  • This video is a great example of how we turn a fairly short hike (that we expect to last a couple of hours) into an accidental 7 hour adventure. This happens a lot more than not as well...
On this wander, we are heading to the Jurassic Coast located in the south of England to explore a World War 2 ‘ghost village’ named Tyneham.
The village's history holds much sadness and heavy links to the war effort which plays a pivotal role in military training even today.
The entire region of Tyneham is still a military zone, so you are limited to where you can walk in the region. Live ammo shells are said to be still laying in the region, and you can even see several wrecked tanks which have clearly been used for target practice over the many years since the village was evacuated.
We will also decide to explore the windswept hills surrounding Tyneham. This involved visiting several small coves near the village including Pondfield Cove at Worbarrow Bay. Once climbing up a fairly steep hill nearby, we discover an old iron age barrow named Flower's Burrow which provides amazing 360-degree views around the entire area.
This is where we get a little sidetracked, and instead of looping back towards Tyneham Village, we head completely the opposite way towards Lulworth Cove, which is just a few miles away. Unfortunately, the few miles were ALL either going up steep hills, briefly walking on top of those steep hills, and then descending all the way down very dodgy staircases, only to then walk back up ANOTHER steep hill. Rinse and repeat!
We also had the opportunity to visit a fossil forest, which was located right next to Lulworth Cove. The fossil forest formed around 150 million years ago, when there was a drop in sea levels around the world. Trees were able to grow in areas that were once completely underwater, but over time the area re-flooded, and much of the forests were re-submerged in marshes.
As the water levels rose and the trees died, their logs and stumps were preserved in the sediment of boggy waters, eventually becoming the fossils you see here. You can even see gaping holes in the ground where some of these ancient trees once stood. The forest has been described as "one of the most complete fossilized forests of any age", making it a must-see if you are into your geology!
Lulworth Cove was right over the hill, so we decided to head straight there.
The cove itself is stunning, and it is considered one of the best places in the world to study geography due to the variety of rock and unique formations. It is hugely popular with tourists and locals, and has even been featured in films such as World War Z.
A large landslide took place at the cove earlier this year during a storm, preventing people from moving from one side of the cove to the other unless they had a boat. However, 6 months' worth of foot traffic has created a climbable path through the rocks, so we decided to head that way and VERY cautiously traverse through it to reach the main visitor centre.
After fighting our way through the crowds that were choking the entrance to Lulworth, we refilled our waterbottles and escaped back into the windswept hills!
