Railroad Turntables in use in Nova Scotia

  • At the beginning of 2000, I believe that only two railroad turntables were still operational in Nova Scotia. Both had been electrified by CN and were located in Halifax and Sydney. The Sydney turntable was owned by Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) and was in very poor condition. It was used to turn a few CBNS locomotives and VIA's weekly (summer only) train "Bras d'Or". The Halifax turntable located at the Fairview maintenance centre was in better condition and was used frequently to turn locomotives used on the daily freight train before it returned to Montreal and on local services.

Very interesting video. It's so fun to watch the heavy mechanical operations that most of us never even think about.

Yes - especially when you consider that the engineering was designed over 150years ago and originally powered by steam!

I notice in all cases the operators moved the turntable counter-clockwise. Was that coincidence, or standard procedure?

Great shots. Is the turntable at Fairview still there?
Do you know when the turntable by the VIA station was dismantled? I used to go there in the late 80s to go to see the 'turning' of the VIA's cars

+André S I am not sure but I would have guessed mid to late 1980s posibly when the maintenance shops were built or when Halterm balloon track was built.

+David Othen it sounds right, thanks

+André S BTW the Fairview Turntable is still in use whenever a loco needs turning - the nearest wyes are at Milford & Truro and there is a balloon track at Halterm. Hence it is likely to be kept operational for the foreseeable future.

+David Othen Thanks. When I was living in Halifax in the late 80s, I had a cab ride in the VIA locomotive, when they turned the train on the balloon track. Another question, a while ago, you had a video of the OCEAN that had to back up all the way to Truro and turned there, since the baloon track was non-operational. Could they have used the WYE at Milford instead of going all the way to Truro?

+André S VIA had planned on turning at Milford but overnight CN left some cars on one leg of the wye!
I have been around the balloon track several times - on board a loco, in a private car on the rear of the Ocean, in a renaissance car on the Ocean and at VIA Safety Day several times last year!!

I had a Bachmann model of 6136 but it didn't look like the real thing

Sadly, the Sydney turntable was cut up for scrap by G&W, it is now a duck pond.

+keiichi902 Thanks for the update. This makes Fairview the last operating turntable in the province.

Jim Hyslop The pit has since been filled in, not even the ducks are happy now.
