  • India has launched a major push to sell Africa weapons as part of its ambitions to boost its defense sector. On Wednesday, the Indian military invited army chiefs from over 30 African nations to inspect domestically made helicopters, drones and artillery. As well as boosting EXPORTS, India also wants to become less reliant on imports, including from Russia - as it faces off against China on their disputed border.

India defense: buy weapons. IT: outsourced project from us. Pharma: copy medicine. Space: base on Russian tech. Food prod: export when the per capital yield. The Indian yield is only half of that of china, how come it exports while china imports? It’s exports 25% of the rice market!

I find it surprising that your New Delhi correspondent could not answer your questions correctly. To the Q about why India wants to hike exports and why choose defense as an industry over other sectors - the American, European, Russian and Chinese pathway should be able to provide you an answer.
India sees this as a viable sector is the simple answer. As it tries to bring down its own imports and design and manufacture more defense items for its own forces, it also looking to export the same in order to amortize development cost and learn from different use cases. Also, India brings in a lot of core strengths in defense.
Due to its inherent advanced capabilities in Software development, Rocketry (Space Program), Chip design and AI algorithms, this translates into cutting edge defence products in the field of Radars, Missiles and Aviation. Significant investments into the field of Missiles, Aviation, Radars and Artillery have resulted in world class products at fairly down to earth prices.
And like every sector, earning forex is now a key mandate, just like it is for Germany, France, Italy and Spain. India is not choosing Defence over any other sector, but like every big country with a lot of capacity and sectoral strength and variety, India is also focusing on the defence export sector. Its called adding value to the export list and shows how far India has come over the last 77 years.
    Hope this explains your Q.

Anyone else trying to do is being presumptious or trying hard to crash the Big Boys' Club of Arms Manufacturing. Why DW should have a news item on India trying to sell weapons to African nations is beyond comprehension. @@sterlinggrey1899 yaa, that's why i told to rethink. Because you told about manufacturing oxygen cylinders and ventilators, but why?
And cleaning rivers, do you know that why whole west visit sabarmati river front and why west sends it's deligation to study it? And of hospitals, i think you have to know that how much medical tourist comes every year to india.
And as of girls, i think it's better to lacture West who have high rate of cases of sexual abuse and it's when only 16% cases are reported according to their governments. And as of india, rate is too low from others including whole west. Maybe in no, you'll find it a little large but still less then many western counterparts when we have more than 100 times more population then theirs.
We admire that a single case is not acceptable at all, and I'm not trying to defend and we are working on it, but before telling us, you have to first see your own. And we are humans, respect life of all living beings, either it's cow or anything else.
And yaa, if you are from Pakistan, then please think of your minorities, thousands of Hindus womans forcefully getting converted after kidnapping. Maybe for now that's your part but lastly it's ours.

Weapons market is a combination of low tech, middle tech, and high-tech products. We are dependent on others for high-tech equipments and that is what we import, like fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, and advanced long-range missile systems. But the low tech and middle tech segment is where we can capture some of the market, and that is what is being done.
