I think Niall is wrong about the "Hillary would have walked in" in 2008 comment. First off, the pattern is fairly consistent. The US electorate tends to swing like a pendulum between Democrat and Republican administrations. They don't tend to follow up like with like. That's the first point in the Democrat candidate's favor in 2008. Second, by 2008, a lot of Americans were getting fatigued by war and sick of war hawks like Dubya, Cheney and Rumsfeld. And the Republicans put forward a war hero (and war hawk), John McCain. Oh great. More war. Not that they didn't get stuck with plenty of war under Obama, but he gave the impression he'd be different. Third, Hillary was part of the previous administration. People were becoming disenchanted with Obama. Romney did a LOT better in 2012 than McCain in 2008, both in terms of EC votes and the popular vote. Fourth, Hillary was Secretary of State under the Obama administration. A lot of people on the left were getting tired of the Obama administration, particularly its foreign policy. Which is a State Department thing. Fifth, there's a difference between an easy win ("walking in") and a landslide. Obama got 365 EC votes in 2008, and carried the popular vote by 7 points over McCain. Hillary wouldn't have done that well, but she'd have walked in no problem.
