Very interesting, as are all of your videos. I probably represent a minority who never ever writes in their books. I like my books empty of notes. I do take a lot of notes, but always in my dedicated notebooks. Thank you for sharing your system!

Thank you, I am pleased to know you find it interesting. It's perfectly fine to keep your books clean 📚. I myself write most of my notes in the commonplace book or in my Literature Notebook. Glad we came across. 😊

Thank you so much for sharing! I pencil my books so much, especially when I read books rich in content and feel like highlighting each sentence but don’t want to do it. You have me idea of creating my own code now. Thank you for sharing!

Oh wow, This is very interesting, normally I struggle to write on books, but, it’s something I’m doing a little more, recently.
This book looks fantastic btw! I’m intrigued. X

Hey my dear Raffaela. I know about that struggle and it also depend on the book 😉. As for me I got used to it from school time (leave my fingerprint on it) ☺️☺️. I will make a video about how to take notes, specially when you don’t annotate.

I used to write in my books frequently in college. Now the only printed publications I write in frequently is my sheet music, and always in pencil. Only if there is a correction for a misprint is the notation is made in ink. But even then I notate the date(s) I studied the piece, fingerings, bowings, and interpretive notes.

Interesting concept to annotate your music sheets. You can come up with your own Annotation keys 😊

I admire your handwriting as well as your artistic skills in elaborating all your notebooks. I was wondering, what kind of pen(s) you prefer? I enjoy writing with a fountain pen, but it is a bit high maintenance.

    • @journaldesylvie
      @journaldesylvie  Год назад +1

Thank you so much! the handwriting is a matter of practice (although not perfect if you zoom in 😂). I like the italic style and there are some notebooks designed to improve calligraphy. As for the pens, I am afraid I don't use fountain pens (may be one day). Currently I write with:
      Tombow Zoom 505 Rollerball 0.5mm
      Pentel Radio Pulaman Pen (black)
Pentel Gel Ink Ballpoint Pen ENERGEL Clena 0.5mm (brown and black)
      hope this helped!

Thank you very much for sharing your marginalia symbols with us! You're one of the few ones who talk about this!
I use different symbols to engage with my reading material: "?" where the author describes his thesis (either for the entire book or a chapter) or asks us readers a question, a "star" where the author gives the answers, numbered if it's more than one answer. (Because "!" means important.) A triangle ∆ for definitions. Numbers to follow the steps the author outlines. A lightbulb 💡 for aha moments I had while reading. A lightning ⚡️ for "something's not adding up / looks like the author contradicts himself / I disagree with the author", usually with a comment why I think so. Arrows pointing to an earlier page ⬅️ or later page ➡️, plus the page number to reference across the entire book - very helpful in fiction where you sometimes have "huh? did this character really say / do this? where did I see this?" moments. "Qu." for quotes, a pencil ✏️ for beautifully written passages, "V" for vocabulary, "R" for recommendations or sources the author mentions that I find interesting.
I keep track of them in the front of the book - just the symbol and the page numbers. The back is reserved for summaries.
Btw, this elaborate key evolved :) Years ago I started with !, ∆ and comments in the margins. Then I read Mortimer Adler's "How To Read A Book" and, since it completely blew my mind, added the rest bit by bit.

Good ideas. I keep a reading journal but haven't been annotating, it makes a lot of sense! I learned many years ago in my history class that the dark ages were named that way because they began with the closing of Plato's Academy, I don't know if that is still considered to be the case but it's something that has stuck in my mind.

When I was in college 20 years ago, I learned the middle ages fallacy. I would tell people and they would look at me weird and pretend they didn't hear what I said. I should have collected references.
The really interesting thing was Vikings I guess were quite sophisticated. They had visual and literary arts, and what something that resembled Democracy.
