🔥 Answering the Call of Our Youth 🔥
A little more than a year ago, a call to action came when my great-grandfather’s house-rich with history and legacy-was put up for sale. Freely “Fish” Calhoun, a veteran and the first Black homeowner in College Station, also founded the county’s first Negro baseball team. While we fought to save his home, it was the gathering of family and community that truly sparked our movement.
During that time, the younger generation spoke up, expressing their need for support, guidance, and connection. They voiced their desires for closeness and unity, reminding us that we must be there for each other. It became clear: the house was just the catalyst that brought us together; the real focus is answering the call of our youth.
Out of this collective desire for change, the New Generation Committee was born. We formed this group to use our gifts, talents, and voices to make a lasting difference in the lives of the youth in our communities.
Back Home is not just a song-it’s our anthem, a reminder for all of us to reconnect with our roots, rebuild our communities, and uplift the next generation. This song serves as the theme for our upcoming workshop, Tune In To Our Youth: Let’s Make Hip-Hop and Rap Music Great Again, where we’ll harness the power of hip-hop to inspire, educate, and give young people a platform to shine.
