Some advice for ESL teachers: 1. You can model a simple self introduction so that the student is given an example of how to begin. And then ask them. 2. It's better to begin with simple questions about where they live, what they like, what they do. Asking, 'What do you want to be?' to a 15y.o. will typically require a lot of thinking time, because these kind of hypotheticals require thinking time even in a native language. 3. It's important to lead the lesson for students who are nervous, and give them support by structure, not just telling them to relax. A better way is to say, 'Don't be nervous, because it will make me nervous' or similar at the start. Try to make it something you can bond over, and show empathy. As soon as a student feels engaged in the conversation, and supported they stop being nervous. Just as they will start to become nervous again if they feel lost in what is said. Some advice for ESL students: 1. Begin with some basics about yourself. There's no need to jump to trying to think of questions to ask. 2. Respond to the answer the teacher gives you, 'You look older.' was a good example of showing comprehension and continuing the conversation, even though some people might find the comment a little impolite. Responding shows that you are listening. 3. Practice with simple follow up questions that are connected: e.g. student: Where are you from? teacher: I'm from New York. student: Oh great! Do you like New York? or... I'd love to go to New York one day. teacher: Yes, I do. student: What do you like about it? or... How long have you lived in New York? 4. You can practice basic introductions and questions based on that topic, to make the conversation sound less random. This kind of easy, smooth conversation will impress a teacher more than asking random questions that are not connected to the topic. e.g. I'm from [city] in [country]. Have you ever been to [city/country]? I am learning English. Can you speak any other languages? I started learning English 2 years ago. When did you start teaching English?
If I were her I wouldn't have booked another lesson after that introduction lesson. 1 She didn't seem nervous enough to warrant spending half the lesson telling her to relax. She certainly wasn't timid and I honestly had a question about who was the student and who was the teacher at first. 2 He didn't even properly explain the proper method to reduce stress by deep breathing. Your body tenses up when you inhale and relaxes with you exhale so the key is to take a quick breath in and and hold it, then let it out slowly. spend 10% of the time inhaling and 90% exhaling. 3 This is supposed to be an English class and they spent very little time on that. I'd spend a few minutes making a connection with the student by asking them about their favorite subject-themselves. I've done a lot of different things, I have varied interests and I've been to almost 60 countries so no matter what they bring up I'll either have a relevant comment or question to elicit more information from them. Once that's done, I'd point out and correct errors in pronunciation and grammar, encourage self-correction, offer alternative words to use, better ways to express themselves, new vocabulary related to their topics, and work of improving fluency, grammar and pronunciation through repetition or exercises.
I agree !!! Honestly I either get more anxious or irritated when someone keeps telling me to relax. For me, if someone repeatedly tells me to relax, they either have nothing much to say or they're concentrating too much on my nervousness instead of reflecting on what could it possibly be that they're doing or saying that's making me nervous. I'm not a teacher but I do wonder why he didn't mention the importance of note taking, review & practice. I'm also wondering why he didn't mention the fact that she will meet more English speaking people (who won't talk to her in other language) if & when she goes to an American university (which is actually the best way to learn english). I agree to an extent but you have to also factor in that this is a forced conversation with the goal of practicing the language itself. It's not a conventional social dialogue between two known parties with common interests. I'm looking to recommend an app/teacher to my cousin to help him learn English. Hard to know who/what to trust these days.
@yabadabadu I don't think it's a bad thing to tell people so. But, making it a condition first: "If you liked my tutoring, I'd be happy if you give me a good review, if you didn't that's fine..don't feel pressure" Something like that. Because a good review might help and some people might have liked the session but don't care or forget about giving a review. I don't know though about what rules the teaching sites might have...so yeah. But guilting people into giving a good review is bad yeah.

