- A fantastic 1967 documentary by Albert Gendelshtein titled 'Dmitri Shostakovich - Sketches for a portrait of the composer'. There's a lot of rare footage in this. In addition to Dmitri, there's footage of his son Maxim Shostakovich, Leonid Kogan, Sviatoslav Richter, Galina Vishnevskaya, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Evgeny Mravinsky, and a re-creation of the legendary concert in which Karl Eliasberg conducted the seventh symphony. Если кто то на западе, да и вообще в мире, углубится и захочет понять историю СССР, то ни что лучше не прольет свет на понимание переживаний русских людей того времени, чем музыка Дмитрия Шостаковича.
Мне кажется, чтобы слушать и понимать музыку Шостаковича нужна смелость и страстность. Именно такими были современники Дмитрия Дмитриевича - и дирижёры, и музыканты и слушатели. Нынче не каждый осмелился и осилит заглянуть в такую глубину.
Им все равно нас не понять!!! А нам их..

I don't know about you: Shostie's First Symphony is absolutely earth shaking in its orchestration, its themes, its position in Shostie's composing career.
Yes, his later symphonies go beyond earth shaking, but the purity of message and the beauty of its themes makes the First Symphony colossal in Shostie's
repertoire of magnificence and brilliance!
What a wonderful film. In our time where culture is becoming increasingly marginalised, commoditised and, in a way, abolished, it is so refreshing to seen an excellent film about a great artist in the middle of society, who is truly relevant and needed by an enormous and cultured audience.

Понять по партитуре его можно, биографично также, но как человека труднее всего. Как и самого Малера, почитаемого Шостаковичем

Этот фильм на части делить надо, а то в конце каждого эпизода его жизни слезами обливаешься, не успеваешь отойти, а впереди ещё пол фильма...
Я была далека, а теперь слушаю, чувствую, спасибо. Страшно было видеть дорогу в больницу на машине скорой помощи. Радость, что вышел Дмитрий Дмитриевич на приветствие к зрителю. Браво! Фильм полный музыки, любви к замечательному человеку, композитору Дмитрию Дмитриевичу Шостаковичу!

Как ни парадоксально, но советский фильм о Шостаковиче гораздо интереснее и содержательнее любого снятого о нём в наше время. И сделан несравненно боле мастерски.
Просто смысловая нагрузка того периода жизни,связанного с диктатурой,ложится на наиболее актуальные,моменты тех,адских времен.Сохранилась аутентичность тех событий!Но,необходимо считаться и,с современными взглядами,на его творчество!
Какая же это прекрасная музыка! Это чудо)

wonderful documentary!! It's great to see and hear the originals. (only one remark Mravinsky was directing the finale of Shostakovich's 5th symphony there and not the 1st)

This documentary ends with Shostakovich being rushed to a hospital. I suppose this was after his heart attack in 1966 (given that the documentary was made in 1967).

At 22.32 the subtitle should read the Fifth symphony (conducted by Mravinsky), not the First.
Wish for subtitles, but could someone ID the Professor? Also, the musicians when he was playing one of his compositions on the piano.
If you provide the times you want to check, it'll be easier for people
wrong subtitres: 6:26 - it has to be "Solvertinsky" instead of "Vertinsky" (singer).

Brilliant, even though I don't speak Commie... err, I mean Russian. Never seen this. You look at Shotakovich and his quiet unassuming way and you just wonder about all the things going on in his head. Genius. The public premiere of the 5th Symphony must have been nerve racking for him knowing Stalin would hear it and probably figuring out what it could be 'enunciating'.
Just as an aside, the narrator of this reminds me of the voice who did Hedgehog in the Fog - which is a great animation to seek out if you've never seen it.
+Man Beadle oh I love that beautiful animation. It's funny to think of the gentle-voiced narrator guiding a doc on Shostakovich :) I suppose you know Norshtein's Tale of Tales, a film I love as much as anything Tarkovsky directed. Speaking of films, have you seen the recent Hungarian holocaust film Son of Saul? I think it (though am not sure) has been widely distributed. I saw it at a film festival last November and I thought it was absolutely incredible -- kind of first-person shooter view with just constant near-death intensity. Really recommend it, especially on a big screen.

I haven't seen Son of Saul, but I looked up some trailers and clips and then read the comments below... sometimes reading RUclips comments is like turning over a rock and seeing all the insects scatter from the light. It seems like a film that has Holocaust deniers angry. If it pisses off that ilk I may find it interesting and worthwhile.
***** So it isn't well known that people were being taken away at night during the period when it was premiered and Shostakovitch by some accounts, including his own, had problems with his nerves. Or that the Symphony is identified by numerous conductors who understand the piece as a defiant response to what was happening in his country (Bernstein, Valery Gergiev among others). Yes, I'm 'making things up'. Thank you for the condescension but you can happily retain it for yourself when required.
There is a distinction between supporting the revolution and the Stalinist dictatorship. Shostakovich makes it clear he was a supporter of the Russian people and their revolution in his 15th Symphony.
