I would really like to know if the paddle shifters were used while in the automatic. If the car is faster in drive mode without the need for paddle shifters, why add the paddle shifters to begin with? I have my own answer to that question. The 5th gen Camaro goes into a 4-cylinder mode whilst in drive to save gas. When you put the car in manual mode and activate the paddle shifters, it is V8 all the way. Shifting while turning is a different story.
In my 98 Supra and my 14 Genesis, the car is MUCH faster when in paddle shift mode over normal Drive .. not sure why though 🤔 and cant find that answer anywhere
Pretty good results for the 8 speed auto, considering it's completely stock and that track is 1145 ft elevation. Run that same auto at a track near sea level in similar weather conditions it should do 12.0x
There is no way my WRX would be able to keep up with these cars soon. Turbo upgrade is my goal and with a few mods the SS will stomp on me! It is crazy seeing them that light and with that much power.
Being a pro drag racer doesn't necessarily make someone great at racing a manual. Essentially all high end drag cars are automatic with big stalls, which is nothing like launching on a clutch, and also shifting manually fast. From the clips shown I can certainly shift faster than their pro did.
are the 2010s the same with the Auto being faster? i know the auto SS had an l99 engine while the manual had the ls3. idek about these. anyone have any insight?
You are correct on the LS3 vs L99. The 5th gen manual Camaros were quicker than the automatics because they had more power. Albeit, you need a driver who can row through the gears in the manual. Like in any car, an inexperienced driver with a manual transmission will lose against most of its automatic counterparts.
808sand Blvke Yep. All 6th Gen Camaro SS, auto or manual, come with the same engine, the 455hp LT1. The hp deficit for the automatic is gone, ergo, quicker 1/4 mile than the manual. :) Humans just cannot shift as quickly as a machine.

Utter slaughter and devastation if this was the 2019 or 2020 Camaro SS with the 10 speed automatic versus the 6 speed manual. How is a 12.9 second for the 6 speed SS( weight 3,685 pounds) any different from the 2020 Camaro V6 with the 10 speed automatic( weight 3,354 pounds)?
Test drove both the Auto and the Standard Camaro SS. The standard is a smooth shifting transmission but the clutch is a bit weighted towards the top of the movement. The Auto-8 is superb in this car, it is very quick shifting and is perfectly matched to the power curve of the motor. I went with the Auto-8 as the manual gives no advantage over the Auto...is in fact inferior to the Auto in everything but price.
When you get into the power that the SS makes, the automatics have a real advantage. I'm really surprised that the auto didn't have more of a lead, but it seemed that it always got that lead off the line, then they were dead even. Much more effecient at putting the power down from a stop. I bet in a road course, or if they were accelerating from a roll, the manual would be equal if not have the advantage. Still though, the manual is more fun, and well, put some sticky tires on the back of there and I think the advantage would go the other way.

no excuses here. people put manuals transmissions up against automatics in the worst way possible. it takes more than 1 or 2 passes hell even ten pass down the track to achieve better times in a manual transmission. that and people not knowing the cars power band along with that to go with crap launches kill 1/4 mile times. the manual should be quicker of the line if the driver could launch at a high rpm. however with the amount of power in todays cars it makes it hard to and traction becomes an issue. dump the clutch, pull of a good 60 ft and get a set of slicks and the manual should be just as quick as the auto. and fyi there are cars that get better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times wth the manual trans so the car is also a factor.

Maybe auto are faster but with a manual trans you're more involved and it's more fun as a daily unless you only drive in the city with heavy traffic and lights everywhere plus it's cheaper and easier to repair.
Up until the early 2000's Manual was always faster if the driver was good. Older automatics are just horrible especially 60's and 70's autos. Surprisingly the first autos(1950s) aren't half bad but for drag racing they wouldn't be good.

stating how 60s muscle could not cut it, Chevy BBH , Ford ,Hemi etc, flow on newer small block engines , is whats different and tires along with twice as many gears, match components being all ewqual and equal results , just look at record holder small Blocks for NHRA Stock class, 10s are easy for most small blocks
Whats sad is this the old 8 speed automatic. Imagine they had a rematch in the 2019 Camaro that has the 10 speed.
Jeff you powershifting? LT1 is designed for it.
Sucks for the person that bought those ragged out SS's! I would be pissed if I found out my car got ragged like this?
I have driven manual all my life. I kinda hate that soon everything will be auto
Looks like the manual was trapping slightly higher.
Yeah, I was seeing the same thing. Funny that at the end of the video we got 1/4 mile times to 2 decimal places but they rounded the trap speed to the nearest MPH. My gut feeling tells me that the Manual is trapping higher due to probably putting more power down.
i want one!!!
Maybe auto are faster but with a manual trans you're more involved and it's more fun as a daily unless you only drive in the city with heavy traffic and lights everywhere plus it's cheaper and easier to repair.
+krannification I live smack dab in the middle of L.A., and manuals are still more fun to drive . . .
He just said he's not used to driving stick. He may be a great driver, but can he Drive it to its ptoential.
knew it silver is a killer am getting it 😍
"these days" automatics were always quicker at the strip.
Stock autos out of the showroom were always slower than their manual counterpart
+dilsher12 Not anymore. The 8speed auto C7 is also quicker than the manual C7
iCool247 autos were always quicker on the drag strip.
Lol, no they weren't.
Up until the early 2000's Manual was always faster if the driver was good. Older automatics are just horrible especially 60's and 70's autos. Surprisingly the first autos(1950s) aren't half bad but for drag racing they wouldn't be good.
Its 2016... Automatics are the shit (even for some car enthusiasts like me) But paddle shifters are awesome as fuck
Wow these sixth gens are impressive. My cammed 5g has about 100 more (crank) horsepower than these and I'm still in the 12's.
traction control..lol a idk
Yeah, I actually did leave it in competition mode instead of turning everything off. Oops.
These cars a fast though
Utter slaughter and devastation if this was the 2019 or 2020 Camaro SS with the 10 speed automatic versus the 6 speed manual. How is a 12.9 second for the 6 speed SS( weight 3,685 pounds with the engine chugging to its 6500 rpm redline) any different from the 2020 Camaro V6 with the 10 speed automatic( weight 3,354 pounds and absolutely blitzing its 7000 rpm redline in a heartbeat)?
What i dont understand is how these 8 or 9 or 10 speed auto's faster than say a 4 or 5 speed automatic ??
I feel the 8, 9, 10 speeds would shift too fast while the 4 or 5 speed would have more mph per gear.
Yeah I have those F1 G:2's in a 305/35/20, things are $450 a pop. Isn't the most expensive tire, but it's enough lol
don't use the clutch ram it in every gear
The new Chevy LFA, I mean GTR, I mean transformer...
GTR looks like the Camaro not the other way around.
+Auto Young umm, GTR re released in 2007, Camaro re released in 2010...
+383mazda
2009 but that's besides the point. What the heck are you talking about? The cars never looked alike until just now. I'm talking about the cars that were just released and I'm pretty damn sure the 6th gen Camaro released before the new re designed GTR which came out what 2 weeks ago?
Still looks like a camaro to me, gtr looks more like the LFA tbh and and so does the FRE
+Daniel Oh
You can't tell me the just released GTR doesn't look like this car in the front. The wide opening, the way it swoops forward on the front above the DRL's and intakes. Hell, those even look the same.
i love this
i just drove a manual for the first time today, and starting up is terrible for me, but everything else is easy. CAR PEOPLE tell me what is so much better about manual?
holy fuck.
a 12.2 @115 isn’t bad at all out of a ‘16 8spd SS!
Love It
