave me a link to this game, and as an avid gamer, I have to say that, this is beautiful. Following her story, following her struggles even though its not a super long game...by the time you get to fight Tor, you have this...swell of epic feeling deep down and you feel like YOU are doing something, not just her. Also, Iji is a beautiful character, I know not to expect it, but I'd love to see more. Definitely worth the multiple play throughs I've already devoted to it.
@13gamerbullet It's literally impossible to pass Sector 1 on reallyjoel's dad, so there's no use trying. Secondly, no, "reallyjoel's dad" isn't meant to be completed in any of my games. :p
Seeing this fight in full speed is amazing. I mean, it took me forever to beat Tor, partly because of me sucking, and partly because of my crappy laptop's massive slowdown.
@blastmadness I can't promise there'll ever be another Iji game, but if I make one, I'd want the gameplay and characters to be completely different. But there are many other games I want to make before that happens.
@13gamerbullet You can check out my Normal mode speedrun on Speed Demos Archive for an example of how to get low times. reallyjoel's dad is actually in the game, and it's a joke difficulty. Hold the right arrow on the difficulty selection screen for five seconds, with Ultimortal unlocked. No, there's no Mia ending. She's dead when the game begins, and getting all the ribbons just makes Iji promise not to forget her.
I've been playing this game for years now but this boss on these settings, I just hate him. As much as I love a challenge, but sometimes he just combos his attacks in ways that are impossible to dodge and it just gets worse. I've only ever beaten him once like this, and now I've been trying him again for 2 hours. There's just always something that seems impossible to avoid and it happens over and over.
Super late reply but I read somewhere that Tor repeats attacks you have trouble dodging. Can’t dodge the purple shurikens? Lemme use them again... and again...
@iWATCHITT I made it, but not the music. Most of it was made by the guys now known as HyperDuck, with some help by Captain Goodnight and Tom Mauritzon. The full credits are in the manual.
I know, he's pretty much the king of the game. Someone told me they actually beat the "reallyjoel's dad" difficulty, but I think they were using GameShark.
You can jump over the first part of the attack, yes. I could give him three chargeballs at the start when he's maximum charge, but it'd suck for the player who doesn't figure out how to avoid it...
The farther Iji is to the right of the boss arena, the farther to the right Tor will fall down. The difference is obvious if you try standing on the very left edge, compared to the right edge (although Tor will land on top of you then). It's harder dodging the first few attacks if you stand too close to him when he lands, though.
I'm under the impression that the account this video was uploaded from is the creator of this game. I just want to say, thank you. Thank you for creating such a beautiful game. I finished this game and upon the end(I've reveled in such themes in game and out) was astounded and teared up by the raw emotion expressed by both parties. It was beautiful. Simply beautiful. People who have the ability to create such art such as this are the reason I haven't given up on life; thank you.
The minimum on Ultimortal is 1 kill, but the only difference between 0 and 1 is your ranking at the end (which doesn't unlock anything) and getting the secret weapon for Tor. I know some prefer it this way since the weapon makes the fight a lot easier, though it's optional.
I use this plugin, it uses data that was backed up before youtube removed annotations, so it does not have them for all videos, but most work, in my experience. chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/annotations-restored-for/daabpdmgkghdbfljmeahnplkcldbeefg
@Ultimortal I recently posted a pair of Iji videos - one for Sector X, and one for the boss fight (and yes, it is on max charge). The Sector X run contains a bug report, so you should at least look at that one. Just be warned that it also contains a fair amount of scrambler-related silliness.
I finished my second playthrough with just 2 kills, Krotera (sp?) and Asha. I found this little surprise and thought I'd treat myself to this uber boss. It was tough, but alot of fun. Thanks, Ultimortal!
If you're fighting him "properly", he doesn't get a chance to do it. After a few reflected "chargeballs", he loses his ability to fire it, instead using a lesser attack. It's basically a newb-killer move so you get the hint on how to defeat him sooner. :p
@Death2NewGods The easiest to make is probably space shooters like Gradius. Platform games are difficult due to the advanced collision detection. Tetris is good for learning the "maths" of programming, handling arrays and such. One of the most difficult types of game to make is probably fighting games due to the many little decisions, frame rules, collision handlings, graphics, not to mention balancing (which is never perfect). While I've had ideas, I don't think I'll ever make one of those.
