"In the gallows I balance on my toes so I can breathe" hits so hard. It's that all consuming feeling of depression being the noose around my neck.
This is one of my favorite Ren songs too. I think your analysis was spot on. Chinchilla is a powerhouse in her own right. She duets with Ren on How to be Me (live) and once again, they sing beautifully together. She's also independent so please consider checking out some of her solo work.

This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone.
Anyway I think most people usually recommend checking out the other collaboration with Chinchilla next, but I suggest going for Crutch feat. Bibi. It is an older song from before he finally got diagnosed correctly and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching but so so beautiful. One of my absolute favourite Ren songs.
BTW don’t worry, you will become a fan fan too if you continue down the Ren rabbit hole cause the man never disappoints 😅 Come join us 🐰🕳️ #NotACult 😂
"How to be me" is great also by the two of them! Hope you have that on your list! Volume is perfect!
Chinchilla is also independent and produces her own music. She's definitely worth checking out. Here are a few suggestions: Little Girl Gone (both produced and live versions are great), Fingers (live version), and Elements. She's also got a new one coming soon, so everyone should subscribe to her channel. She deserves a larger following.
For me the Chalk Outline is the “bubble” you’re in, the cottonwool cloud you’re in (& that your brain is wrapped in) when you’re on antidepressants. Everything is distant, you’re sort of protected from the pain...except you’re not. But the fear of the pain rushing back keeps you taking it, “just in case”. It’s a potentially eternal vicious circle. I was on Prozac for 13 years, until one day I wonder who the f*ck I was? And what did I really think, or feel, about anything? I didn’t know. So I weaned myself off them, took a month or three, and it was scary, but that was 20 years ago, a couple of minor brushes with depression since, but no black, black tunnels, and no cloudy, cottonwool filled chalk outlines, and for that I’m grateful. I f*cking love this song, and REN & Chinchilla are outstanding musicians! Thank you again, love from Annie, in Cornwall, UK🙂🌸
Gotta check out The Big Push too, they do a great cover of some Marley with Ren as lead singer, his vocal style changes at the drop of a hat.

You'll find all the Ren friends he collaborates with are super talented - I'd definitely urge you to go down the Chinchilla branch of the rabbit hole as she has some brilliant solo stuff. She has also done a couple of busking duets with Ren which I'd highly recommend you looking at.
They call each other musical siblings and for good reason - the chemistry between them is ridiculous and it feels like they know hat each other is thinking.

One of my all time favourite performances. If you want a calmer track the band Ren was in doing " Bongo Bong " is truly a must. Great reaction to this one.

Chinchilla is an incredible talent in her own right. She is another unique unsigned British artist who is building a huge following. A great place to start is the Live version of 'Fingers'. It has to be the live version! I promise you won't be disappointed.

Yes, and since it's so much more than a song/music video (I'm just... NOT gonna listen to a song where someone does a few seconds of inhaled-breath/sucking sound even though 100% it's a brilliant device to depict what happened/what he was going through when he was fighting the dark within to defeat it)...
... anyway, sure, it's a *song* but more than that, it's a performance piece/performance art that *employs* music.
I 100% put Hi Ren to the side as an absolute masterpiece of performance of the human experience, worth *re-watching* over & over & over, but I don't ever count it against full-on *music* masterpieces like Chalk Outlines that I'm gonna *listen* to even without a video (maybe even on a playlist that isn't all Ren), over & over & over.

Btw, Ren's 'best song' tends to be the one you listened to last. :) All his tracks are good. Most of them are great and a couple of dozen are bona fide masterpieces! There's so much goodness, that it's really impossible to say which is his best. Most people's idea, of what his best song is, will change from day to day, week to week and with changes in mood. :)

The volume was perfect! Ren and Chinchilla are amazing in everything they've done together - How to Be Me is one of my favorites. I also love Chinchilla's solo stuff. If you want to hear some of that, I would recommend Fingers live. For a change of pace, you might want to watch Ren and Sam Thompkins do Blind Eyed. There are multiple versions, but I would personally recommend starting with the MC Sessions version, and then be sure to watch the version featuring the Angry Car Park Attendant!

I’ve become obsessed with this guys music. He’s in his own lane. He has so much momentum now that I don’t see anything stopping him.
How to be me live with Chinchilla is heartbreakingly beautiful.
I'm on sertraline (zoloft) for the second time. I've been on almost every antidepressant, ssri,snri, even old school tricyclic antidepressants. The ones that work properly (and it's a freaking kaleidoscope Rollercoaster to fund the right med and dose and/or combo) it's only good for a time before your brain adjusts for it and you start to build that wall. You don't even notice until, one day something happens that you KNOW should have elicited a certain reaction... but you can't feel the connection to your own emotions anymore.
I had already seen some of the antidepressant roulette and i wasn't eager to play again, so i tried to hide it. Till i realized that my son (who was around 4 at the time) was more important than my obstinate pride.
But that "chalk outline" is awful. You don't feel human, but you keep taking the meds because you know that if you stop... everything gets harder and hurts more and your brain overloads.
Plus... this is the devil you know. Being "ok" is a scary, terrifying unknown. And what if you do climb up to the top of that hole and you can look out at ok and you start to feel it... then you slip. The higher or more ok you get, the more it hurts when you fuck it all up again.
That's the mindset i feel when i hear that line. It's a punch in the gut because it's an avoidance tactic that i battle with everyday. Not the meds, i really do need them, but doing everything exactly as i always do even when it's unhealthy. Because I'm scared to be ok. Like Ren said, all things change. Except maybe me lol.
But even I'm getting a bit higher up that hole. It's absolutely terrifying. 💜

Ren and Chinchilla give me "Modern Day Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers" kinda vibes. If you're old enough to remember that "Islands in the Stream" era when Kenny and Dolly did that TV special, you know what I am talking about. Good friends who had great chemistry and were so magical performing together that everyone "shipped them", as the kids say, even though they were never in a romantic relationship. ❤

Had to smile when I watched you react to Chalk Outlines and how you say that it has become your new favourite. (favourite) see what I did there!?, British spelling😂. Anyways, it reminded me of when I started on my own Ren journey and when I first listened to the song and I remember thinking, man, this is fantastic, I love this. This has got to be the best song he's written. Then my journey continued and I heard, 'How To Be Me' and that one put Chalk in the shade. So man, ima go sit here and watch you make take the same journey and when you finally get to the aforementioned song, I will smile again as your jaw drops and you replace favorite after favourite. That my friend, is what's called, "The Ren effect ". Keep creating, keep positive but most of all, keep smiling 😊

Though I know everyone will suggest "How To Be Me" as the best of their collabs, I'll always adore their mixup of One Dance/Drunk in Love (performed on the streets of Brighton. Much like you, this is my favorite musically. It's the only one I've managed to learn how to play properly. Looking forward to joining you in your trip further down the rabbithole.
