1. Do no harm by Henry Marsh. 2.This is going to hurt by Adam Kay. 3.The man who mistook his wife for a hat by Oliver Sacks. 4.Fragile lives by Stefen Westaby. 5.Your Life in my hands by Rachel Clarke.
I am an incoming 1st year med student and I've read Do No Harm around 3 years ago. I have recommended this book to a lot of my pre-med peers and they also loved it. I've also watched the BBC documentary "The English Surgeon" also featuring Dr. Henry Marsh (where the story is in a chapter of his book). I highly recommend this book for those interested on becoming a doctor; most especially a surgeon. It will make you think of the extent and limits of our abilities to save lives. And even ask "What's the point of it all?" I like this existentialist reflective nature of being a doctor. But we know the answer ;) On another YT video I saw Dr. Marsh cite Psychologist Daniel Kahneman often. Seeing that they quite think alike, I suggest reading Dr. Kahneman's book Thinking: Fast and Slow. I read this book prior to Do No Harm and I can say that I better understood Dr. Marsh's thought processes. Thanks for the video and suggestions, pal. I reckon Fragile Lives is great and I'll read it before school starts. Cheers. :)
For students like me whose parents aren't in the medical field, I suggest "Treatment Kind and Fair" by Dr. Perri Klass. This book shows Dr. Klass speaking with her son, who's about to enter med school, in a letter format. It would be like having a doctor-mother guide you into the medical field. Truly helpful.
Love your blog. Do No Harm was my first and most favourite, but ‘Adventures in Human Being’ is utterly incredible. Gavin Francis uses his understanding of many disciplines to draw the reader in in a much more philosophical way, using examples from Da Vinci or Plato to expedition explorers like Shackleton. I’d also recommend ‘When Breath Becomes Air’ I read that in two days I was so hooked!
Do No Harm was the first medical genre book that I happened to read and it’s what drove me to decide to do medicine after my pharmacy degree! Absolutely loved it, I then went on to read Fragile lives and Admissions and I think you give a very accurate description of both authors and their temperament, as it definitely shows through as your reading, all fantastic books!
Zed No I’m not in med school yet, just that it made me decide for definite that medicine is what I want to do, I’m only just starting my second year of pharmacy so a while to go yet 😊
Still Alice is a great book detailing one's experience of Alzheimer's disease from the point of diagnosis and throughout disease progression, with great emphasis drawn to the impact of the disease on almost every facet of this individuals life.A must read for any healthcare professional.
Hello Ollie 😃😃 Very interesting video indeed and I like the book mark with British Heart Foundation ❤. Keep the good work that you are doing 😃👍 All best wishes, Roman
Do no harm is great and so is admissions. I would recommend the emperor of all maladies and the gene by siddhartha mukherjee as well as when breath becomes air and complications by Atul Gawande
I suggest you to read My own country by Dr. Abraham Verghese. It's autobiographical: Dr. Verghese was one of the first doctors to have to deal with HIV patients in Tennesse.
Fab list, it’s hard to argue with any of them being on there. Do No Harm is my personal favourite. Also Human gives a really up-front account of the personal and emotional toll being a doctor can have, it’s definitely a book I’d recommend anyone going into medicine to read. I really enjoyed The Human Kind: quite a witty take on being a GP in Edinburgh. Being Mortal should be essential reading for everyone going anywhere near a hospital.
What doctors feel by danielle ofri its a really good insight into some of the emotional challenges doctors face, and can you die of a broken heart nicki stamp a book about a female heart surgeon and her career but also learning about and discovering the heart!
That's really hard, so I'll give a few :p. Fiction-wise I love The Lord of the Rings (standard nerd fare) and 1984. Fahrenheit 451, Ordinary Men, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, recently finished The Gulag Archipelago which was a very hard read but well worth it!
i'm a high school student and i want to be a doctor do i have to study these books and the other books that i have or should i just read them?? please answer
You absolutely don't have to study these books, these are just about learning more about what it means to be a doctor or surgeon! When you get to medical school you will have to study books like Grey's Anatomy and other textbooks :)
@@OllieBurtonMed oh okay thank you sm and can you do a video about best med school i searched a lot i couldn't find the best med school yet sorry 4 my English and thanks again 💕
@@velumot121 Don't apologise, your english is great! It's probably something I don't want to make a video about soon, only because getting into med school is so competitive that my take is you should be willing to go wherever offers you a place :) - all med schools are pretty good!
“When Breath Becomes Air” its a really good, heartbreaking book.
Yes😭❤️

"Trust me, I'm a junior doctor" and "when breath becomes air"
Hello Ollie 😃😃 Very interesting video indeed and I like the book mark with British Heart Foundation ❤. Keep the good work that you are doing 😃👍 All best wishes, Roman
I was surprised that when breath becomes air was not mentioned
I've read Your Life In My Hands, This Is Going To Hurt, When Breath Becomes Air, Admissions, and The Value Of Life: An Introduction To Medical Ethics.
Please read Why We Get Sick by Randolph Nesse...
It will completely change your perspective on disease...
Do no harm is great and so is admissions. I would recommend the emperor of all maladies and the gene by siddhartha mukherjee as well as when breath becomes air and complications by Atul Gawande
good recommendations!

i'm reading what's wrong with me it's about the human body it's so amazing i'm learning a lot from it/i'm studying it

Complications by atul gawande is amazing book.
It's fantastic, agreed.
One of my favorite medical books is "Better" by Atul Gawande
Can you give me some names of Autobiography books about surgeons
Thanks mate
Thank you!
Out of interest, what’s your favourite non-medical book?
That's really hard, so I'll give a few :p. Fiction-wise I love The Lord of the Rings (standard nerd fare) and 1984. Fahrenheit 451, Ordinary Men, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, recently finished The Gulag Archipelago which was a very hard read but well worth it!
"When death becomes life" is my favorite.
Great suggestions. I'd add BEING MORTAL by Dr. Atul Gawande.
I want to give my brother gift for medical clearance. which one should I give ?