I have to admit that the number of references and insistence on quality is what won me over to your games. ^^ Referencing a Miyazaki movie? Missingno? Star Fox? The list continues... What you said about being bored, somewhat, by your own game's lack of challenge ((for you, the creator))... when do you remedy that? Do you add that in once you've created the normal version of the game? Same question in regards to Easter eggs and sequence-breaks

@13gamerbullet It's literally impossible to pass Sector 1 on reallyjoel's dad, so there's no use trying.
Secondly, no, "reallyjoel's dad" isn't meant to be completed in any of my games. :p
Definitely one of the best games of all times. Thank you, Ultimortal!
Seeing this fight in full speed is amazing. I mean, it took me forever to beat Tor, partly because of me sucking, and partly because of my crappy laptop's massive slowdown.
Oh, It's Best Guy!
The names of Tor's attacks are in the unlockable Enemy info. There's no list that describes each one in detail, though.
@Netheraxe The full Iji source is on my homepage.
I just managed to beat normal Tor in ultimortal today. MC seems like a nightmare just because of the skysmashers.
You can reflect a charged shot even if it's orbiting Tor, I do this around 3:30 in the movie. It deals normal damage but is riskier.
Did I mention I come back to watch this video just to remember myself how awesome a game can be? I hope the creator succeeds in all future projects!
@blastmadness I can't promise there'll ever be another Iji game, but if I make one, I'd want the gameplay and characters to be completely different. But there are many other games I want to make before that happens.
No missile ponies for you, General.
Noooo! I scrolled all the way down here to find the original "reallyjoel's dad" comment, and it's gone!
Can confirm that a piece of history is lost to time.
@@Marluxiaify Dang, a boss actually learning how to screw you up? Smart guy
@iWATCHITT I made it, but not the music. Most of it was made by the guys now known as HyperDuck, with some help by Captain Goodnight and Tom Mauritzon. The full credits are in the manual.
@Jerails Just because it fell out of the game before doesn't mean it never returned.
I know, he's pretty much the king of the game. Someone told me they actually beat the "reallyjoel's dad" difficulty, but I think they were using GameShark.
@Kojeco2 There are green particles on the ground where they will emerge.
An excellent independent make. My compliments to the makers of this gem.
This game has the potential to be a good movie. Thank you for making this masterpiece. :D
I have this game on my website for ages. It's a pretty damn good and solid job. and now I realize you also have Doom levels at your site. interesting.
I like your annotations as speech bubbles at the very end. Reminiscent of the Scrambler.
Do you have the now-defunct annonations backed up anywhere?
Sorry, I don't. :(
I use this plugin, it uses data that was backed up before youtube removed annotations, so it does not have them for all videos, but most work, in my experience. chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/annotations-restored-for/daabpdmgkghdbfljmeahnplkcldbeefg
Get the old youtube layout plugin while you're at it.
I used Fraps 2.9.something - an issue with DirectDraw (which Iji uses) was fixed around that version I think. It could also depend on your system.
I love this game. You sir are amazing for making this. *subscribing*
Glad I could inspire you :)
Yes, it's 5 per sector and 50 in total, so it's fairly lenient. I know some accidents happen with turrets and shredders. :p
I don't know, you could try it. As far as I know, the optimal OS to natively play the game in is Windows 98.
@EReflexer 2: You can't actually reach Tor on reallyjoel's dad. If you could, probably a billion.
My god, this music and this scene makes Iji look so badass..
Its like it just screams out "Dont fuck with humans, dammit!"
@Ultimortal This is wonderful to hear from an indie game developer.
I enjoyed Hero and it's sequel, by the way. :)
Trying to wonder what the attack where the beam from the background blows up the ground.
That attack is from "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", confirmed by the developer :)
