The idea that the catholic church was somehow influenced by demons in the 1600's to explain all the horrible things they did was something I once thought about but I never imagined that idea/theory would ever be displayed in a movie
You think a movie released in 2022/2023 was the only movie to ever explore this idea?

It's also severely incorrect. The Spanish Inquisition worked for the Spanish kings rather than Catholic Church, with popes actually protesting against its operations at the time.
The Spanish Inquisition was actually far more humane than secular courts since they were the only ones who offered due process to the point that many accused begged to be tried under the Inquisition

Idk how I feel about the whole taking the boy to a church or cathedral to do an exorcism. If you read the Bible you’d know what happened to the 2 people who went into the tent when Moses was speaking to god. Their sins caused them to die because god is the epitome of life and his holy power rejected them causing them to die….
That was because of the law. Jesus fulfilled the law. If thats the case then everyone who walks into a true church would perish because we all live with sin

Important note about the 6th commandment. "Thou shalt not kill" comes from later translations. I think it's the King James bible, but I can't find a definitive source on that. The original translations from Hebrew, and later Greek, specify "You shall not commit murder." All murder involves killing, but not all killing is murder. Killing in the context of raising and slaughtering livestock, or times where lethal force is justified are important distinctions from murder. Only certain sects like the Seventh Day Adventists take the literal meaning of the later version.
19:44 Tha would not be a good idea, as saying a demon's name is like an invitation, and probably many would not have bother, but reading so many names, could make more Demons to take a look and when realising that there was one of their overlords there already they might decide to help him, which would create more problems than solutions

@@Luminousreign Actually, I think knowing a demon's name is a great deal of course. However, if they start to call every name like the video suggested it, they most likely end up more demonic energy because of the present demon's power and tie to others and Hell. If there is a demonic presence in the place (and a strong one), demons tend to respond their name. So knowing a demons name is really a double--edged sword because of the unwanted attention if it chooses to use the power of the name for itself.

Its not that an invatation to other demons it kno calling out demon names is bad thats why they its a must to find the name insted of making things worst
it sounds good on paper, but remember when you call a demons name in this particular context, you are creating a link with them and you could be summoning them into the realm thus making everything harder for yourself. this is why it is incredibly important to conduct research to narrow down your list of suspects vs the throw everything at it and see what sticks. not to mention it could be as simple as the demon being insulted you would refer to it as one lesser then itself thus becoming enraged.

Not really killing him but the chapel would be connected to the abby, so technically not removing him but removing him would be to completely taking Henry away from the abby and the chapel.

There are many reasons to kill, but killing in cold blood is wrong. God sends the military to do his work countless times, but its not murder.

One BIG change that happened from Judaism to Christianity and Islam is that the latter two defined "justified killing" to include blasphemy and failure to convert. This led to millions of dead people across 5 continents and nearly 1500 years.

I suspect that whoever it was that tried to seal a demon in an Abbey, that they didn’t bother to have back to make sure that the seal was SEALED itself.
18:16. Earlier in the movie, Gabriel himself says that attempting to remove Thomas from the abbey could result in his death. So not really an oversight, as it was addressed previously.
Actually a chapel is a part of an Abbey.

In a way this movie inspires my faith and a lot of Christian’s/Catholics believe horror movies are simply evil but seeing Gabriel and Thomas’s faith helps me to understand Gods true power over demons like these
Agreed but Christians don’t like that fact that it’s not “really” accurate to real exorcism and movies like to over exaggerate things to make it more dark/violence
Nefarious was very accurate, the reason people saw it as boring was because they didn't use all of the stereotypical Hollywood tropes about demons and possession people are expecting when going to see a "horror" movie, the only realistic thing in here was the superhuman strength and sudden outbursts of violence.@@Saintvanillagorilla
Christians should have no fear of demons. Simply invoking Jesus' name and commanding them to leave will work. Unless you're not actually one of God's children. Then the demon will simply possess you instead.

Thou shalt not kill is actually a mistranslation resulting from Hebrew having two words for killing, one meaning murder, and one meaning a "righteous killing" eg self defense. It actually translates to thou shalt not murder when considering the original Hebrew word used.

The thing that always sticks out in my mind is from The Exorcist when Fr. Karras says, "I could detect three distinctive voices in the recording."
Fr. Mirren replies, "No. There is only one."
This was a subtle callback to the Biblical story of when Christ exorcized the possessed man and put the unholy spirit into the drift of pigs.
The spirit said, "We are Legion, for we are many." Christ knew better and could see through the lie.
The truth, if one believes the story, that Christ inherently knew that there are no demons or devils or imps and that Lucifer is all alone and only pretends to be among an army of minions to cope with the knowledge that he, alone, is the only angel cast from heaven.
He alone was the possessing spirit and that there is no other. When I watch possession movies I keep in mind that there is no Pazuzu or Beelzebub or Appollyon and that it is only one massively schizophrenic unholy being.
It makes it much creepier when you see him open a drawer and Fr. Karras says, "Did you do that? Do it again."

Lucifer doesn't need faith. He feeds on a lack of faith. Karras was losing faith, Reagan MacNeil never had faith. Chris MacNeil was an atheist.

Makes more sense when you recount on Judas’ torment. Lucifer was there for him not for Jesus, he knew that Judas would betray Jesus and hunted him down until succumbed to his torment. You would say that he was hallucinating before he hung himself but that’s all speculation

It isn't "thou shalt not kill". The correct translation is "thou shalt not murder" or "thou shalt not lie in wait". Because if Christians couldn't kill, by that logic, we cannot imbibe in meats in meals or take part in the military. I know it's not much of an argument, but "thou shalt not kill" is meant to be broken down logically. And the Bible is much simpler to understand than having to break things down. Generally, it means what it says. I may be wrong, but this makes more sense.

Thou shalt not kill applies to human life not animals. That’s why it’s also referred to as “thou shall not commit murder”. And why it’s not against the 10 commandments to kill animals (for consumption). Although he did order to have the pig killed for no reason (which is considered quite arbitrary) that doesn’t seem to go against that specific commandment. What it does go against is not abusing or mistreating animals. If the meat was used for a meal after the pig was killed then it’s “morally” not wrong.
Also even if they tied him up he probably could’ve untied himself. He’s shown to be telekinetic when he moves the crucifix.

For me is bit wierd because how do you know if the name of the demon that you are trying to get rid off is in that book and even if it there how can you be sure that the demon will have a break in his confidence and how do you know that all the names in the book are the right ones and not modified or i don't know miss spelled
