- A TRIBUTE TO OUR DEAR COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND IYAD QASEM
Iyad Qasem was Pink Martini's booking agent for North Africa and the Middle East, and the lyricist for our song "Finnisma Di" (on the "Je dis oui!" album), but, most importantly, our treasured friend. He passed away from cancer at the age of 52 earlier this month, surrounded by his family and friends. A lion of the entertainment business who was an important television director in the Arab world, Iyad was also a passionate music fan. He had a vibrant spirit and a lust for life that touched all who came into contact with him.
In 2016, Iyad created new lyrics in Arabic for our bandleader Thomas Lauderdale's music to our original song "La soledad," which first appeared on our debut album "Sympathique." Iyad's lyrics beautifully explored the nostalgic sentiment of homesickness from an immigrant's perspective, at a time when the immigrant experience was becoming a dominant storyline of our recent times.
Our dear friend, NPR host Ari Shapiro recorded lead vocals for this new version the song on our 2016 studio release "Je dis oui!," and then in 2017, Pink Martini was incredibly privileged to be invited to perform at the legendary Beittedine Festival in Lebanon, where we were able to unite Ari Shapiro and Iyad Qasem on stage for a performance of "Finnisma Di." Iyad Qasem, in his introduction to the song, touches on the significance that it is performed by his friend, an American Jew.
We couldn't think of a better tribute to our friend Iyad than to release this video grabbed from the audience during the performance, presented here in the spirit of the peace and friendship that we wish for all people of all nations and religions, which can come from embracing our common humanity in this shared and beautiful world, a sentiment that was at the core of Iyad's soul. Rest in peace, friend.
The song is beautiful in any language. Music has no borders.
A gay Jewish American singing a song with Egyptian lyrics at a concert in Lebanon. Outside of Portland, I don't think you could get more Pink Martini than that. Cheers.
Combining one of Chopin's piano pieces with Latin rhythms and guitar, to boot.
And you forget to mention the person who wrote this song is a Palestinian 😊😊😊
Splendid. Delightful singer, wonderful words, love the piano and this is the band I would like to be listening to the very last of my days. One detail missing : the divine presence of Storm Large and China Forbes. I am in love with both these women - priestesses of a lawless muse!
Magic. Beautiful, thank you. Touches the soul.
PERFECT... Divine... Bravo and Bravisimo... Special and Different Song... Extraordinary... Celestial...

I only know Ari Shapiro as the cohost of NPR’s all things considered, up until this week, when I heard the wonderful interview with him with Terry Gross on fresh air! Never knew what a wonderful singer Ari, you are! 7:43

Harika ♥️
The music reminds me of Chopin, at least in the opening bars.
It is Chopin's Andante Spianato, opus 22
@@htang2298 Thanks, I am not a music connoisseur, but I am a Pole and, of course, Chopin is close to my heart.
💔🌿🕊

I don't think you've come to S Korea. Any plans to come to S Korea, well after the CCP pandemic.
We actually have been to South Korea, and loved it! We were at the incredible Korea Jazz Festival in Seoul last May. We hope to return again when we can!
@@PinkMartiniOfficial Last May! Where the hell was I? I am looking forward to seeing you, I promise.

Stick to journalism... Oof
I wish he would also have sung it in English
I would have preferred if an Arabic speaker sang the song it would have been way better, I couldn't understand a single word, anyway the music is magnificent
I don't know arabic but I'm thinking that would've made sense to have an arabic singer. Was it really that hard to understand because of the pronounciation or did the acoustics have something to do with it? Can you tell us what the lyric writer's mother said when they were sitting by the nicest lake in France even though it wasn't home for them? Thanks! 🤗
@@tinaperez7393 it’s because of the prononciation actually 😁, his mother said “there is no air like our countries’ air” so the songs name is “in this breeze”
Ari Shapiro sang this absolutely beautifully! Who cares what the language is! Music is a universal language. I extra appreciate that Ari sang this in Arabic. His voice is full of expressions, emotions, and beautiful! PS I am Palestinian American.
A Jewish, singing a Palestinian mother wish! Respect Shapiro with his beautiful soul and understanding!
