Something I love about the duel with Riku on the island is how genius it is. The win-lose count affects literally nothing in the game, but OUT of the game? It makes you care. It makes you obsess. It is a perfect way to make you, the player, really feel the rivalry with Riku on a personal level so effectively, and in a way that never feels annoying or manipulative or obvious.
It’s also the perfect combat tutorial since he is super challenging. If you can reliably beat riku on the island you are good for a while in terms of combatt
@@colevakamusic He's not challenging (even on proud mode and even if you give up the shield) if you pay attention to how he works. He only ever does his kick forward after the 4th time you hit him, so if you plan for that he will literally never hit you with it and you can win easily. It just happens that apparently nobody else figured that out. I recognize patterns easily so I caught it right away as a 12 year old and never lost a fight to him after the first few. (Fun fact: Sephiroth does the same thing. He teleports away after the 4th time you hit him, allowing you to predict it and avoid his counter attack.)
@@kingofbudokai It's amazing how bad some people are at pattern recognition, especially. Modern gamers are spoiled by all the hand-holding, to the point that in the kind of games those of us who abhor excessive guidance grew up with completely confuse them. They expect a glowing light to show them the right way to go, and an in-your-face tutorial blurb to pop up whenever something new happens, and when they don't get it they fumble around.
Did people really struggle to figure Riku out even back when this game first came out? I'm the same as you. My first playthrough I had five losses against Riku when I finished Destiny Islands, and that was including a failed retry of the race.
It is annoying tho how sora can be interrupted by the trees and can fall off the stage but riku cant. But hey, thats one of the many reasons why KH2's combat was far more refined
@@kingofbudokai Unfortunately, my guy, he does slightly change his pattern. However you can tech block every move he has if you felt like it. He really is a simple mechanic fight but if you're a new player then 9/10 times you're gonna lose it, especially if you aren't familiar with these types of games.
I love how everyone calls Ansem's guardian "Come Guardian". One voice line that shaped a fanebase.

Winnie the Pooh was the best part of this game, imo. You get all these intense scenes and dramatic boss battles and heart wrenching twists, you need to unwind with low stakes adventures and games with friends who love you just for being who you are, not because you are a keyblade wielder.
I wish Frankie put more of those scenes in the video.🥺
Still, it was a fun ride.

The first Kingdom Hearts scared me like a Don Bluth film as a kid. Hearing that Disney worlds and characters were being consumed by darkness, the game getting gradually more dramatic in tone as it goes on. The big, epic scope and the amazing score. Especially as it got to the final worlds where the princesses warned Sora about great darkness and how we basically went through the levels of hell to get to Ansem - fighting the literal devil Chernabog on the way. And Ansem’s final boss fight in hell was awesome and terrifying, having to fight your way through and reuniting with your friends. You know how bad you’ve gotta be to still be a worthy final boss after Chernabog??
Stumbled on this video. Almost 40 yrs old here enjoying and reminiscing about one of my favorite games of my childhood. Glad you enjoyed the game as many of us.

I swear to god like 90% of why the race is so BS is because if you keep holding forward on the analog stick after grabbing the zipline Sora will jump off. Even beyond not knowing the route the first time you play, even just that still messes me up, lmao

Halloween town has to be one of the best worlds of both KH1 and KH2. It is simply relaxing to be there and sit around and fight heartless with the halloween clothes lol

i love this series so much;i still play it too this very day,its amazing how many good games got there start on the Ps2 and 2 was way ahead of its time including more content in the final mix versions of the games and more cutscenes weopons and having a boss rush arena and an extra form just for KH1 skin in the game and 3 and 3d were also really great as well i love every one deerly and i cant wait until Kingdom Hearts 4 comes out

i remember the first time i played this on ps2 back when it came out, i played with myself and 4 other sisters, it was such a new experience for us all, with a disney twist it was just so magical running into disney characters we grew up watching, and every time we finished a world we'd guess what's next, it was amazing, definetly one of a kind!

Ngl, I'm rather impressed you beat that race first go at the start. Riku is pathed to take the most direct route unless you can cut him off at certain shortcuts. It is notoriously hard to get that on a blind run. Much props

I just finished the video… you are so cute. Reminds me of how I felt when I first played the game… and watching you now is making me feel similar to the way you did watching Sora. “He’s a pure boy”, and he is, but now I get a layer of “she’s a pure girl” on top. 😂 Your video is quacking brilliant, I love it.
You probably know this by now, but I wanna point these out because they're amazing details for this game. No spoilers. I saw how far you are in the story lol.
The slideshow you see in Deep Jungle (Tarzan's world) shows a castle that Sora finds to be oddly familiar. This is Hollow Bastion, but specifically it's Ansem the Wise's castle back when it was Radiant Garden, which you can see in that state in Birth By Sleep. Sora reacts to it because Kairi recognizes the castle in some way, and she was in Sora's heart.
Another interesting bit is the intro tutorial, the dive into the heart. The stained glass represents a heart you are in, with the image of whose heart it is on the glass. The 3 are Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora. If you look carefully at the colors, these coincide with the colors of the wayfinders of Terra, Aqua, and Ventus. You can even see them drop these and have them turn into the stained glass during the intro for Birth by Sleep. So, Sora is basically diving into their hearts through his unique ability to connect with hearts (as his did with Ventus when he was first born) and used it to help stave off the darkness. Darkness cannot exist in the hearts of a Princess of Light, but it was showing that they were in the clutches of darkness.
These are the same 3 princesses you encounter and help in Birth by Sleep.
And this can be seen later in the game. Near the end, as you're about to face Ansem where there's almost nothing left, there's a cave/hallway with details on the walls. You see bits of the worlds of Cinderalla, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, showing that they did indeed fall to darkness at some point between Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 1.
They also had planned for Xion's creation back at this point, to some degree. When you fight the Enigmatic Figure (Xemnas) super boss, the opening scene has him walk through SOra with a flash of words going all over the screen. These are memories - memories that Xemnas sampled which aided in the creation of Xion. And right after this meeting, Xemnas ran into Roxas in front of the mansion of Twilight Town. The only case of a Nobody existing at the same time as their original self (aside from time travel shenanigans) due to Roxas' formation being the result of Ventus' heart also being within Sora's, along with Kairi and how Sora was restored.
I also don't think Namine is Kairi's Nobody, exactly. A Princess of Heart has no darkness within her. She can't create a Nobody. The same would be true for Ventus. Sora was like the medium. Roxas is in Ventus' likeness, but is technically not his Nobody. Somehow this combination of 2 hearts of pure light within his own allowed for the formation of both Roxas and Namine, who are either in the likeness of or the shadow of individuals who can't create Nobodies.
