Remixing/arranging is a skillset of its own and Yamamoto clearly has it. Why didn’t he just try to get permission from the original artists and agree to share royalties? Surely at least some of these guys would’ve been thrilled to have a new generation introduced to their work?

That's because of the feelings of the songs. You can't compare them when they don't transmit they same messages and emotions. In this one you can feel the importance of keep fighting till the end. Hunting high and low is more about searching for the real purpose in life and enjoying life till the end (avoiding living a monotonous and boring life)