I’ve been using Cambly for 2 months, but I always feel reluctant to rewatch the history videos of me having conversations with the English tutors. Because most of the time I feel embarrassed watching myself. It’s very brave of you to rewatch it and upload it on RUclips. Your English is great and there’s a lot I can learn from you even though you are so young. keep up:)
it is natural to feel strange watching yourself recorded.. all the world suffer from this :) :) :) do not worry about that and imagine you are Tom Cruise :)
As an online English teacher myself, this tutor is making her feel way more uncomfortable and nervous than she already is. You make the student comfortable by talking to them casually, not by pointing out for them to be calm all the time or breathe... gosh.
It depends on person to person how he handles certain situation. And if something works for you doesn't mean it works for everyone. In this case she is a child too so being a senior he can ask her to be calm, your argument would be perfect if he was teaching someone his own age or older.
Yeah you need to keep things calm and casual. It does depend though students will list on their profile how much direction and correction they want. Some want to be corrected all the time, others not at all, so you do need to cater to their wishes.
big congratulations to the girl who is such a nice person and can turn what would have been a weird encounter into a nice and pleasant conversation. Girl, you are such a bigger person than your "tutor" !
Congratulations to this girl. She's very young but I think the teacher could be a little more friendly. I think he's as nervous as she is. As a teacher myself, I don't really mind when students speak more than I do, because what is important to me is that they practise their English and feel comfortable. The teacher is also young, I'm sure he is doing his best.
Congratulations!! I am 21 years old and watching your video make me remember myself in my fifteen years old and by that time my english was so bad. Now your english is really good, imagine when you will have my age, your english will be perfect :) Go ahead!!
I completely agree with the comments, you’re a fantastic student every teacher wants and fires questions at the teachers instead of the either way around :))
She’s so nervous but still enthusiastic and I actually think she’s really good already, she’s just nervous. I think he’s letting her speak first a lot as a way to just let her be so she can manage her nerves. Sometimes if we start off too much the student might be overwhelmed so I think he’s amazing at helping her through. Can clearly see why he’s the best. 😊

You pronounced words nicely. You speak very well at all, just need to practice listening, be familiar with a lot of word sounds, you know? And as you said, that was you first time in a real conversation with a native? Speak in front of the mirror or practice with your friend, it may help. Good luck🤗

I was talking so nonsense(?) And at the end of that video I understood even if you have so much confident and if you study hard and don't afraid to talk you will gonna be better one day P.S; I'm still learning sorry for my mistake in that paragraph :)
4:51 Come on! Your English skills are not poor. You sound almost like a native speaker. I know you will have success 👏🏼 Keep practicing! You are very smart and talented!
Ví dụ như thầy hỏi "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Cậu có thể trả lời là "I want to be a teacher in the future because being with children and watching them learn and succeed is my passion. And I love children, too. They're so adorable!" NEVER GIVE UP! Tặng cậu một câu mà tớ lượm được trên mạng "Sucess isn't about being the best. It's about always getting better". Chúc cậu thành công trong cuộc sống! xD.

Am I the only one who does NOT like this teacher? He does not correct her, does not really engage with her properly and does not really look like he cares about his job (just flipping around his hair all the time and looking to the side instead of looking at the student/screen). Also asking the student in the end for a 5 star rating is really unprofessional. He should have just asked for a rating or review. He shouldn't be telling her HOW to rate him. His advice on vocabulary memorizing method is also very poor. Also for example she said "I am too afraid" .. she clearly meant nervous. But he answered "whenever you become afraid, just breath". He should stop telling her to breathe and should correct her mistakes. Also. This student is a real blessing for every teacher. So many of my students just answer with yes and no and wait for me to ask them hundreds of questions. He could have worked so much better with such an active student. I would never get a class from this teacher tbh.
Read my comments somewhere above. I would immediately hang up the phone or computer if this man were the teacher. He is very irritating. I wrote more in a few comments above.
Also, always saying "relax" is sort of condescending. He should use her energy to his advantage, and make her feel at ease with HIS actions. He's the teacher.
I think teacher did good job , at the begging the student mentioned that it’s her first time to have conversation with foreigner and we can see her nervousness, teacher just try give him some confidence i learnt a lot from this video thanks for sharing
@@learnenglishandchinesewith9919 I agree and I think he was patient and people forget this is through conversational learning. He could have corrected her however, I believe if he did too much correction on her first trial she was already nervous and may not want to come back. This was a free trial for her and he did great.
With other languages, I think when people ask “what are you doing?” they mean in that moment. In English, it could mean in that moment or, like he said, in life. I remember when I was learning Spanish, I went to eat with my friends and I said to the waiter “no estoy comiendo” and my friends corrected me and said it was “no voy a comer.” In English, we would say to a waiter “I’m not eating” and that is implying that we are not going to eat. Plus it’s quicker than saying “I’m not going to eat.” Lol

