"...elected to be candidates"?!? That really doesn't fit either of those women. Bernie was winning the primaries until the DNC told him to sit down in favor of Hillary. Kamala was anointed to run for president by the DNC and yet Kamala famously lost every presidential primary she ran in...and ultimately this election.

I think Niall is wrong about the "Hillary would have walked in" in 2008 comment.
First off, the pattern is fairly consistent. The US electorate tends to swing like a pendulum between Democrat and Republican administrations. They don't tend to follow up like with like.
That's the first point in the Democrat candidate's favor in 2008.
Second, by 2008, a lot of Americans were getting fatigued by war and sick of war hawks like Dubya, Cheney and Rumsfeld. And the Republicans put forward a war hero (and war hawk), John McCain. Oh great. More war. Not that they didn't get stuck with plenty of war under Obama, but he gave the impression he'd be different.
Third, Hillary was part of the previous administration. People were becoming disenchanted with Obama. Romney did a LOT better in 2012 than McCain in 2008, both in terms of EC votes and the popular vote.
Fourth, Hillary was Secretary of State under the Obama administration. A lot of people on the left were getting tired of the Obama administration, particularly its foreign policy. Which is a State Department thing.
Fifth, there's a difference between an easy win ("walking in") and a landslide. Obama got 365 EC votes in 2008, and carried the popular vote by 7 points over McCain. Hillary wouldn't have done that well, but she'd have walked in no problem.
In 2016, the pendulum pattern kicked in. Sure, not as hard as it did after Dubya. Trump squeaked in and lost the popular vote. But Hillary winning in 2016 would have been something that almost never happens. Whereas her winning in 2008 would have been something that almost always happens.

I’m not a big fan of Bill as a left populist critical of the overly pro Wall Street third Way, Democrat movement, but I think bill is absolutely correct that Barack Obama absolutely just walked in with no federal government experience and was elevated to messianic status. I think I can honestly say that because I fell for it and you know what it did have something to do with the combination of him saying some of the right things and very much being symbolic because he was a partially black man, and that would mean the United States is transcending this original sin of racism . Yeah, chew on that for a second.

There's a sense of humility too with even Bill Clinton & Barrack Obama. They ran their campaigns to win, didn't take it for granted. I remember reading that Hillary's team didn't consider Bill's advice to campaign in the blue wall states which ended up costing her the election.

Clinton LOVED being called the first black president back in the day. I was a kid, I remember that term used on him. He loved to appear as the coolest and the smartest. THEN Obama came in and stole his thunder. I'll bet it hurt his ego to hear people call Obama the first black president when Clinton was so proud of that title when he had it. I'll bet all the saxophone solos he played around the time of Obama's inauguration were sad. Anyway, I've always noticed a quiet fued with those 2 men.