3. Don’t be demanding.
4. Don’t tell the student to rate you 5 stars after rolling your eyes for 15 minutes.
5. Be calm myself before thinking of telling my student to breathe and calm down.

Hi dude which app you using this practice..
@@prakashn1740 it's Cambly
No offense but am I the only who find this video a bit cringy?
I agree to an extent but you have to also factor in that this is a forced conversation with the goal of practicing the language itself. It's not a conventional social dialogue between two known parties with common interests. I'm looking to recommend an app/teacher to my cousin to help him learn English. Hard to know who/what to trust these days.
No. Im torturing myself here. However I think she isnt that bad.
@yabadabadu
I don't think it's a bad thing to tell people so.
But, making it a condition first: "If you liked my tutoring, I'd be happy if you give me a good review, if you didn't that's fine..don't feel pressure"
Something like that.
Because a good review might help and some people might have liked the session but don't care or forget about giving a review.
I don't know though about what rules the teaching sites might have...so yeah.
But guilting people into giving a good review is bad yeah.
You look older hahaha that part was the most cringy thing
@lost soul... No, I am sure many people share your opinion. If this guy is a teacher, I feel sorry for the students.

It was kind of sad the number of times I saw that guy rolling his eyes. I'd not like to have a teacher like that.
Agreed. I understand some of it is just personality but it does help to be a little bit more friendly and disarming. Especially for a young student.
@@nutyyyy Yeah, also, the way he talks just sounds so robotic and lifeless. I understand that talking slowly can help students understand what's being said, but the good teachers I've seen still put emotion into the words, so that it sounds like they're talking to a human being, and it also teaches proper intonation.
4:50 that was the least reassuring "don't worry" I've ever heard in my life. I see people talk to siri with more emotion lmao

I’ve been using Cambly for 2 months, but I always feel reluctant to rewatch the history videos of me having conversations with the English tutors. Because most of the time I feel embarrassed watching myself. It’s very brave of you to rewatch it and upload it on RUclips. Your English is great and there’s a lot I can learn from you even though you are so young. keep up:)

As an online English teacher myself, this tutor is making her feel way more uncomfortable and nervous than she already is. You make the student comfortable by talking to them casually, not by pointing out for them to be calm all the time or breathe... gosh.
My thoughts entirely!
Totally. This guy's like "I'm so patient" then rolls his eyes and tells student her to slow down
@@sammiller3512 I initially thought that, but I noticed that it's part of his mannerism.

It's so funny this intervew hahahah relax...relax ...relax
Ví dụ như thầy hỏi "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Cậu có thể trả lời là "I want to be a teacher in the future because being with children and watching them learn and succeed is my passion. And I love children, too. They're so adorable!"
NEVER GIVE UP! Tặng cậu một câu mà tớ lượm được trên mạng "Sucess isn't about being the best. It's about always getting better".

I feel so bad for agreeing with this. I'm an ESL teacher, too, and a student like this is indeed a blessing, hehe.
Take a deep breath and learn 20 word everyday as well as think your English is improving 😂
^^
With other languages, I think when people ask “what are you doing?” they mean in that moment. In English, it could mean in that moment or, like he said, in life. I remember when I was learning Spanish, I went to eat with my friends and I said to the waiter “no estoy comiendo” and my friends corrected me and said it was “no voy a comer.” In English, we would say to a waiter “I’m not eating” and that is implying that we are not going to eat. Plus it’s quicker than saying “I’m not going to eat.” Lol
I laughed a lot, 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 this conversation is really fun I like it
